Safety First
• Science is a hands-on laboratory class. • You will be doing many laboratory activities, which
require the use of hazardous chemicals and expensive lab equipment.
• Safety in the science classroom is the #1 priority.• To ensure a safe science classroom, a list of rules has
been developed and provided to you in your student safety contract.
• These rules must be followed at all times. • A signed lab safety contract is required to participate in
labs.

General Safety Guidelines
• Be Responsible at All Times. No horseplay, practical jokes, pranks, etc.
• Follow all instructions carefully.
• Do not play with lab equipment until instructed to do so.
• Food, drink, and gum are not allowed in the science classroom.

Safety Equipment #2: Fire Blanket
How to use: If someone's clothes catch on fire, wrap them in the blanket quickly to smother the flames

use the blanket on a liquid fire, lab equipment, or objects in the room - this could make the fire spread

• This piece of equipment is ONLY used if a person spills a dangerous chemical on themselves
• How to use: Stand under the shower and pull the triangle down

Safety Equipment #4: Eyewash station
• This piece of equipment is used when your eyes are exposed to a hazardous chemical.
• How to use: – Step 1: Flip over the caps, press
down on the button, and water will spout up
– Step 2: Immediately flush eyes for at least 15 minutes.
Things to remember: Keep the eyes open and rotate the eyeballs in all directions to remove contamination from around the eyes. An injured person may need help holding the eyelids open.
