Designed to complement the 2011–2012 Obermann Center-International Programs Humanities Symposium, Comics, Creativity, and Culture: International and Interdisciplinary Perspectives, the conference was held on

October 5, 2011 at several locations in the Iowa Memorial Union. The Class Act Comics Conference collaboration involved students and teachers from 24 Iowa middle and high schools, UI faculty and students, UIMA staff and

volunteers, internationally-known artists, and local artists. The objective of the conference was to engage students with contemporary artists of graphic novels and comic books through participation in a wide variety of

activities. The Class Act Comics Conference was designed to address curriculum standards and learning objectives in language arts, social studies, and the visual arts.
