Section A Current Vintage Section

(Classes 1—13) Bottled wines not necessarily commercially available. Minimum 100 dozen 750ml or equivalent for large producers >150t processed. Minimum 50 dozen 750ml or equivalent for small producers <150t processed. Except for classes 3 & 4 where 32 dozen applies. Entries must comprise a minimum 85% Clare Valley Fruit.

Section B Exhibition Section

(Classes 14—20) Bottled wines not necessarily commercially available. Minimum 50 dozen 750ml equivalent for large producers >150t processed. Minimum 25 dozen 750ml or equivalent for small producers <150t processed. To win best wine of show must win best exhibition trophy in its class. Entries must comprise a minimum 85% Clare Valley Fruit.

Overall, a very good class to judge - all be it, very young wines that need more time to develop and to gain complexity and flesh out. Tannins need more time to settle and integrate into the wine. But great to judge and variations of styles i.e. fresh, bright and juicy plus more structured wine.

Powerful fruit on the top wines. Golds had skilful and sympathetic oak handling that allowed complex fruit to shine. Low scores were usually because fruit had dried out or oak smothered the fruit that was there.

A somewhat disappointing class - many wines disjointed, ripe/unripe flavours, harsh tannins and acid imbalance. Some tired wines - some green characters particularly with grenache - grenache needs care in the vineyard - so more attention and detail. However, emerging varieties showing promise.
