Objectives

are being used to classify removable partial denture

Need for classificaiton

•It permits immediate visulaization of the type of edentulous arch

•It permits immediate differentiation between tooth supported and tooth-tissue supported removable partial denture.

•It should be universally acceptable at the same time.

Types of classification

•Kennedy, Cummer and Bailyn.•Most acceptable and widely used is

Kennedy’s classification.•Dr Edward Kennedy in 1925 proposed

this classification.•Others are based on support

classification and Major Connector.

Support classification

•Tooth borne•Tooth – mucosa borne•Mucosa borne

Tooth Borne

•The type of a partial denture which isdesigned in a way so that the masticatoryloads are transmitted to the periodontiumand to the alveolar bone exclusively with

thehelp of the teeth.

Tooth – Tissue borne

•The type of a partial denture which isdesigned in a way so that the masticatoryloads are transmitted to the periodontiumand to the alveolar bone partly with the

helpof the teeth and partly with the help of themucosa.

Mucosa Borne

•The type of a partial denture which isdesigned in a way so that the masticatoryloads are transmitted to the periodontiumand to the alveolar bone exclusively with

thehelp of the mucosa.

Classification based on Major Connector•If the major connector is constructed of a

cast metal alloy the RPD is termed DEFINITIVE RPD.

•If the major connector is acrylic, the RPD is termed INTERIM.

Kennedy’s Classification• Kennedy divided partially edentulous arches into

four types:• Class I: bilateral edentulous area located posterior

to natural teeth.• Class II: Unilateral area located posterior to

natural teeth.• Class III: Unilateral edentulous area with natural

teeth present both anterior and posterior to it.• Class IV: single bilateral edentulous area crossing

midline located anterior to the remaining natural teeth

Applegates Rules!

•Most posterior partial edentulous area determine classification type.

•Classification should not precede by any mouth preparation e.g extraction.

•Third molar if to be used as abutment it will be considered as part of classification.

•If third molar is absent and is not be replaced they will not be considered.

•If both second molars of same arch are not to be

replaced they will not be considered.•Edentulous areas other than classification

are referred as Modifications.•E.g class II mod 1 •Extent of tooth loss doesn’t determine

modifications, only number of edentulous areas determine.

•No modifications for class IV.
