Editorial02SATURDAY, MARCH 01, 2014

Dear Editor,I refer to the above

mentioned articles written in your esteemed paper dated February 15, 2014, written by eminent writers Piroja Jokhi and Dr. Homi Dhalla’s thoughts following the letter written to BPP by 19 eminent Parsi Doctors of our Community, showing their inability to participate in the implementation of the Aviary project at Doongerwadi.

Ms. Piroja Jokhi is very right when she says that the time will come when almost all of us will opt for cremation in order to dispose off the bodies of the dead with dignity.

The beautiful verdant spacious Doongerwadi will become defunct and usurped by the Government for non or sparsely use of the place, if another prayer hall for the same reason is built. therefore all the so called Akabars of our Community must sit together forgetting whatever the differences they may have

and save the situation before

it goes out of hand. Important obsequies/last rite prayers of 4 days after death must be allowed at the Doongerwadi premises by any Mobeds who are there and not to renegade them for performing their duty.

As the eminent Surgeons and Consultant Physicians of our Community have categorically informed BPP that they will not be able to participate in the Aviary Project as non use of 1051 combinations of diclofenac

would be wise to allow prayers at the banglis of Doongerwadi, before & after the bodies are taken to electric crematoria.Hope wise counsel prevails. Aban P. Patel.

Dear Editor, As a Community the Parsis

have a lot to feel blessed for. But, one thing, I can say with certainty – we are a Community

problems and third class leadership. Ever since I was in

school I have been observing in-

the corridors of Parsi Power - the Bombay Parsi Punchayet (BPP).

In those days men and women of distinction would take on the mantle of leadership – but despite their individual excellence they generally ended their terms in collective mediocrity, if not total disaster I used to read with a degree of amusement nasty correspondence between B. K. BomanBehram and Dr. Nellie Noble (both now deceased) … the Trustees accepting ‘Pagdi’ in various forms when it was illegal to do so under the Rent Act and Late Advocate Ardishir Katrak send shivers down many a Trustee’s non-existent spine.

I have heard past Trustees confess in private that they do take cash from prospective tenants or licensees – but not to line their own pockets but use it at the appropriate time to “manage” corrupt Government

non-Parsi encroachers.

mistakes we all make along our way. Learning to learn from our mistakes is a great step in the direction of knowledge.

Knowledge is current and can only be found by those willing to keep their eyes and ears open to the world around us today. Unlike its friend wisdom, knowledge is not something that comes with age. Knowledge is new information and wisdom is old, born out of experience and maturity.

We must all embrace knowledge with excitement and without prejudice and look forward to the day when, if we have used our knowledge well, wisdom will walk into our minds.

The 1st of March is such a lovely day for me. A day when my dearest Mamaiji was born, all those many many years and innovations ago. Today she shines as always, full of wisdom.

The ZYAT promotes various youth activities amongst Parsis in Thane. Mr. Patva later became an active member of TPZA from 1995. He involved himself in all the activities and attended all the meetings of the TPZA. During the previous TPZA elections in 2010, Mr. Patva had contested for the Vice- President’s post of the TPZA, but lost the elections. Finally 2013 was a good year for Mr. Patva when he contested for the member of the Managing Committee and won the elections. Zarthostis of Thane shine at the Upvan Art Festival

The Zarthostis of Thane are a very enterprising and fun loving lot and

are eager participants in all cultural and art activities in and around Thane. Age or sex does not hinder them from giving and showing their best performances on every stage, winning all round applause from Parsis and Non-Parsis alike. Their recent participation in the Upvan Art Festival proves the point once again.

he Upvan Art Festival conducted at the sprawling Upvan Lake in Thane on the 10th, 11th and 12th of January 2014 was a wonderful opportunity for the Parsi Zoroastrian Community of Thane to highlight our Traditions and Culture. They

were invited by the organizers to put up a program on the Community Carnival Stage. In spite of the late invite, within 2 weeks, a band of dedicated organizers with an eager group of participants started their practice in earnest every evening after school hours.

The cold beautiful Sunday evening, 12th of January saw a myriad group of performers from different Communities performing on the Community Carnival Stage. The entire Upvan Lake decorated with coloured lights and lazer shows, it seemed the whole of Thane had converged here. A record of over 1 lakh footfalls were recorded on that day.

The Thane Parsi group

Program started at 5.15 pm with the Boat scene depicting

The scene in which a request for refuge in the Court of King Jadi Rana followed by the famous,”Adding sugar and sweetness to the bowl of milk” had the audience rapt in attention.

A placard display of the prominent Parsi Structures in Thane and eminent Parsi personalities had the crowd clapping and applauding. A mock Navjote and wedding scene was enacted to create awareness among the crowd who were all eager to know more about our Zarthosti culture. The birdie dance by our enthusiastic kids trained by

choreographer Aroza Vachha had the crowd tapping their feet and swaying to the music.

This was followed by Chhaiyye Hame Zarthosthi song wherein all

the Parsis in the crowd joined in and the festive a t m o s p h e r e seemed all the livelier.

T h e program ended 45 minutes later with the o r g a n i z e r s all praise for

the effort and wonderful performance by the group.

The participants in the program were: Master Jeh M. Dadina, Master Varshin B. Gilder, Miss Sanaya Tewari

Master Kayaan K. Billimoria, Master Farzan M. Kalwachwala, Miss Azeeta Z. Gandhi, Miss Sanaya S. Gandhi

Master Dion F. Mistry,

Miss Faye F. Mistry, Miss Natasha H. Gandevia, Miss Binaz Z. Sarbhanwala, Miss Yazishni Z. Gandhi, Miss Pia M. Gori , Mrs Jaloo P. Mistry, Mrs Parinaz Z. Gandhi, Mr. Zarir N. Gandhi, Mrs Dilshad F. Mistry

Mr. Zubin Sarbhanwala, Mrs Frenaz Z. Sarbhanwala, Mr. Berjis F. Gilder and Mr. Kaizad M. Billimoria.

The enthusiastic Parsi group specially Thanks the volunteers Miss Arnaz Z. Sarbhanwala, Mrs. Homai M. Billimoria, Mrs. Kashmira M. Kalwachwala, Mrs. Naaznin M. Dadina, Mr. Malcolm R. Dadina, Mrs Farzana Tewari without whom they would not have been able to perform this act seamlessly. The show was compered by Mrs. Havovi K. Billimoria.

One Trustee (now deceased) claimed not too long ago that the cash was safe at his house in a loft.

As far as I can remember, the Trustees of the BPP were never a harmonious lot. Why, I too had my differences while I was a Trustee, except for the fact that at that time I was the one odd-ball among six others who genuinely believed that I was the one and only ‘thorn

and harmonious six others. I had thought that my exit would lead to uncorking Champaign bottles among my six former colleagues. Little did I realize that my quiet and unceremonious exit would lead to such a disastrous divide between the once ‘harmonious

It is such a supreme irony that when I used to speak up against certain dictatorial ways of the

current chairman, Mr. Mistree would reprimand me, Mr. Desai would recommend that I should seek “the help of a psychiatrist” (yes Mr. Desai I may have forgiven you, but not forgotten), the younger Mistry would sit on the fence and in fact often urge me to cross over to the other side of the fence, which of course I never did and the two lady Trustees would twiddle their thumbs.

So, what has changed? Is there a change of heart? Why is there such a sudden wave of self-righteousness? Is all this agitation with one eye on the next elections? Or is this to avenge the humiliating defeat of the wife of one of the sitting Trustees? Perhaps, it is a combination of all these factors and more.

But, in this clash of egos, who stand the loser? The Community

… and the Community alone! In India, Parsis are held in

esteem for their high degree to integrity and today some of the Trustees have accused the chairman of the apex body of the Parsis of fraud in the national media. What could be more shameful?

I hold no brief for the chairman. For that matter I hold no brief for any of the once harmonious six. Truth be told, I hold them all in individual and collective disdain and have kept my distance from them ever since my resignation. But, this I feel compelled to say – this matter could have been handled differently in the larger interest of the Community.

Where was the need to take this matter to the EOW? Where

prevented the Trustees from requesting a retired Parsi Judge of high integrity and objectivity like Justice Sam Variava or Justice Sam Bharucha to inquire and arbitrate on this matter

Community? Where was the need to take internal issues out into the streets and into the national

are cutting for ourselves as a Community?

It would seem as a Community we have learned nothing from the lessons of history. What made it easy for Alexander to defeat the mighty Achaeminians – weak leadership, court intrigue and disunity among the people! What made it possible for the Arabs to make the sun set over the once mighty Sasanian Empire – the same reasons?

A day may not be far when the Government may put a non-Parsi Administrator in charge of our funds and properties. This has already happened once before in the case of a Parsi Trust in Hyderabad and Secunderabad, except that it was mercifully a Parsi Administrator.

It is unfortunate that today our leadership comprises cheap politicians with an eye on the next elections instead of statesmen with an eye on the next generation.

The time has come for the elders of the Community to step in and arrest this rot. There is need for mature dialogue and keeping internal issues where they belong – internal. Let not the proverbial monkeys steal what

January to March quarter is that time of the year when I see most of the working

class employees running helter-skelter for doing INCOME TAX saving investments. The very word INCOME TAX itself seems to be very intimidating for many people. I have come across lots of working employees and even self employed people who without doing any ground work or without making any Financial plan fall prey to wrong products, because of the tremendous pressure and relentless chase of the accounts department to produce tax saving investment proof. In our haste to furnish the tax saving details we often miss to evaluate each of the tax saving avenue and the objective or the rationale behind choosing it. Through this article we will try to understand how we can save money, invest

Life Insurance is most often not bought but sold, and sold for all the wrong reasons. The best reason being for tax saving. According to me, the only reason one should take a life insurance is to adequately cover the sole bread winner of the family in case of his untimely death. TERM PLANS are the best insurance policies to consider as you pay only mortality charges for the risk cover. They are the cheapest form of insurance. For e.g. A premium amount of 800 per

cover a 25 year old working employee (non-smoker) for next 30 years for an sum Assured of Rs. 1 crore.

As the name itself suggests they are Equity Linked Savings Scheme. If you are young and willing to take long term investment horizon, if you can digest short term market volatility, than ELSS are best investments to create long term wealth. The returns generated in long term are tax free and

Employees Provident Fund is a savings product. It is a good investment for salaried employees to plan their retirement. It is a mandatory retirement savings instrument for salaried individuals who have a basic salary of more than 6500 per month The interest rate is decided every year and revised by Employees Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO).

Unlike EPF, PPF i.e. Public Provident Fund is available to general public. It comes with a 15 year lock-in with the facility to withdraw certain amount after completion of sixth year. After 15 years it can be renewed for the block of 5 years each. In India this is the best debt product and I constantly encourage all the investors to avail this facility to maximum limit. Most often I encounter a query if we can open a PPF Account in name of minor? Yes it can be opened, but the total investment in parent and the minor put together cannot

This option is most suited for senior c i t i z e n s not falling in high tax brackets. As it comes with relatively less tenure than PPF or NSC and it doesn’t have any market risk. H o w e v e r , one should r e m e m b e r that interest earned on

Dear Mamaiji, You always make me read the Gujarati calendar date from the front page of Parsi Times. Today is Meher Roj what does that mean?

Dear Dikri,Today is Meher Roj. The day of Meher the Yazata. One of the most powerful Yazads...the Light of the Shining Sun, the Light of the Creator. Meher is a strong symbol of friendship and today is about friendship with the light of creator.Meher helps us to receive the wisdom that comes when light dispels dark or wisdom dispels ignorance. The wisdom that comes from within and not from others. Meher also stands for contracts and agreements. It is considered auspicious to sign any legal agreement/contracts on Meher Roj. Meher in Gujarati also means compassion, blessings, caring. Isn’t that what we receive from the light of the Sun, which provides us with warmth, heat, light and life.
