I. Welcome & Introductions!

The LCNV MissionThe Literacy Council of Northern Virginia is a non-profit educational organization that recruits and trains volunteers to teach adults who need help reading, writing, speaking, and understanding English. Since 1962, the Literacy Council has trained thousands of volunteers to provide one-to-one tutoring to adults throughout Northern Virginia. – Website: www.lcnv.org – We are also on Facebook! Classroom Structure

• Lead Teachers and AmeriCorps are the paid staff at each classroom site.

• They act as a “principal” of a small school.

• They are your point person.

III. Administration

Positions and Responsibilities:

• Lead Teacher- The “principal” of the site

• Volunteer Teacher- Prepares lessons, instructs

students, submits paperwork

• Class Aide- Assists teacher, subs

• Lab Aide- Assists students in the computer lab

Admin: Classes & Levels

ESOL Learning Centers– Each class is broken into two or

more levels with different teachers

– Levels are determined using a students score on the BEST Plus Oral Proficiency Test

– There is no childcare and the class is open to adults 18+

Entrance into both Classroom Programs and progress towards graduation is assessed using Best Plus Oral Proficiency Test

Family Learning Program:– Family Learning classes are

multilevel classes designed for parent’s and their children

– They typically have 15-28 adult students with instruction supplemented by Parent And Child Time activities once a month.

– Outside of PACT time, children are in a separate room monitored by a Children’s Teacher

Admin: Subbing

• A sub list will be given to leads shortly after class begins.

• Subs are volunteers and often have limited availability

• Lead teachers are responsible for finding subs at the site.

• Give your lead teacher advanced notice of absences.

• If a sub cannot be found, classes may be combined.• Keep “emergency” lesson plans at hand.• Please let us know if you’d like to be on the sub list

Admin: Registration• All new and returning students should attend registration in order to be

in the class.

• Teachers are strongly encouraged to attend registration for their site to meet new students, answer questions, and provide general support.

• Registration Process:

– Literacy test

– Profile forms

– Student Learning Plan

– BEST Plus assessment

– Processing and payment

– Referrals as necessary

For students who miss registration:• Returning students may join the class

after registration only if they were enrolled during the previous session and the class still has openings.

• All other students may attend the first week of class, but must go to a late (regional) registration on Saturday, May 9th to remain in the class.

Admin: Beginning of Class

• Before class begins- lead teachers will be given binders with all necessary class information: Class Lists, Attendance, Curricula, Assessments, Homework Logs, Volunteer Hours form, etc.

• First class and second class- Divide into levels where applicable, teach intro activities, get to know your students, make sure student profiles are complete

• Third class- last day for late payments and books will be distributed with Student IDs

Admin: During the Session

• Return attendance forms to the Lead Teacher binder after every class. Lead Teachers turn in hours and attendance monthly for reporting.

• Teach English reading, writing, speaking, and listening using the life-skills covered in the textbooks and curricula objectives. Distribute Homework Assignments to reinforce instruction. Track assignments on the Homework Log.

• Consult your Lead Teacher for teaching resources or visit the LCNV Library.

• Keep your student assessments up to date.• Teach, learn, and have fun!

Admin: End of Session

• Post testing- 1 – 3 weeks before graduation

(schedule will vary)

• Paperwork due (second to last class)- final

attendance, student surveys, student assessments,

homework logs

• Graduation (last class)- Distribute certificates,

incentive awards, report cards and food!

• Forms are due to the lead teacher after every class.• Volunteer activities can be teaching, subbing, or testing.

Be sure to include travel and prep time.• Final versions of hours for homework and attendance must

be recorded in LCNV database before graduation to generate certificates and determine eligibility for incentive awards. See packet for procedures on homework.

• Please don’t include cancelled classes!
