Car of the MonthStepping Stones to my Lotus

by Clarke Taylor

For most of my adult life I’ve been on aquest to find “my” perfect car. Over theyears that definition of perfectionchanged and evolved as I bought, drove, and eventually parted with a wide varietyof sports cars. A short list includes a1973 BMW 2002, a 1958 MGA, a1966 Triumph Spitfire and a 1963MGB. In all, I have owned over 80 carsbut at heart of all the cars I enjoyeddriving the most is a common set of traits.I love small, light-weight cars that are wellbalanced and are unique in appearance.Like most other car enthusiasts I admit Iam a sucker for a car with great lines. That’s what first attracted me to the2005 Lotus Elise. Newly designed forthe US market, the modern sharp edgedstyling and bold colors reminded me ofthe iconic Ford GT40 race car of the1960’s.

Back in 2005 my friend, Andy Rich, toldme that the Elise would soon be availablehere in the US and that I should checkout their website. Sitting at my little Maccomputer I remember the exact momentwhen I saw the first images of the Elise.I must have spent an hour or morecombing over all the details, photos andspecs. Something about the shapes andangles of the car spoke to me. Thesparsely appointed interior was just anotch up in comfort from a race car andI thought their use of the Toyota 1.8L

motor was brilliant. It added a sensereliability to a car that might otherwisehave been perceived as too exotic forsome buyers.

For a long time one of my childhoodfantasies was the thought that somedayI would be just like Steve McQueen. Atten years old I painstakingly built toy carmodels and played with Hot Wheels andof course one of my favorite cartoonswas Speed Racer. Now, as an adult, theclosest I could come to fulfilling some ofthose boyhood dreams was to own whatis essentially a street-legal race car. TheLotus Elise is just that. With a $50,000sticker price, back in 2005. I also knewit would be years before I could afford agood used Elise but at that moment theseed was planted and I was on a mission.

I had started Historic Motor Sports fouryears earlier. It was just a one-man shopfor restoring and repairing 50’s and 60’sclassic cars. In my spare time I had beenrestoring a 1959 Vauxhall Victor and a

1958 Triumph TR10 sedan. These twocars would be the first two steppingstones to my Lotus. Over the next couple

years I brought back to life the VauxhallVictor which, on completion, was soldto BCNH member Pearl Colby. TheTR10 when finished was sold to BobMitchell. In fact that was how I initially

met Bob who is now the current ownerof Historic Motor Sports. The combinedsale of those two cars enabled me to buyback a 1967 MGB-GT “special” that Ihad sold to a local man several yearsearlier in order to get seed money to startHMS. The BGT (my first full restoration)was finished in the late 1980’s and for17 years was driven by my mother. Nowsome 20-plus years later it was in needof some attention.

Over the course the winter of 2010 Iremoved and replaced the entire brakesystem, suspension, exhaust, fuel linesand tank, and installed new leather seatsand a carpet kit. In the spring of 2011 Ioffered the car to Bob Mitchell knowingit would be in good hands. By midsummer of 2011 I had about a third ofmy targeted budget for the Elise. I waslooking for another car to invest in and

Well, “The Season” is certainly upon us.June and July are absolutely packed withat least one event scheduled by BCNHand/or other associated clubs everyweekend. There are several weekendswith two or more events scheduled. There is no expectation that you willmake it to them all, but with over 200Members now – and with 84 membersnow attending Monthly Meetings wehave tried to schedule at least someevents that fit in with your personal in-terests – and with your schedule.

As I write this I am preparing to headdown to the British-by-the-Sea “Gath-ering” in Mystic/New London, CT. Thisevent is staged by the good folks at theConnecticut MG Club and it has becomeone of the regular events on the sched-ule for many BCNH members. Lastyear we swept the “Big Healey” classeswith Dave LeBlanc taking 1st in theHealey 100 Class with his dashing Redand Black 1958 100/6 and Elliot Moretaking 1st in the Healey 3000 Class withhis British Racing Green 1967 Healey3000.

Bob & Di Stanley also took 1st in theTR-6 Class with the famous Magenta1972 TR-6. They’ll take their GT6 thisyear.

In addition to the three 1st in Class, Dave

& Jane Corbett (’78 MGB-GT),Geoff Dupont (’72 TVR 2500) andmy ’52 Riley RMF all took 2nd in Classtrophies. Note that after winning 1st inClass with her 1970 MGB-GT the pre-vious year, Sue MacDuff graciously“obscured” the entry number on her carto give others their time in the sun lastyear – and to allow her to “walk away”from her car and enjoy the day.

And “enjoying the day” is key here. Theprincipal organizers, Steve and AnnieWincze, go out of their way to stress thatthis is “A Gathering” and not a “Show.”It’ s nice to take home trophies, but intruth, the winners are everyone that par-ticipates. The Harkness Park is a beau-tiful old estate right on Long IslandSound and it’s hard to think of manyother nicer places to spend a day withyour friends and fellow LBC enthusiasts.

Check out the Events Calendar on thewww.BCNH.org website and elsewherein this newsletter to see all of the oppor-tunities that there are to get together withfellow BCNHers – and members ofother car clubs – to enjoy your car(s)and their fellowship. As noted above,we have at least one event scheduled forevery weekend – and two or three thingsscheduled for some weekends. I inviteyou to pick the ones that are of mostinterest to you and to participate in asmany as possible.

You should most certainly not miss TheQueen’s Birthday Party at the Karle

Kompound on June 27. That is alwaysa great time.

If you have any interest in VintageSports Car Racing, I recommend youto the Vintage Racing Day at the Th-ompson Motor Speedway in Thomp-son Connecticut on the weekend of June19, 20 & 21. Thompson Speedway wasthe first “Road Course” in the US in the1950s and there will be cars there thatraced on the track 60 years ago in itsglory days.

On Saturday July 11 we will return tothe Castle-in-the-Clouds show stagedby the Trustees of the Castle itself andnot by an “outside car club.” They aregoing all out to make it a great show.

Oh, and don’t forget our own Show ofDreams on July 25. We will return thisyear to the grounds of the Alvirne HillsHouse on Route 102 in Hudson for thesecond year. Now that people knowwe are there, we are expecting the Showto be bigger and better than ever.

As we have said many times before, thereason this club has so many interest-ing things to do is because its mem-bers do so many interesting things. Please help us to keep that interest levelhigh.

The members who have the most fun arethe ones who are there to get in on it.So Saith Prime Minister Bob,

Minutes

The June meeting of the Royal Order ofBCNH met on June 1 at MoeJoes inManchester. I had the yummy lobsterroll special.

Prime Minister Bob Mitchell called themeeting to order not so promptly at7:02PM. We proceeded to approve theMay minutes as published in the news-letter (no one reads them anyway) andwe also approved the Treasurer’s reportwhich I don’t bother to look for or read– but thanks anyway John Giese.

We had three new members in atten-dance. We welcomed new membersDennis Casey from Rindge with a 1984XJ6, and Jens Griem who has a 1960MGA and a 1964 TR4, and RodShanker who was either a guest or a newmember. He has a 1980 MGB Ltd anda 1959 MGA. My only excuse for notgetting the name right is that he snuck inthe door and sat in the corner by thedesserts.

First we reviewed last month’s events –the tech session was a success as always. Thank you Historic Motor Sports forhosting the day. Thanks to Doris forcooking the burgers and dogs!

Seven teams from BCNH attended theJANE Magical Mystery Tour. We spentquite a bit of time at a golf course andthe rest of the time we were lost and look-ing for the post office in ManchesterVermont. Someone has some photos. We won bottles of wine anyway and thecocktails and dinner were delish.

We also had a discussion about how toget a title for your car if you do not haveone. If you plan to sell your car and thebuyer is out of country or out of statethey will need a title. You simply go toyour town hall and apply, get a signaturefrom a duly authorized law enforcement

officer, pay your money to the town andstate and you are good to go.

Show of Dreams

We got an update on the Show ofDreams. If you were not in attendanceat the meeting we assigned you to vari-ous committees and put your name onthe volunteer lists.

We are looking for raffle items for theraffle table. We published a list of itemswe would like to see. If you don’t havetime to get something and get it to Wayneand Maggie Bolen you have two options, you can simply send them money andthey will go buy an item (your own per-sonal shopper, if you’re good you canbribe them into buying your Christmaspresents and wrapping them), or if youhave items with no way to get them tothe show Wayne will come pick themup and mow your lawn. We have 17vendors for the car show! And we nowhave 30 cars pre-registered. If you havenot registered make sure you do it soonso you and receive a goodie bag.

Our calendar girl Sue MacDuff reviewedthe upcoming events. On the 7th is theBritish by the Sea show. There is a cruisein to the British Beer Company inManchester on the 9th. There is a showin Bristol RI on the 11-14 (same orga-nizers as the Stowe British Invasion),June 20th is the JANE spring slalomevent in North Andover MA, the 27th isthe Queen’s Birthday in Chichester, NH(warning there is ½ mile of dirt road tonavigate). And, we have Sunday dinnerdrives and Saturday breakfast drivescoming up.

We then wished Gerry Cleary a HappyBirthday and sang the birthday song. We ate cake – if your birthday is nextmonth please come to the meeting sothat we can have cake again!

Denice Anderson won the $40 from thepotty fund (only because we would notallow Deb Curtis to buy a ticket). We

now have enough money in the potty fundso that we can all enjoy the air condi-tioned real potty at the show.

Car of the Monthcontinued

found a great opportunity to buy another“fixer-upper”. It was a Factory FiveDaytona Coupe that was languishingunder a tarp outside a friend’s garagewith a bad transmission and anundetermined running issue. It was theperfect candidate. This car was uniquein that it was car number 002 owned byBill Hough, the guy who single handedlycreated the master molds from originalphotographs for the owners of FactoryFive Racing. His car was the second carproduced and was a very authentic re-creation of one of the six original ShelbyCobra Daytonas. Over the winter andwell into the spring of 2012 the Daytonawas returned to its original glory. Uponcompletion I invited my wife to join mefor a shakedown drive. Her commentafterward was, “All my senses have beenoffended. It’s loud, smelly and there’s agood chance I’ve loosened a filling.” Iof course thought it was spectacular funto drive. The exhaust fumes and hearingloss were just part of the charm. Withindays of finishing the car I had located abuyer at something short of $30,000 (abargain in today’s market). I had onlydriven it 130 miles but they were prettyexhilarating miles.

So this is about the time my search tofind an orange Elise kicked into highgear. I had been following the Elise usedcar market for years and I knew I couldbuy a nice low mileage example forsomething in the low $30’s. The colorselection had been made years inadvance. The aubergine purple was aclose second. Lime green was too outthere for me and ultimately I really likedthe way the orange showed off thesculptural lines of the car. Interestingly, Inoticed through my searching that mostof the purple, lime green and orange carswere on the west coast and the red, white, yellow and black Elises werepredominately found on the east coast. This made my search a bit more

challenging. I had also noticed thatdespite being fairly new many of theElises on the market already hadmodified exhaust and suspension systemsas well as some “track time”. I wanted abone-stock example that hadn’t spent aportion of its life screaming around atrack at 8200 RPMs. That’s red-line forthe Elises 1.8L Toyota motor.

It was July 1st, 2012. My wife and Iwere at the air show in Portsmouthwatching the Blue Angles flyingoverhead. I was on my cell phone makingan offer on a 2007 “one owner” Elisewith 8,400 original miles. The owner hadpurchased it new from a Denver dealerbut he was now located in a small townin Kentucky just an hour south ofLouisville where my parents live. The carwas listed on Ebay and I needed to endthe auction now so as not to loose it toanother bidder. I called an old collegefriend, Kurt Schafer, and asked him tolog onto Ebay using my password. I thenasked him to hit the “buy it now” button, which he did. As the roar of the jets flewdirectly over our heads I told my wifethat I had just bought a $32,000 Lotus.Maybe it was a good thing that I couldn’thear exactly what she said but at thatmoment nothing could have diminishedthe excitement I felt.

A week later, my friend Rich Tremblayand I were driving to Louisville to meetthe seller and drive the Elise back to NewHampshire. We drove his VolkswagenTDI 18 hours straight through, got agood night’s sleep and the next day an

orange Lotus Elise magically appearedin my parent’s driveway. After a shortmeet and greet and some advice on thebest way to get in and out of an Elise, the previous owners departed and I tookmy first drive in my new orange Elise. Iwas nervous but that wouldn’t last long.Rich and I stayed in Louisville anotherday to relax and then embarked on a twoday return trip back to New Hampshire. An 1,100 mile trip is a great way tobecome familiar with and bond with anew car. When I finally pulled into mydriveway my butt hurt a bit from thesparsely padded seat and my face achedfrom smiling for two days straight.

That was almost three years ago and Ican honestly say I enjoy driving the“Cheetos” car now every bit as much ason the very first day. Driving on thehighway, it’s not uncommon for driversof passing cars to roll their windowsdown to take pictures. I’ve even hadsomeone jiggle a bag of Cheetos out theirwindow followed by a thumbs-up. It’s acar that seems to appeal to people of allages. When they see the shape, the colorand the Cheetos license plate they knowit’s all about having fun. It’s also the onlyLBC I’ve owned with functional air-conditioning, which is a bonus on someof those hot days.

For those of you interested in specs, theElise is a mid-engine, rear wheel drivecar with a fully enclosed aluminum belly-pan bonded to a fiberglass shell. Noframe! The 1.8L Toyota motor withLotus programmed computer allows itto develop 190 BHP on the normallyaspirated version and around 220 BHPon the super charged Elise. Weighingonly 1896 pounds with a groundclearance of five inches and an overallheight of 44 inches, it feels more likedriving an over-sized go-cart than aproper car.

The handling in curves is phenomenalwith almost no body roll. In general, it’s

very easy to drive at both low and highspeeds. The immediate feedback andresponse in handling to the driver instillsa confidence that it will literally gowherever you point it. I may not be SteveMcQueen but when I drive the Elise Ifeel like I could be and that’s probablyas close as I’m going to get to mychildhood dream.

Sadly selling my 1977 MGB because Ihave too many! I have driven this car forthree seasons and it was just inspectedagain this week.It has a great look and a very nice interior. It runs and drives well. It has always beengaraged and the top is new. It has a fewblemishes that are cosmetic, which areminor and overall, not obvious; a trunkcrease and minor rust on one rocker. Thiscar is really fun to drive, as MGs are, andis quite attractive, turning headseverywhere! priced to sell at $5,[email protected] , (603) 472-8005
