Dear Kinfolk, I had the pleasure of going to the Panama City Scottish Festival back in early March with my family. The event was the first Scottish event I’d ever attended, and I had such a pleasant time getting to see every-one’s cultural expression, try some delicious food, and watch the differ-ent games taking place. I couldn’t believe how many people turned out! For those of you who have not had a chance to attend any of this year’s Games thus far, I insist that you go to the Mount Dora Highland Games this upcoming November (see the schedule on page 10).

Games aside, I implore you once more to take part in the creation of our newsletter. Please submit any-thing (especially pictures!) that you would like to see in our Winter 2017 publication—I want this news-letter to reflect all of us here at Clan Donald Florida!

I am also excited to announce that I am moving to Washington, D.C. this month. I’ve been accepted

into a four-year program with Urban Teachers, where I’ll spend one year as a co-teacher and three years in charge of my own classroom teaching Eng-lish at a charter or public middle or high school. During the first two years, I am also required to get my Master’s at Johns Hopkins. I plan on continuing to be Clan Donald FL’s Newsletter Editor as long as I can, but if you (or someone in your family) know a few things about editing & publishing, and would like to take over, please let me, Mary Anne Wolfson, and Richard King know so that we can have a smooth transition!

Winters can be extremely cold in northern Scotland, so the owner of the estate felt he was doing a good deed when he bought earmuffs for his farm worker, Archie.

Noticing, however, that Archie wasn’t wearing the earmuffs even on the coldest day, the owner asked, ‘Didn’t you like the earmuffs I gave you?’ Archie replied, not wish-ing to upset his employer, ‘Och, they are a wondrous thing.’

‘Then why don’t you wear them then?’

Archie explained, ‘I was wearing them the first day, but somebody offered to buy me a drink and I did not hear him.’

Last July, Elizabeth, mother of Nigel MacDonald, passed away at the age of 97 in Dumfries, Scotland. She met her husband of 50 years while serving as a military physical therapist in Kenya during World War II. She worked at many of the S. E. Florida Scottish Games, coming over from Scotland each time only for the weekend. The photo seen here was taken at the S.E. Florida Scottish Games in 1990. Left to right: Elizabeth, Peter (Elaine’s father), Heather, Nigel, Lauren, Elaine (Nigel’s wife).

Flowers of the Forest

Cock-a-leekie Kebab Serves 4

Ingredients: • 2 tbsp fresh lime juice • 4 garlic cloves • 1 piece fresh ginger (2 inches) • 2 green birds eye chillies, chopped • 200mls plain greek yogurt • 1 tsp ground cumin • 1 tsp ground coriander • 1 tsp ground turmeric • 2 tsp ground paprika • A few drops of red food colouring • 20g pack fresh coriander, chopped • 3 skinless chicken breasts cut into 5cm pieces (15

pieces in total) • 2 large leeks • 15 pitted prunes

Instructions: In a blender, purée the lime juice, garlic, ginger, and chillies. Add the yogurt, spices and colour and blend until smooth. Mix with the chicken pieces and

leave over night, if possible. If not, your chicken will need at least 4 hours in the marinade. Separate the green and white parts of the leeks. Blanch the whites of the leeks in boiling water. Wrap the prunes in the green parts of the leeks. Thread the chicken, wrapped prunes and blanched leeks onto your prepared skewers. NB: if you are using wooden skewers make sure you soak them so they don’t burn. Heat the grill to a high heat and lightly oil the grates. Place the skewers on the grill. Cover the grill and cook, turning occasionally until grill marks are visible and the chicken is cooked. If you do not have a grill, then you can use a very hot oven. Serve with tamarind sauce.

GREET OUR STATE COMMISSIONERS

ClanDonaldUSA.org Volume V Issue 1 Summer 2017 Page 6 of 10

Clan Donald comes from the Gaelic “Clann Dhòmhnaill ,” meaning

“children of Donald.” The surname MacDonald comes from “Mac Dhòmhnaill,” meaning “son of Donald.” This pattern is common amongst many of the Highlands’ surnames.

The battle cry of Clan Donald is the Gaelic “Fraoch Eilean,” which translates to “Heathered Isle.”

Heather is the plant badge of Clan Donald. The emblem on the pin used to attach the plant badge became increasingly ornate. Eventually the pin itself became known as the badge or crest worn pinned to the cap. It is not appropriate for anyone, other than a clan chief, to wear eagle feathers pinned to their cap so it is best you just place a sprig of heather in your cap using your appropriate clan crest.

The clan crest evolved from ant-lers, horns, or a carving of an animal on the top (or crest) of the chief’s helmet. “The cross, crosslet fitchee, gules” is the Scottish Heraldry descrip-tion of the unique cross that is exactly like St. Julian's Cross held by a Right Hand, usual-ly wearing a gauntlet. The belt encircling the crest takes the place of the Gaelic phrase “an cirean ceann cinne-adh” (crest of the clan chief). The “belt” indicates the wearer is a member of the clan symbolized by the chief's crest within the “belt”. The “belted” crest emblem became the pin used to hold a sprig of the plant badge in the clansman's hat.

Armadale Castle, built on the Isle of Skye in the late 18th century, is the clan seat. In 1855, the castle was destroyed by fire but has since been partially restored.

Heathered Isle Heritage

Ballad of Glencoe (Chorus) Oh, cruel was the snow that sweeps Glencoe And covers the grave o' Donald. Oh, cruel was the foe that raped Glencoe And murdered the house of MacDonald

They came in a blizzard, we offered them heat, A roof for their heads, dry shoes for their feet. We wined them and dined them, they ate of our meat And they slept in the house of MacDonald.

Chorus

They came from Fort William with murder in mind. The Campbell had orders King William had signed. "Put all to the sword"- these words underlined, "And leave none alive called MacDonald."

Chorus

They came in the night when the men were asleep, This band of Argyles, through snow soft and deep, Like murdering foxes amongst helpless sheep, They slaughtered the house of MacDonald.

Chorus Some died in their beds at the hand of the foe; Some fled in the night and were lost in the snow; Some lived to accuse him who struck the first blow; But gone was the house of MacDonald.

Would you be willing to be a convener in your home area? Clan Donald Florida needs conveners all across the state. Mainly, you would make con-

tact & keep in touch with nearby members. You would be helping your Commissioners stay in touch with CD members & help to nurture their interest in Clan Donald. If you are interested and/or want more information, please call, email, or write to Mary Anne Wolfson.

CONVENERS NEEDED

Northeast Scottish Festival 25 February 2017

The Jacksonville Games, as always, were a tremen-dous success. The weather was beautiful. The Games Committee did an outstanding job in the preparations. An increased number of diversified venders were present, a full complement of athletes participates, and various entertainers were on hand throughout the day, keeping the interests of those visiting at a high. And to top this, 67 clans were present with the music of approximately 150 pipers and drummers. The Clan Donald tent, thanks to our North Florida conveners Randy Thurston and his K-P service dog ‘Louie’ and several Clan Donald members traveling from Milton, FL and Savannah, GA assisted between 100 and 200 visitors to the tent, including many other Clan Don-ald members. Eight members marched in the Parade of Tartans led by Randy Thurston. By the end of the day, six new members were signed up and one member re-newed. It was a super event and a good time was had by all. Close to 20,000 people attended the festivities.

Panama City Games 4 March 2017

Panama City Games has evolved and has grown over the past three years mainly due to the new venue. There are many more clans and venders and more room for the athletes and entertainers. The approximate attendance approached 6,000. Clan Donald was one of 18 Clans participating and the tent remained busy throughout the day with a host of visitors. Again, Randy and ‘Louie’ did an outstanding job of setting up our tent and meeting/greeting our visitors. Two new members were added and many took applica-tions home for future action. Twelve members marched in the Parade of Tartans.
