Quote

“If a child doesn’t know how to read, we teach.” “If a child doesn’t know how to swim, we teach.” “If a child doesn’t know how to multiply, we teach.” “If a child doesn’t know how to drive, we teach.” “If a child doesn’t know how to behave, we…….....

……….teach? ………punish?”

“Why can’t we finish the last sentence as automatically as we do the others?”

What is PBS?

School-wide Positive Behavior Support (PBS) is a different way of handling discipline, PBS is…

Proactive: Trying to prevent inappropriate behaviors by putting procedures in place and if needed changing the environment.

Educative: Teaching the students what we expect of them while on our campus (Expectations). Teaching our students the rules and expectations for specific settings (Cafeteria, Hall, Bus, Etc.).

Reinforcement Based: Giving students rewards for when they show the schools expectations and they follow the school rules.

Negative consequences are still given for inappropriate behavior. We want the consequences to change the student’s behavior so the student does not display the same behavior again.

Page 13: Clarcona Elementary School Positive Behavior Support (PBS) 2007-2008.

What about the remaining 20%!!

School-wide PBS is the first step What follows?

Targeted Group PBS – addressing students who are at-risk for school failure, or display a chronic pattern of inappropriate behavior that do not respond to school-wide interventions (approx 10-15%)

Classroom PBS –reflect school-wide expectations for student behavior coupled with pre-planned strategies applied within classrooms

Individual Student PBS –reflect school-wide expectations for student behavior coupled with team-based strategies applied with individual students based upon child-centered behavior (approx. 1-5%)
