SCHOOL OF CULTURE AND SOCIETY AARHUS UNIVERSITY CLASSICAL ANTIQUITY AND HERITAGE Research seminars Spring 2019 On Late Antique Literature Aaron Pelttari (Edinburgh): Mapping the history of later Latin literature through prefaces and other paratexts As part of a project to produce the forthcoming Cambridge History of Later Latin Literature, this talk will present a number of the challenges involved in mapping the development of Latin paratexts c. 100–700 CE. During this timeframe, separate prefaces became common even for individual poetic compositions. Likewise, some changes can be traced in the use of titles, summaries / (chapter) headings, and illustrations. Paratexts have often been overlooked because they are unstable textual elements. For that very reason, they offer precious evidence for how texts and textuality were presented at specific points in space and time; they are especially useful for mapping the historical development of later Latin literature. Christian Thrue Djurslev (Aarhus): The new Classics? Making a textual culture in the Christian West Latin-writing Christians produced a vast and exciting corpus of texts in Late Antiquity. But how innovative was this new canon? In this paper, I seek to address the question by exploring some of the ways in which Classical literature helped to shape the Christian creations. Specifically, I examine the Christian appropriation of Queen Semiramis of Assyria. Through the Christian engagement with her literary tradition, we discover the absence or reapplication of key themes from the Classical canon. Quantifying the changes and continuities will help to decide whether the Christian canon was indeed innovative or traditional.
