Claude Monet was a key figure in the Impressionist movement that transformed French painting in the second half of the nineteenth century.

Who was Claude Monet ?

• Claude Monet also known as Oscar-Claude Monet or Claude Oscar Monet was a founder of French impressionist painting, and the most consistent and prolific practitioner of the movement's philosophy of expressing one's perceptions before nature, especially as applied to plain-air landscape painting. The term Impressionism is derived from the title of his painting Impression, Sunrise.

3)Where did Claude Monet go to School and study art?

• He entered the Le Havre school of arts when he was eleven years old, but had apparently been painting since he was at least 5. 

• Claude Monet studied at Académie Suisse in 1859 and at a a Parisian studio run by Charles Gabriel Gleyre in 1862

• Monet opted instead to study at Gleyre's avant-garde salon and studio, where he established lifelong friendships with Frederic Bazille, Auguste Renoir, and Alfred Sisley. The three began painting together en plein aire (in the outdoors) in the forest of

• Impressionist style 

• Monet's fascination with light led him to paint several series of pictures showing the effect of sunlight on a subject. In these pictures, he painted the same subject at different times of the day in different light. One such study is found in the very popular Haystacks series.

• Impressionism -The name comes from Claude Monet's painting Impression: Sunrise -Tried to capture an immediate impression of what the eye sees at a single glance -Artists preferred to work outdoors in natural light, rather than in their studio with sketches -Tends to have brilliant colors that shimmer -Artists favored subjects that appeared informal and spontaneous -Claude Monet, Mary Cassatt, Pierre Auguste Renoir, Camille Pissarro, Edgar Degas, Edouard Manet and Berthe Morisot are some popular artists of this time period
