Australian BushPoet

“Clancy ofThe

Overflow”

Page 2: Clancy of the overflow

I had written him a letter which I had, for want of better

Page 3: Clancy of the overflow

Knowledge, sent to where I met him down the Lachlan, years ago,

Page 4: Clancy of the overflow

He was shearing when I knew him, so I sent the letter to him,

Page 5: Clancy of the overflow

Just `on spec', addressed as follows, `Clancy, of The Overflow'.

Page 6: Clancy of the overflow

And an answer came directed in a writing unexpected,

Page 7: Clancy of the overflow

(And I think the same was written with a thumb-nail dipped in tar)

Page 8: Clancy of the overflow

'Twas his shearing mate who wrote it, and verbatim I will quote it:

Page 9: Clancy of the overflow

`Clancy's gone to Queensland droving, and we don't know where he are.'

Page 10: Clancy of the overflow

In my wild erratic fancy visions come to me of Clancy

Page 11: Clancy of the overflow

Gone a-droving `down the Cooper' where the Western drovers go;

Page 12: Clancy of the overflow

As the stock are slowly stringing, Clancy rides behind them singing

Page 13: Clancy of the overflow

For the drover's life has pleasures that the townsfolk never know.

Page 14: Clancy of the overflow

And the bush hath friends to meet him, and their kindly voices greet him

Page 15: Clancy of the overflow

In the murmur of the breezes and the river on its bars,

Page 16: Clancy of the overflow

And he sees the vision splendid of the sunlit plains extended,

Page 17: Clancy of the overflow

And at night the wond'rous glory of the everlasting stars.

Page 18: Clancy of the overflow

I am sitting in my dingy little office, where a stingy

Page 19: Clancy of the overflow

Ray of sunlight struggles feebly down between the houses tall,

Page 20: Clancy of the overflow

And the foetid air and gritty of the dusty, dirty city

Page 21: Clancy of the overflow

Through the open window floating, spreads its foulness over all

Page 22: Clancy of the overflow

And in place of lowing cattle, I can hear the fiendish rattle

Page 23: Clancy of the overflow

Of the tramways and the 'buses making hurry down the street,

Page 24: Clancy of the overflow

And the language uninviting of the gutter children fighting,

Page 25: Clancy of the overflow

Comes fitfully and faintly through the ceaseless tramp of feet.

Page 26: Clancy of the overflow

And the hurrying people daunt me, and their pallid faces haunt me

Page 27: Clancy of the overflow

As they shoulder one another in their rush and nervous haste,

Page 28: Clancy of the overflow

With their eager eyes and greedy, and their stunted forms and weedy,

Page 29: Clancy of the overflow

For townsfolk have no time to grow, they have no time to waste.

Page 30: Clancy of the overflow

And I somehow rather fancy that I'd like to change with Clancy,

Page 31: Clancy of the overflow

Like to take a turn at droving where the seasons come and go,

Page 32: Clancy of the overflow

While he faced the round eternal of the cash-book and the journal --

Page 33: Clancy of the overflow

But I doubt he'd suit the office, Clancy, of `The Overflow'.
