The harmonious interplay and

combination of materials, colour,

design, proportion and light

influence a room’s ambience;

they are a decisive feature of an

interior’s quality. Light is a major

design factor in this context;

however, what is equally decisive

is that the luminaires blend

smoothly and unobtrusively

into the interior.

It is easily recognisable as a

member of the successful

CLARIS range, as the latter’s

reduced linear design and strictly

geometrical shape have been

adopted and developed further.

Its external appearance has

been consistently minimised in

line with current trends, without

sacrificing any essential design

feature.

Innovative cell louvre Sophisticated technology in an ultra-compact package

With its cell louvre technology,

Zumtobel is setting new stan-

dards for louvre luminaires. The

cell louvre specially developed

for CLARIS II is only about three

quarters the size of conventional

louvres. Minimalism is also

reflected by the louvre’s appear-

ance: Unlike conventional louvres,

the cell louvre does not consist

of individually assembled alu-

minium parts. On the contrary, it

is moulded in one piece and is

therefore unbeatable in terms of

precision, stability and uniformity.

This comparison of cross-sections (actual size) strikingly illustrates the reduction in size: A CLARIS II luminaire occupies only 65 % of the volume its prede-cessor did.

Cell for cell – a preci-sion instrument: The groove-shaped upper part of the reflector optimises the indirect lighting pattern.

Miniaturising a luminaire poses a

huge challenge to lighting engi-

neers. Yet despite its compact

size, CLARIS II does not make

any compromises in terms of

light output ratio or light distri-

bution. Owing to innovative cell

louvre technology, extremely

high light output ratios are

achieved. In terms of light distri-

bution and lighting effect, too,

CLARIS II outclasses many lumi-

naires with larger louvres. The

photometrically precise design

of the groove of the indirect

reflector provides homogeneous

illumination of the ceiling – this

creates a pleasant lighting ambi-

ence throughout the room, even

with a suspended height of

30 cm. Thanks to this innovative

lighting technology, the glare

reduction specifications accord-

ing to the EN 12464 standard

are met, too.

Zumtobel defines balanced

lighting solutions as those which

provide ultimate lighting quality

and energy efficiency. Lighting

solutions that meet people’s

physical and mental needs and

at the same time help to cut

energy consumption.

The Ergonomic Lighting Indica-

tor (ELI) assesses the three

quality components of a lighting

solution. Firstly, ambient lighting.

Lighting using CLARIS II meets

specifications in the relevant

standards, ensuring visual

performance and comfort. By

additionally brightening up walls

using wallwashers fitted with

“skywhite” lamps, CLARIS II can

exert a positive influence on

people’s health.

CLARIS II floods fitted with

warm white lamps have an

effect at the emotional level.

They produce a pleasant, bene-

ficial room atmosphere.

Ambient lighting upgraded by

additional components boosts

quality but also increases in-

vestment costs. Nevertheless,

the initial extra investment pays

off over time by controlling light

cleverly and exploiting free day-

light. This has a positive impact

on LENI, the Lighting Energy

Numeric Indicator. In the actual

example calculated on the oppo-

site page, there is a drop from

28.7 to 21.67 kWh/m² a with a

CLARIS II installation involving

all three components.
