September 2019 Dear Class 11 parents and student, Please find the following details of intended elective courses for 2019. We are encouraging students to discuss their electives with you and to make their choices by Monday 15th October. All students have met with Melanie Bray the Careers Advisor, who will have talked about elective choices in the light of what they are planning to do in the future. If you need more support with this, let us know as soon as possible. As outlined in this booklet, Class 12 NCEA Level 3 courses, students need to choose five (or, in negotiated cases, four) of the NCEA elective courses listed. Every year we do our utmost to ensure the timetable is written so that the maximum number of students are accommodated according to their passions, interests, and qualification needs. The High School Qualifications Committee (HSQC) considers every request for electives and individualized courses, including Correspondence courses, and will make the final ruling on all such cases. Thus elective choices should be considered as requests which will be finalized after HSQC approval is given. Please note:

The course descriptors in this document may be modified for 2019.

Although we endeavor to accommodate the choices of the maximum number of students, some students will not be able to have their first choices, and so students should identify a sixth possible choice.

Independent Project from 2019 is restored as a compulsory component in the curriculum, while aspects of the assessment of the project will be open to individual choice.

University Entrance (UE): To gain UE, students will need:

NCEA L3, including 14 credits each in 3 approved subjects. All the courses in this booklet feature approved subjects and achievement standards for University Entrance.

10 literacy credits, 5 from reading and 5 from writing. These may be from Level 2 English, Drama, Media Studies, History main lesson, or may be from Level 3 standards in other subjects where those standards include a significant amount of reading and/or writing. For Achievement Standards that meet both reading and writing, it is possible to split the standard to fulfil the literacy requirement. For example, Media Studies AS91251 can contribute 2 credits to the reading requirement and 2 credits to the writing requirement.

Course Endorsements: Course endorsement provides recognition for a student who has performed exceptionally well in an individual course. Students will gain an endorsement for a course if, in a single school year, they achieve:

14 or more credits at Merit or Excellence, and

at least 3 of these credits from externally assessed standards and 3 credits from internally assessed standards. (Note: this does not apply to Physical Education, or Level 3 Visual Arts).

Michael Park School Certificate Michael Park School Certificates will be awarded to class 12 students in 2019 following similar rules as the previous years. It is a local qualification, rather than one recognised by NZQA like NZCSE or NCEA.

Grounds for awarding the Certificates: The requirement for 2019 is that students successfully complete 80% of all their work, with a limit on the number of credits (14) awarded to each elective. In practice this means 80% of:

14 credits for each elective course taken.

12 credits for Independent Project (I.P.).

A Weighted Grade Average determines how they will receive the Michael Park School Certificate:

Alternative Courses Some students have an alternative course arranged by the school, which may be formal like a Correspondence Course, Gateway, or individual programmes of STAR courses devised and monitored by Michael Park. All these count as appropriate courses, and will be awarded an appropriate number of credits to the maximum of 14.

Courses at a higher or lower level Some students may be following courses at a higher or lower level (e.g. L2 in class 12). Credits from these courses count equally with credits at the level of the certificate, with the proviso that not more than 25% of total credits are at a lower level. If there are more than 25% of the total credits at a lower level, the certificate will be awarded at a lower level.

Main Lessons All main lessons will be assessed for our local Michael Park School Certificate. The content of main lessons may inform the work of elective courses and if there is a naturally occurring evidence then NCEA achievement standards might grow out of main lessons.

Architecture This main lesson involves the study of the structure, style and culture of the major architectural movements that have influenced us. Practical work plays an important part of this course, and students design a house for themselves.

Class 12 installation project The Installation Project gives Class 12 the opportunity to work together creatively in their last year of school. The class collaborates to create a final artistic offering to the community from the impulse of ‘World Consciousness’ and the premise of creating something from nothing, with nothing but themselves. Note: Preparation for the Installation Project is treated as a main lesson separate from the Installation Project itself, so the whole piece of work has the weight of two main lessons.

Life Skills This main lesson exposes our Class 12's to some general knowledge that will be useful to them entering the world outside of school. We discuss the terminology, expectations, and requirements for employment, renting, and living as well as their rights and responsibilities when living in a wider community. Students are required to complete and hand in a resume, job covering letter and a simple budget based on their current goals for next year.

The chemistry of daily life In this main lesson students will be looking at processes in the body and the environment from the chemical point of view. The cultural and economic influence of life styles will be considered and student research on a current issue in health or environment will be presented as a public speech.

The nature of the universe This main lesson is under construction. Students will investigate the nature of the universe in terms of material and spiritual realities.

Novel This main lesson seeks to engage students in exploring their own individual self-knowledge as well as an understanding of the world of historical fiction. Through studying the novel and issues relating to it, they can observe both character, social and self- making sense of their own lives.

Philosophy Under the unifying theme of “truth, beauty, and goodness”, students study a range of key philosophical concepts, and contemporary issues. We discuss and reflect on these in class and the students write up their personal reflections and statements. The students then choose their own issue of interest to produce a position paper about truth and goodness and create a piece of art to express beauty.

World Futures In this main lesson we will look at possible ways to bring positive change for the future of the world. These will include the way we think about problems, how we organize our institutions, examples of individuals making real change in their own communities and who may affect the whole world, and also technical innovations that will bring positive benefits to the world. We will look at innovative world views and our possible place within them.

Independent Project Independent Project for Class 12 is a compulsory part of their studies. During the year, students undertake an Independent Project which includes research, practical, written, and presentation components. Students propose a topic for their study that is ratified by the teachers. This project develops skills that are useful in future study pathways, utilising time management, self-motivation and completion of a yearlong endeavour. A successful Independent Project engages the student’s interest, works with their skills and abilities, challenges them to go further than they believe possible, and opens doorways to future pathways.

INDEPENDENT PROJECT

Proposal: Your proposal for your Independent Project will need to plan not only your area of exploration, but also what ground you expect to cover during the year, your timeline, who you will approach as your outside expert or consultant, what resources you will need, your work style, and how you will cover the required components during the year.

Time allocation: The vast majority of the work for this project will be outside school time. Students should expect to complete 3-5 hours a week on their Independent Project. However, students will meet regularly with the teacher in charge of Independent Project once a week in school time and should organise regular meetings with their outside expert.

Requirements: The undertaking of an Independent Project is an option and if taken can count towards for the successful completion of the Michael Park School Certificate. Within the Independent Project, students are required to complete a written component and a practical component, and to present their work to the public as an exhibition and/or a speech. There is also a requirement on students to complete a Service Leadership component at some stage during their Class 12 year. If this combines easily with their Independent Project, this is ideal, but in other cases, students will need to find other opportunities to work practically on behalf of other people or the community.

Oral Component 2 credits Construct and deliver an oral presentation OR construct an audio-visual presentation to replace the oral presentation.

Service Leadership Component

2 credits Undertake a task of importance for something or someone apart from themselves. From 2019, Class 11 are doing this component. 2019 will be the last year that Class 12 do this component.

Michael Park School NCEA Level 3 Courses for 2019

Level 3 – BIOLOGY

The course is designed to offer an in-depth study of Biology. The structure of the course is based around two topics on different aspects of evolution, which are assessed in the NCEA November exams, and three topics assessed internally at school during the year.

The course itself is taught at fast pace to get through the content and students will need to demonstrate a sound work ethic inside and outside of the classroom. A consistent approach to homework and revision is vital to success in this course.

This subject is required or recommended for entry into courses such as biological sciences, veterinary science, optometry, medicine, horticulture and agriculture, nursing, certificate of science, occupational therapy.

All Biology Level 3 standards offered may be used for UE literacy (see below).

Course Material: If selecting Level 3 Biology for 2019, you will be asked to complete a billing form for the 2019 Level 3 Biology Workbook + AME exam prep workbook. The cost is about $50.

Level 3 – CHEMISTRY

The Class 12 Chemistry programme is a full year Level 3 NCEA programme that builds on concepts developed in Class 11 Chemistry. Atomic structure and periodicity in the Periodic table are explored. Chemical bonding and the significance of enthalpy and entropy in Chemical reactions is studied. REDOX reactions in batteries provide a practical component, as well as a completely new topic on spectroscopy that gives the students insight into modern analytical techniques in Chemistry.

The structure of the course is based around three external topics which are assessed in the NCEA November exams and an internal topic assessed at school during the year. A second internal is also offered for those who want to ease the pressure on the external exams. The course itself is taught at fast pace to get through the content and students will need to demonstrate a sound work ethic inside and outside of the classroom. A consistent approach to homework and revision is vital to success in this course. The course is designed to offer an in depth study of Chemistry.

This subject is required for entry into courses such as intermediate pre-requisite for engineering, veterinary, and forestry, needed in Biology degrees. Leads to Polytechnic courses. Also needed for any career with a laboratory basis. Desirable for nursing, radiology, agriculture, medicine, pharmacy and engineering.

Level 3 – DRAMA

Our aim is to experience creativity, theatre history and new contexts through performance. This involves performing an historical theatre form such as Epic Drama or Elizabethan Theatre, using texts from different cultures and experiences, plus creating our own performances through devising/directing.

Drama provides confidence building, skills to think on the feet, a thorough appreciation for language and theatre, plus the ability to empathize with people from different cultures and experiences. Drama also offers the chance for students to bring their learning to their feet and express themselves through their bodies and to develop significant skill in oratory.

It is necessary to experience theatre shows, so all students will need to attend at least two organized theatre shows, at a cost of approximately $60 in total. These are usually within school hours and we try to minimize costs by taking public transport or arranging private vehicles. If we do need to see a show out of hours, parents will be notified and transport will be arranged.

While a lot of rehearsing and preparation for performance is done during school hours, it is necessary to do extra rehearsals either after school or during weekends. These are organized in accordance with student’s other commitments so that we are not adding excessively to their other workloads. However, with the substantial acting role and other internals, after hours’ rehearsals are a necessity.

While the entry requirement is Level 2 Drama, students may negotiate with the Drama teacher. For any student to pick this up at level 3 without completing the subject at any other level is difficult. There is a lot of work and paperwork required for this subject, so it should not be entered into lightly. This is a demanding but dynamic subject, which provides opportunities to develop significant skill and achieve strong results.

Drama Level 3 Standards may also be used for UE literacy (see below) and students who perform a significant role in the Class 12 play can earn 5 L3 credits.

This subject may be a strong choice for students with an interest in language, media, performance, physicality and the creative arts.

Level 3 – ENGLISH

English Level 3 offers 25 credits: 12 External credits and 13 or 14 Internal credits. It is not necessary to attempt all of the External Standards in this course. You should discuss your individual future goals with your teacher to determine your best course of action.

All draft writing work must be completed in class time. At home, students are expected to type up final copies of drafted work, gather information necessary for assessments, be reading all of the texts necessary for the developed personal responses and rehearsing their speeches. Completed assessments must be printed and handed in as a hardcopy. Anything emailed will not be marked.

English provides all of the necessary writing skills for university study, communication and employment. It also helps prepare students for presenting themselves in job interviews, conducting themselves in all manner of speaking and writing situations and gives them the confidence to express themselves while also becoming discerning consumers of media.

Level 3 - MATHEMATICS – CALCULUS

This course is academically demanding and requires students to have an excellent grasp of Algebra, Graphing techniques, Calculus and Trigonometry.

Calculus is a prerequisite for tertiary mathematics courses and many physical sciences, engineering and economics courses (particularly finance).

Level 3 – MATHEMATICS – STATISTICS

This course requires students to have a good understanding of Level 2 Statistics, Probability and Graphs.

Statistics is studied by two thirds of University of Auckland undergraduate students so is beneficial to almost all disciplines. Study of Statistics is particularly useful to any students wishing to study the biological or physical sciences, medicine and commerce.

Level 3 – MEDIA STUDIES

The media is a powerful force in our lives. Television, film, radio, newspapers, video games, mobile phones and the internet, all provide a steady stream of conflicting and confusing messages to us. Media literacy is therefore vital for students in the twenty-first century. Media Studies helps you, as a student, in a variety of ways.

It teaches you: * that media messages are a construction of reality, not reality itself. * how media products are constructed. * that the media is enjoyable, entertaining, persuasive and powerful.

It allows you, as a student: * to put theory into practice in your own media production. * to transfer media literacy skills across different subjects. * to see beyond the screen and read between the lines – to become ‘media literate’ and transfer your literacy skills to any media text.

This level 3 course offers 4 external credits and 13 internal credits. The aim of this course is to provide further understanding of film production and/or the written medium. You will also look at film theory, media’s role in society and pursue areas of your own interest within media.

Media Studies develops skills and knowledge to enable you to be an active participant in society and learn useful tools applicable to a wide variety of careers, such as:

Journalism, Radio, Television & Film Industry, Public Relations, Advertising, Research, Teaching, Marketing, Sociology….and more!

Literacy credits are available in the external, plus there is an opportunity to utilise an internal assessment for the English 3.4 writing portfolio assessment.

Level 3 – MUSIC

This course will cover music making and music studies. Music making refers to practical musicianship skills such as solo and group performances, composition and arranging. Music studies refers to theoretical knowledge, analysis and research. Students will mostly be assessed internally although there is one optional external standard offered (AS91423).

Please note that NCEA L3 stipulates that students should have at least five years of tuition on an instrument to meet the required level for the performance standards. However, there are students who are excellent self-taught musicians who may be considered after an audition. Please note that students who wish to enroll in AS91416 need to have achieved at least merit in their solo and group performance standards in NCEA L2. Students who wish to specialise in composition will need to have achieved L2 Composition and/or show that they can compose at an appropriate level.

Students will meet with the music teacher to discuss their perceived strengths and a mutually agreed course will be designed for each student. Students should be aware that self-management skills are highly important in this subject.

The research standard may be used for UE literacy (see below).

Level 3 - PHYSICAL EDUCATION

In this course students will enjoy a range of practical activities supported by theory work related to movement and sociocultural issues. The course is internally assessed with the students having the opportunity to gain 14 NCEA credits in a variety of assessment tasks. Within this course students will participate in a performance improvement program, which outlines the biophysical skills in improving ones performance. As well as this students will also be given the opportunity to be assessed in Rock Climbing and the Tough Gal and Guy Mud Run.

Level 3 – PHYSICS

The skills learned in Physics are considered necessary for many tertiary level courses including architecture, medicine, food technology, physiotherapy, radiography, computer science, flying, engineering, optometry, and other courses.

The areas of Physics covered at Level 3 are basically the same as Level 2, however you should expect another step up in difficulty from Level 2. There is no escaping that Physics involves mathematics skills, so you need to be confident with Level 2 mathematics AND you are strongly advised to take a Level 3 mathematics course at the same time as your Level 3 physics (calculus tends to be more relevant to Physics than statistics).

Please note direct entry into the School of Engineering at University of Auckland requires you to have all 3 externally assessed topics for Physics in addition to some compulsory Calculus externals. This causes your Physics course to be very heavy on exams, which some students find stressful. It will be essential for you to keep up with Physics throughout the year, even though the temptation is to put it off and focus on internal assessments in other subjects.

Course Material: If selecting Level 3 Physics for 2019, you will be asked to complete a billing form for the 2019 Level 3 Physics Workbook. The cost is about $30.

Level 3 – SUPPORTED CORRESPONDENCE GERMAN

This course will combine the distance education offered by Te Kura with a German tutor based at Michael Park providing face-to-face tuition and additional support to complete the course. This course advances students’ linguistic development and German language skills. It challenges them to read, write and speak German in unfamiliar contexts and using more complex language, which broadens their vocabulary, grammatical and written abilities. The focus is built around various themes that explore different aspects of German culture, its people and events. Students are challenged to express their thoughts and opinions on topics, including traditional stories, media and the creative arts, in German as much as possible.

Level 3 - TECHNOLOGY HARD MATERIALS (Ceramics)

The level 3 Hard Materials Technology course will have a major focus on ceramics. It will enable students to undertake one or more projects that will be carried out with research, concepts, developments, drawing, and working with resistant materials, prototypes and final outcomes. Students will also have the opportunity to create and test their own glazes as well as gaining some understanding of the chemistry behind glazes.

There will be the opportunity to work with a wide range of clay including porcelain, stoneware, earthenware, slip cast and paperclay. Techniques will include handbuilding, throwing, moulding and slip casting. Students will have the opportunity to make their own plaster moulds.

At level three it is expected that the student has a good understanding of ceramic techniques and is able to plan their work to a high standard, students should be able to further their knowledge of the subject and refine their skills.

The assessments may be interconnected by using the research and development findings from one achievement standard for other assessment. Students keep a record of progress in a visual diary or a design workbook. The objective is to provide evidence of work for assessments as it demonstrates your decision making processes. The record of work will include research, planning, development and on-going evaluation of the conceptual design.

What could you do with this course? Hard Materials Technology (Ceramics) encompasses a wide range of skills that will give you knowledge for courses in industrial, product, object and ceramic design, engineering disciplines and technical careers in manufacturing. It would also give a good understanding of craft for students wishing to study craft or design at a higher level.

Materials Most materials will be provided. You will need an A4 or A3 visual diary / design workbook, pens, pencils and ruler. Also recommended is an apron and towel.
