Welcome! Contact Info: Classroom Phone Number: 354-2733 Email: [email protected] Bloomz App.: Contact me through the BLOOMZ APP. This can be done by downloading the app. or signing up through the website (I will be sending instructions home soon). Classroom Philosophy: I believe that the way children feel about themselves directly affects the way they learn, relate to others, and function in life. When children feel good about themselves, they produce good results; their minds can be challenged, they have a greater sense of responsibility, and their uniqueness is appreciated. I feel it’s important that every individual feels accepted. Children have the right to enjoy respect from their peers and learn in a safe, comfortable environment. I have high expectations for my students and work to challenge them at appropriate levels. I will be working to encourage acceptable behavior and create a positive atmosphere where the long-range effects are mutual respect, responsibility, self- discipline, and cooperation in solving problems. Curriculum Overview: Reading: Students will participate in whole-class read alouds (read by me, with discussion), small guided reading groups (Book Club) at their levels (both fiction and nonfiction), individualized reading conferences with me, and will have SSR (Super Silent Reading) time daily. On a daily basis, students will work independently at Literacy Work Places where each activity is designed to meet the individual needs of all students. They will also have poetry folders (focusing on rhymes and phonics). We will be using the newly adopted English Language Arts program, Journeys.

• Writing: Students will participate in the “Writing Workshop” approach (District adopted material by Journeys & Lucy Calkins). Students will become familiar with the importance of Traits of Quality Writing (what makes writing good) through various forms of writing and daily Grammar study. Students will self-select and publish writing. This will demonstrate their growth as a writer. They will self-reflect as they consider their strengths as a writer and will goal-set accordingly. Second grade focuses on Narrative, Opinion, & Informational writing.

• Math: Students will learn the following key concepts this year: graphing,

place value, addition, subtraction, fractions, money, time, geometry, estimation, and measurement. I will be using a variety of resources to teach the same mathematical concept in multiple ways, which helps further reinforce these key concepts. I will utilize the district adopted “Bridges” & “Fosnet” Mathematical Curriculum, which are aligned with the Common Core State Standards. Three to four times per week, students will work in small groups at Math Work Places where each activity is designed to meet the grade level expectations. While the students are at work places, I meet with small groups (Math Club) to work on specific math concepts. Students will also have their own Math Folders in which they will record their mathematical learning and complete mathematical problem solving. They will learn to use a variety of strategies and will share their mathematical thinking with their classmates.

• Handwriting: We will be using Handwriting Without Tears (District approved

materials). This method teaches in a developmental progression so children will develop good consistent habits for size, letter formation and letter placement. Children will master handwriting more quickly and easily because developmental principles are utilized and easy things are placed before difficult things. Handwriting Without Tears essentially breaks the task of handwriting down into specific development units.

• Spelling: The 2nd grade spelling program uses the Journeys curriculum. Students learn and practice the spelling strategies with the weekly words. The children practice all the words in a variety of ways (Interactive sentences, Smartboard games, etc.). On Friday, I will lead a quick spelling check and evaluate how the children are doing with understanding the spelling strategies and principles. There will be 12 weekly words, 2 second grade core words, & 2 optional challenge words. Research demonstrates that most students can memorize words for the test and then forget them the next day. They usually don’t remember the correct spelling when they really need to write the word. Instead of memorizing, we focus on learning the principles about how words work.

• Science: Students are going to a science classroom 1 hour per week where

they work through the scientific process. Students will participate in the following “units”… Earth Science/Work of Water & Physical Science/Material Magic, Life Science/Animal Adventures, & Life Science/Plant Adventures.

• Social Studies: The focus will be on Communities. We will be using “My World

Social Studies” curriculum.

Assessments: Children’s reading will formally be assessed in September, November, February, and May; I will be utilizing Literably & the Developmental Reading Assessment (DRA). Students will publish pieces of writing that will be assessed throughout the year. In Math, students will complete an assessment at the end of each unit. Students will complete an assessment in Science and Social Studies at the end of each unit of study. Ongoing formative and summative assessments will be conducted throughout the school year, which will guide my instruction in order to best meet the needs of my students. School Day Hours/Info: Our school day is from 8:30 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. Monday – Thursday & 8:30 a.m. – 1:45 p.m. on Friday. If your child participates in the breakfast program, that begins at 8:00 a.m. Students are required to line up with their class on the playground blacktop before school starts. Students go out to lunch recess at 11:20 before eating. Lunch is from 11:48-12:00. Students will be dismissed after school through the west doors located on Calispel St.

Birthdays:

If you’re interested in sending birthday treats for your child’s birthday, treats that are able to be served individually like cupcakes, cookies, popsicles etc. work best in the classroom. Birthday treats are served toward the end of the school day. Mondays & Wednesdays at 2:45 p.m., Tuesdays & Thursdays at 2:00 p.m. & Fridays at 1:30 p.m. You can send them with your child

to school or drop them off at the office. Please let me know in advance, so I can plan accordingly! Thanks for understanding!

Snacks: Your child will receive a snack every morning. Thank you to everyone who has already contributed snacks for our class! Throughout the course of the year, please feel free to send snacks. Some examples are Goldfish, pretzels, Graham Crackers, Cheese-Its, etc. Any type of crackers are great! Please avoid cookies and chips. Thanks! Newsletters/Information: Please expect a monthly newsletter that will outline the upcoming learning activities, classroom announcements, and school events for the month. These will be sent home during the first week of each month. I will also post newsletters in the Bloomz. App. Also, on Mondays, I will be sending home various flyers and information that might interest you and your family. I find that sending these home once a week helps you to know when to expect seeing these papers and assists in developing your child’s organizational skills (there are exceptions when I receive something from the office mid-week that must be sent home immediately). Most district flyers will now be found on the district website & SPS App. in Peachjar. Homework:

Students have homework on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. On Mondays, students will bring home their homework sheet. It will give an outline of the weekly homework assignments. All activities will be included on the sheet. Homework sheets are due back on Fridays. There is also a section at the bottom of the Homework sheet for any questions or comments you may have, please feel free to write me a note in there.

Thank you for your help and support! “Take Home Book” Reading Program: Students will be checking out a “Just Right” book on Monday & returning it on Friday. This book is meant for your child to read to themselves, to a sibling, a parent/guardian each night. Depending on your child’s current reading level, they may have the same book all week to practice their reading strategies or they may be bringing home a new book Monday – Thursday to read & work on their reading comprehension skills.

Red Garfield Grizzly Folders: It is crucial that your child brings his/her Grizzly Folder to school every day!!! Inside the folder you will find two sides. One side is for papers and information to be brought home and stay at home (activities completed in class, information from the office, etc.) and the other side is for papers and information to be read and returned to school (permission slips, information from the office, homework, etc.). There is also a “Homework Resource Booklet” in the back pouch of the red folder to help you & your child with homework. I find that these folders are a great (and easy) way for us to communicate, so please feel free to write me a note in there if you have any questions or concerns. Thanks for your support with this! Volunteer Opportunities: There are many ways you can help out in your child's classroom. I welcome volunteers to help out in the classroom, on field trips, or for class parties. You will need to make other arrangements for younger siblings. Please contact me prior to field trips due to limited space on the bus. For those of you wanting to help out, but are unable to volunteer time, there are many opportunities throughout the year when small items or supplies are needed for various learning activities. This is a GREAT opportunity for parents/guardians that are unable to provide time in the classroom, but want to provide classroom support. If you’re interested, please let me know so I can send home the District Volunteer Application. I will post the available days/times for volunteer opportunities in the October newsletter. School-Wide & Classroom Incentives: There are many ways that students can be recognized for being RESPECTFUL, RESPONSIBLE, & SAFE. Paw Prides can be earned throughout the building (classroom, hallway, playground, lunchroom, etc.). There are weekly & monthly drawings. Garfield Class Awards are earned when the whole class is recognized for following classroom or school rules. Every time our class earns 10 class awards, we have a mini celebration with a treat & activity. There are also weekly team points. Points are earned when a table team works together, follows the classroom promise, & shows that they are RESPECTFUL, RESPONSIBLE, & SAFE. The team with the most points at the end of the week earns a selection out of the Treasure Box or a Reward Card. Students are moved to different tables & sit with new people every month. This is a great opportunity for them to learn to work hard together and encourage each other to work hard & do their best!

Class Management Plan Mrs. Sutherland – Room 119

I firmly believe that life-long success depends on self-discipline. Therefore, I use a management policy within the classroom that allows every student the opportunity to manage his or her own behavior. Students learn to accept responsibility for their own behavior, thus learning self-discipline. Your child deserves the most positive educational climate possible for academic growth. Therefore, this plan will be in effect at all times. The management plan utilizes a level system. In order to have a consistent system, the students helped develop a classroom promise… Our Promise to Each Other I promise today to do my best, in reading, math, and all the rest. I promise to follow the rules, in my class and in my school. I’ll respect myself and others too, I’ll expect the best in all I do. I am here to learn all I can, to try my best and be all I am! If a student chooses to ignore the class developed “Promise to Each Other,” the following occurs: 1st time: verbal reminder (no big deal) 2nd time: move down a level 3rd time plus: A note or call home to their parent/guardian. If the negative behavior continues for a period of time a conference will be set up with the classroom teacher, parent/guardian, & possibly the school counselor.

Upward Movement Between Levels

1. Following the classroom promise 2. Random act of kindness shown to another witnessed by the teacher.

*Upward and downward movement may occur at any time during the day. *All students at Level 1 with be returned to Level 2 at the end of each day (a fresh start for the next day). *Students at Level 3 may stay there throughout the week, if they maintain excellent behavior and follow the promise. *All students return to Level 2 at the end of the week (a fresh start for the next week). A Reset Room is also used school-wide to help students get back on track with their learning in the classroom. The “Reset Strategy” is designed to enable the teacher and student to cut off a negative social exchange or power struggle over disruptive behavior and to initiate a positive social exchange. The student goes to a partner classroom to reset. The student uses a sand timer, gives herself/himself enough time to reset and returns to the class ready to get back on track. I also use a Break Space within the classroom for students who would benefit from a brief time to utilize their calm down strategies. ***Please remember that our school-wide discipline plan states that: The teacher follows the classroom behavior plan & uses in-class & out-of-class interventions as an opportunity for students to reset, self-regulate, & ultimately change classroom behavior. For issues that are ongoing & persistent, or for issues that are a major behavior concern, the teacher will submit a discipline referral form to the office. The discipline referral form will result in administration working with both the student & family. Administration will determine the consequences, behavior plan if needed, & work with the family to determine steps for restoring the student back into the classroom. In the case of out of school suspensions, a reentry conference will be required before the student returns to school. Your child has been informed about the Classroom Management Plan, but I would appreciate it if you would review the plan with your child. If you have any questions, please feel free to call or email me.

Level Privilege Examples: Level 3 *All level 2 privileges *Read anywhere in the room during Super Silent Reading (SSR) *1st to line up for afternoon recess *And more… Level 2 *On time to recess Level 1 *No privileges *No afternoon recess

Most Importantly… I look forward to working with your child this year! I check my email frequently, so that’s an easy way that we can communicate if questions ever arise. My classroom phone also has voicemail, so please feel free to leave a message anytime…I check my messages first thing every morning. I will also be sending home information on how to get connected with the Bloomz App. This is a fantastic way to see what’s happening in the classroom & great for communication. I’m looking forward to an exciting year of teaching and learning! Thank you for sharing your child with me this year!
