Dr . Joseph A . ( Jay) Morgan is the 14th president of Morehead State University .

Dr . Morgan has served as president of Morehead State University since July 1, 2017 . His focus at MSU has been on student success, performance outcomes, academic excellence, as well as university rankings and responsiveness to the region .

Prior to service at MSU, Dr . Morgan served as the state-wide chief academic officer and vice president for academic affairs and student success for the Kentucky Council on Postsecondary Education in Frankfort . Before state-wide service at the Council, Dr . Morgan served as provost and vice president for academic affairs at Murray State University, as well as associate provost, university faculty regent, leadership program director, graduate program coordinator, and professor/teacher educator . He also has early career service as an entrepreneur, as well as being a high school teacher and coach .

Dr . Morgan holds a Ph .D . from Oklahoma State University and a B .S . and M .S . from Murray State University .

He previously served as a board of trustees member of the Southern Association of College and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) .

Dr . Morgan formerly served as a board member of a medical university, several foundation boards, vice chair of a public university board, a bank board, and the Kentucky Educational Professional Standards Board administering public school teacher licensing and educational standards . Additionally, his former public service includes serving four terms as an elected member of a city council, board president of a chamber of commerce, board chair of the United Way, was formerly named Citizen of the Year, is a Rotarian, and has been involved with economic development, banking and other regional initiatives . He has taught, worked and traveled in more than 15 countries for academics, business, research, and development .

Commencement Profiles

Georgia Cali Clark of Princeton will serve as commencement speaker representing the Caudill College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences . She is the daughter of Patrick and Jenny Clark . She will graduate with a Bachelor of Science, neuroscience area and major in Spanish .

Clark was a student in the George M . Luckey Jr . Academic Honors Program . During her time at MSU, she was named Outstanding Undergraduate Student in the Department of Psychology, the Outstanding Senior Neuroscience Student and Outstanding Junior Neuroscience Student .

Clark completed two Undergraduate Research Fellowships at MSU and a summer research opportunity at Purdue University . She has presented research at eight different conferences and meetings .

In addition to being a member of the MSU Dance Team for all four years as an undergraduate student, Clark was also named Outstanding Undergraduate Student in Spanish . She spent six weeks volunteering to teach English in Guatemala and plans to use her Spanish education to help her in her medical career . Clark also volunteers on campus and in her community, participating in senior center visits, helping with the Tilden Hogge Elementary School’s Fall Festival and Book Fair, doing community clean-up and serving as a peer mentor in the International Peer Mentoring Program .

Clark was recently offered an annual $10,000 scholarship to attend the University of Kentucky (UK) School of Medicine . After completing medical school at UK, Clark plans to pursue a career as a neurologist .

Zackary Highley of Owingsville will serve as commencement speaker representing the Elmer R . Smith College of Business & Technology . His parents are Mindy (Class of 91) and Jeff Highley (Class of 93) . He earned a Bachelor of Business Administration in Marketing with minors in social media and public relations and event planning .

Highley has been actively involved with marketing for MSU Athletics throughout his undergraduate career . He served as a marketing and promotions student associate in August 2017 and as marketing and fan engagement coordinator beginning in May 2020 . He received the Outstanding Marketing Student Award from the Elmer R . Smith College of Business and Technology .

Highley was active and engaged in the MSU campus community . He has been a Student Alumni Ambassador for all four years at MSU . From Aug . 2019, he was intramural chair and an events committee member . He earned Most School Spirit Honor awards two years in a row (2017-18, 2018-19), was given the Mr . Morehead Award, presented to an outstanding male that is very involved on campus, in 2018-19 and was named Student Alumni Ambassador Member of the Year for 2019-20 .

He is also the president and founder of the Flight Crew Athletic Involvement Organization from August 2017 to May 2019 . This 20-member organization supports a positive culture for athletic involvement at MSU .

Highley plans to continue his education at MSU, pursuing a Master of Business Administration and later pursuing a career in branding, consumer engagement and social media .

Elizabeth LaBreche of Morehead will serve as the commencement speaker representing the College of Science . She is the daughter of Marvin and Rebecca Hereford and is the wife of Clay LaBreche (Class of 19) . She earned a Bachelor of Science in Biology and a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics .

LaBreche is a 2017 graduate of the Craft Academy for Excellence in Science and Mathematics at MSU . She served as a peer tutor and worked with Craft Academy students to develop a business model and successfully competed at several statewide business competitions . As a Craft Academy student, she also completed an internship with the Kentucky Commission of Agriculture and traveled abroad to both Germany and Switzerland to represent the Academy and MSU as she and her academy peers studied renewable energy .

As an undergraduate student, she was accepted into the George M . Luckey Jr . Academic Honors Program . She worked as a tutor in the Mathematics Learning and Testing Center and completed a two-year Undergraduate Research Fellowship under the direction of professor of biology Dr . Geoff Gearner . Since May 2018, LeBreche has worked as a laboratory analyst in the Morehead State Water Testing Laboratory .

LaBreche was a member of the Delta Tau Chapter of Kappa Delta Sorority, where she served in several roles . Since November 2019, she has served as vice president of community service and helped organize an event at the Space Science Center for area Girl Scouts and their families . She also organized a virtual philanthropic event during the COVID-19 pandemic to benefit Gateway Children’s Advocacy Center and Prevent Child Abuse America . LaBreche has also been a member of the Cicero Society during her undergraduate career at MSU, serving as vice president and later as president .

LaBreche plans to enroll in graduate school to study epidemiology and pursue a career in public health .

The University Mace The practice of carrying a mace in academic processions dates to medieval times in England when a person bearing a mace, a formidable weapon, walked in front of the highest-ranking official as they entered and departed ceremonial occasions, to protect him or her from personal injury .

As adapted by European and American universities, the mace has become a symbol of office to the institution’s president and is carried by a distinguished member of the faculty . At Morehead State, the joint office of faculty grand marshal and mace bearer is held by the current recipient of the Distinguished Teacher Award .

The mace of Morehead State University was fashioned from Eastern Kentucky walnut in 1984 by John S . VanHoose, a retired faculty member from the Department of Industrial Education and Technology .

Academic Costumes The wearing of academic costumes is a custom that goes back to the Middle Ages . Since the early European and English universities were founded by the church, the students and teachers were required to wear distinctive gowns at all times . Although the custom was brought to this country in Colonial days, the requirement for students was soon dropped . The custom for professors was confined to special occasions such as graduation exercises and inaugurations of new presidents . With the increase in the number of educational institutions and the development of new subject-matter fields, some confusion arose in time about the type of gown and the specific color to denote various degrees . To introduce desirable uniformity and set up a clearing house for new developments, a commission representing leading American colleges produced The Intercollegiate Code in 1895 . In 1932, a national committee of the American Council on Education revised this code into The Academic Costume Code . It was revised in 1959 . Although not obligatory, most of the educational institutions in the country follow it in awarding their degrees, earned and honorary .

The most significant part of the academic dress is the hood . The color of its velvet border indicates the academic field, and it is lined with the color or colors of the institution granting the degree . The hoods of those receiving a Master of Arts or an honorary degree of Doctor of Letters have those same color indications, but each successively higher degree carries with it a longer hood . The doctoral hood also has side panels on the back .

Although most doctoral gowns are black with black velvet bars and panels, in some cases the color of the gown is that of the university conferring the degree . All such gowns have black bars and panels .

Academic fields may also be indicated by the color of velvet on the doctoral gowns; three two-inch bars on the sleeves and a five-inch border extending from the back of the neck down the two sides in front . For the degree of Doctor of Philosophy, the color is dark blue; for Doctor of Medicine, green; for Doctor of Education, light blue; for Doctor of Science, golden yellow . These colors also appear in the velvet of the hood unless the hood represents an honorary degree . The Doctor of Laws has purple velvet . The Doctor of Humanities is white, as is the Doctor of Letters . The Doctor of Public Administration has a hood with velvet in pale aqua .

Caps are black . Tassels are usually black for bachelor’s and master’s degrees, gold for doctorates . Gowns for bachelor’s and master’s are plain black, but sleeves of the latter are short with “trailing elbows .” Doctoral gowns of European universities are usually very colorful . The caps are often of some soft material such as velvet and are ordinarily not of the conventional mortar-board shape . Several examples may be seen in the University faculty:
