CLASSIFICATION OF LIVING THINGS
• There are billions of known species of organisms. •New organisms are still
being found and identified.
• CLASSIFICATION: is the organization of living things into groups based on their similarities so that it is easier to study them.
• TAXONOMY: The scientific study of how living things are classified is called Taxonomy.
• TAXONOMISTS: Scientists that identify and name organisms.

Confusion in using different languages in naming
Latin names are understood by all Taxonomists

• Called the Father of Taxonomy• Developed the modern naming system• BINOMIAL NOMENCLATURE : Two word name
(Genus and species) • Latin or Greek • Italicized in print • Capitalize Genus but not species
• The International Code for Binomial Nomenclature contains the rules for naming organisms.
• All names must be approved by International Naming Congresses to prevent duplicates.
