Plainfield High SchoolValedictorian, Brianna Taylor

Welcome township officials, Plainfield Public School Board members, Superintendent Dr. Mitchell, Administrators, Teachers, Support staff, family, friends, and fellow graduates. WE MADE IT!!! I’m proud to be the Valedictorian of Plainfield High School’s Class of 2020. I didn’t think this moment would happen. I am relieved to be on your screen not just for this special occasion but to celebrate overcoming the past few months of virtual learning and social distancing. I don’t know about you, but these past few months of high school were not at all easy for me. But I remember something my grandmother had always said, “this too shall pass.” It has been overwhelming, frustrating, and upsetting to find out the graduation we have always expected and dreamed about is not going the way we imagined. But we are here to celebrate this high school achievement together virtually. If nobody else has said it, let me be one of the first to say, “Great Job! Gran

Trabajo!” We all did it!

The last few months of our senior year have been challenging and overwhelming. Don’t let this style of celebration define how you see and pursue your future. We have worked really hard to get where we are today. Our hard work has paid off. Our sweat and tears have paid off. Those times when we really were contemplating dropping out of school but didn’t, paid off. From climbing those forever tiresome stairs every period our freshman year to stressing out over applications our senior year, we have overcome a great deal of events. Therefore, I would like for all of us, the Class of 2020, to give yourselves a pat on the back for pushing through and making it to the end of high school and GRADUATING.

To keep you all motivated when times get tough in the future, I would like to share with you this poem called “Let No One Steal Your Dreams” by Paul Cookson.

Let no one steal your dreamsLet no one tear apart

The burning of ambitionThat fires the drive inside your heart

Let no one steal your dreamsLet no one tell you that you can’t

Let no one hold you backLet no one tell you that you won’t

Set your sights and keep them fixedSet your sights on high

Let no one steal your dreamsYour only limit is the sky

Let no one steal your dreamsFollow your heartFollow your soul

For only when you follow themWill you feel whole

Set your sights and keep them fixedSet your sights on high

Let no one steal your dreamsYour only limit is the sky.

To all those who seemed to be stumbling blocks throughout my high school career. Thank you for requiring me to learn how to fend for myself, stick up for myself, and demand the best education possible. I would like personally to thank you, Mr. Galarza and Ms. Shipman for making yourselves available and being patient for answering all of my questions and addressing my concerns. Thank you, Ms. Johnson for allowing me to vent when I needed to and encouraging me to try new things. To my cheer coaches, Ms. Smith and Ms. Murphy, thank you for all the loving stern conversations and consistent leadership. Last but not least, thank you Mom, Dad, Lena, Kendell, and my family including my grandparents as they look down upon me, for supporting me through my high school years, teaching me skills, and instilling strong moral values, which enabled me to become who I am.

Yes the Corona Virus took away time from our senior year with our friends. However, the time we have apart gives us time to reflect with ourselves and our families. I believe the pandemic is providing us a clean slate to make a difference in our society and realize the important elements of life. I believe this class will make a difference in today’s society; so SHINE THE LIGHT, make way, because the Class of “20/20” will see their goals and dreams with crystal clear vision. CONGRATULATIONS CLASS OF 2020. It’s been real. Thank you.

Plainfield High SchoolValedictorian, Brianna Taylor

Great Job!”

Gracias.
