MODEL ON THE MOVE Building on the great success of the Heritage Runs, we thought that we would add another route for 2017. Paisley Abbey to Stirling will take entrants through lesser known roads across the central belt to the finish at Stirling. It looks as if this will be a very popular route and we already have a number of entries for this Run. Stirling and District Classic Car Club have kindly agreed to host the finish and we are grateful to them for their support. This is just another example of the Scottish clubs working together to make this a great event. (Link to sdccc website www.sdccc.co.uk ) RALLYE MONTE CARLO CLASSIQUE Published by Douglas Anderson Co-ordinator Glasgow Start and UK Leg Rallye Monte Carlo Historique Email: [email protected] Telephone: 01382 731755 You will see from the rest of the e-newsletter that there is a lot going on now that the Monte season is underway. We had the first of a series of get togethers for all those who have already entered or are intending to enter the 2017 Rallye Monte Carlo Historique. There were representatives from seven crews there, so we are already up on last year’s Scottish Starters and I know of several more crews who intend to enter but were unable to attend the meeting. I think that there may have been a bit of ‘information overload’ for the newcomers, but come January I am sure they will be all ready to go. One thing was clear. The enthusiasm for the Monte has not diminished even for those who have been doing it for a number of years and their enthusiasm is contagious. October will be a busy month for the Organising Committee with planning meetings, the next get together for competitors and the Press Launch. Keep an eye on the website www.monte.scot for all the latest and watch the local and national press later in the month because the press launch promises to be something special. Douglas Anderson (Editor) Thank you for the emails and phone calls to let me know how much you enjoyed the new look Monte News and Classic Updates. I am just back home after doing a recce of the Monte route from Paisley Abbey to Dover, visiting traditional rally stopovers on the way. One of these is a very famous café where rally drivers of the 1950’s and 60’s used to stop off for a bite to eat before embarking on the ferry from Dover to Calais. The Roadhouse café is on the A20 at Lenham and is full of rally memorabilia – dozens of rally plates, photographs and posters. It reminded me of the café at the top of the Turini. I had a word with the owner and let him know that we were Classic Updates ISSUE 2 ... This could be the last time... planning to have a stop en route to the port. He was very enthusiastic about it but said that he had plans for the site and intended to demolish the café and build industrial units, however it would still be there in January. I think it would be a shame if all the history of the café was lost. As well as famous rally folk it has been the haunt of other famous people, including Ian Fleming, the author of the James Bond books, who used to get off the 007 bus to London, sit at one of the tables in the corner and write for a couple of hours, then continue his journey to London. This could be the last opportunity for Monte Carlo Rallye competitors to be part of the story of the Roadhouse café. Let’s hope not. If anyone is interested perhaps we could do a Heritage Run to the Roadhouse café. Just let me know. If you have looked at the monte.scot website recently you will have seen an update regarding the cut off date for entries for the Rallye Monte Carlo Classique. The Classique is now open to models which participated in a Rally Monte Carlo from 1911 to 1980. The Automobile Club de Monaco are looking for interesting and unusual cars from that period, so if you are considering entering but are not sure whether your car will qualify, get in touch and we can check it out. My email address is [email protected] The cost of the Rallye Monte Carlo Classique remains the same as 2016 - €1500 which includes official ACM rally plates and numbers, gifts, finishers award, one night accommodation for the crew in the Fairmont Hotel, Monte Carlo and a lavish buffet meal on the evening of arrival. In addition the Scottish Monte Start Committee is providing one nights’ free accommodation at the night halt on the Monte route through the UK. Entrants from south of the border and overseas will also receive a nights’ free accommodation on 24 January 2017, the night before the Start. This is a very good value for money event and a great way to take part in an authentic Monte Carlo Rallye, run by the Automobile Club de Monaco. Numbers for the Classique are restricted and there is sure to be high demand for the places, so get your entry in soon. SPECTATOR BECOMES PARTICIPANT One of the many spectators at the Start of the Monte this year was Ian Campbell from County Armagh, Northern Ireland. Ian was so taken with the whole event – the atmosphere, crowds, cars etc that he decided that he wanted to get a piece of the action. He has entered his Austin Mini in the 2017 Heritage Run to Dumfries. Ian is a seasoned motorsport competitor and part of Team Ballylough Classics but despite taking part in dozens of events, he has never seen anything like the Paisley Abbey Start. Maybe next year Ian will take another step up and do the full Monte. SPECTATOR BECOMES PARTICIPANT New for 2017 Stirling Heritage Run Jock joins the Vets We never thought we would see the day but Jock Millar has finally admitted that he is a member of the Veterans of Scottish Motorsport Association. Is this an indication that Jock realises that he is no longer a teenager, although he still drives like one! In Jock’s honour and by popular demand we are running the 2nd Jock’s Run on 23 October. This coincides with the Veterans Autumn Run so we have agreed, after a few phone calls and a very nice lunch in Stirling, to join forces and link the two events. The event will have the same format as last year, with the addition of an observational section to keep the navigators on their toes. Should be great fun. Entries are still open. Entry form and regulations can be found on our www.monte.scot website. As this is the 10th anniversary of the KDCVC run to Glen Coe, Alan Duncan, the event organiser has decided to do something a bit different. This year the run will go to Kinlochleven. The Start is at Dobbies Garden Centre, Stirling (FK9 4UF) at 10am sharp on Sunday 9 October, with a stop at the Green Welly Stop, Tyndrum where there will be the now traditional meet up with clubs from the south and Oban. The final destination will be The Highland Getaway Inn, Kinlochleven. (PH50 4RP) Alan says that if you want food you should have a look at the menu on the Inn’s website and phone them on 01855 831 506 as there are likely to be 100 classics there on the day. For more information contact Alan by email on [email protected] The model of the proposed Rest and be Thankful Heritage centre is on the next leg of its tour of Scotland. It forms part of the Dundee Museum of Transport Scottish Motorsport Heritage exhibition which will be on at the museum until the start of next year. If you haven’t been to the museum yet, it is well worth visit and will bring many happy memories of yesteryear. The museum is at Unit 10 Market Mews, Market Street, Dundee DD1 3LA. Their website can be found at www.DMofT.co.uk Admission to the museum is free. Caithness to the Côte D’Azur When the Monte Carlo Rally started from John O’Groats David Whyte Many excellent books have been written about the Monte Carlo Rally but despite the fact that the first British winner started the rally from Caithness in 1926, the Scottish connection during the pre war years has been largely overlooked. This may be due to the lack of an overall winner from among the John O’Groats starters in subsequent years because of the complex scoring system which made it virtually impossible for them to achieve outright victory. However it was still a considerable feat to complete the non-stop journey from the north of Scotland to the south of France in the depth of winter. The cars were not the specialised racing machines of today - most were identical to the models which customers could buy from the showroom. Many instances of resilience and achievement were shown by more than 200 competitors who started from Caithness in the years up until 1939. Those men and women who took up the challenge of the ‘Monte’ have ensured that John O’Groats has a special place in the history of the most famous rally in the world. This book is a tribute to the skill and determination of the drivers and brings the story up to date with the return of the Monte Carlo Classique event to John O’Groats in 2016. Copies of David Whyte’s book can be obtained from SpeedReading Books at £9.99 plus postage and packaging. http://www.srbooks.com/
