Eden House, based in Snowdon Road, Fishponds, scooped the women’s category in the Howard League for Penal Reform Community Programmes Awards. At a celebratory open day, guests included Baroness Corston, the former Bristol East MP and author of a report into vulnerable women in the criminal justice system, her suc- cessor as constituency MP Kerry Mc- Carthy, local councillors and Avon and Somerset Police and Crime Com- missioner candidates. Frances Crook, the chief executive of the Howard League, said: “At a time when the Government is trying to bring about a rehabilitation revolu- tion and get ‘more for less’ out of the criminal justice system, places like Eden House should be held up as a shining example of what can be achieved. “It’s ten times cheaper to send a woman to Eden House than it would be to send her to prison, and she’s far less likely to commit crime once she leaves. “This is because they work with each woman individually, focusing on exactly why she’s committing crime, helping her to turn over a new leaf Eden House project for female offenders and get her life back on track.” Keeping a woman in custody and taking their child into care costs about £54,400 a year. Eden House was developed as a pilot project in 2009 in response to the Corston Report, which called for a radical new way of working with female offenders. Women are re- ferred from a number of areas, in- cluding the probation service, prisons, the police, GPs and com- munity groups. It helped 60 women serving com- munity sentences in 2010-11 and has the capacity to help 90 women at any one time. One of Eden House’s clients, called Lor na, could not speak highly enough of the help she has received. The 49-year-old from Easton was serving a sentence for drug offences at Eastwood Park when she was re- ferred, and has been involved with Eden House for the past five months. Lorna is now training to be a client lead and mentor, after eight months of being in recovery from drug ad- diction. “It’s been an amazing experience,” she said. “If you’re given your self worth back and given a reason to go forward in life, and a goal, you have something positive to work towards. One of the things I love most about Eden House is it’s women-focussed.” Sarah, 37, from St George, was also at Eastwood Park, serving a three-year, four-month sentence for drug dealing when she heard about Eden House. The recovering alcoholic started getting support when she was re- leased on licence in June 2010 and is now the “client lead” in the kitchen. Having got her level two qualific- ation in food and hygiene, she hopes to work in the food industry one day. “You may feel you are alone going through something, but when you come to Eden House you find lots of people with the same or similar ex- periences to you,” she said. “Before I came to Eden House I didn’t want to live, basically. My ex- periences here and the support I’ve had, have totally changed that. I still have my good days and bad days, but I now have the skills to make something of my life.” Service manager Hannah Ma- honey said there are a number of advantages of supporting offenders in the community, instead of prison. “Understanding the impact their offending has on other people is a lot more effective than someone sitting on their own in a prison cell,” she said. And by supporting women through their problems, developing their edu- cation and skills she says they are more likely to move forward pos- itively. Of the award, Hannah said: “We’re absolutely delighted. We’ve worked so hard over the last four years and it’s fantastic to be recognised by a national organisation that advocates community sentencing and rehabil- itation.
