Introduction to Clad MetalsClad Metal can be defined as the combination of two or more metals metallurgically bonded under high pressure, resulting ina substance with physical and electrical properties not available in a single metal or alloy. According to the types of bondingand materials, CSC’s specialty clad metals are divided into inlay clad, overlay clad, solder clad, contact tape clad and variouscombinations thereof.

The Advantages of Clad MetalsOne of the greatest advantages of clad metals is the reduced material and fabrication cost.

In addition, customers can expect advanced properties not found in a single metal or alloy including lower porosity, betterformability, design flexibility, and superior quality compared to normal plating products in many applications.

CLAD METALS MANUFACTURING PROCESSES

Clad Metals ::: 04

1_Preparation Precious metals and base metalsare thoroughly cleaned to removecontaminants on the surfaces andthen brushed to get betterbonding quality.

5_SlittingAfter rolling clad metals to therequired widths, they are slitaccording to the dimensionsrequired by our customers.

2_BondingTwo or more metals are placedtogether and cold-rolled underextremely high pressure by aspecially designed bonding mill. Thisprocess makes a high metallurgicalstrength at the atomic level possiblein finished clad metal products.

6_LevelingClad metals are leveled andstraightened using tensionlevelers.

3_AnnealingTo ensure full bonding strengthand to relieve any residual stressduring the bonding operation,bonded clad metals are heat-treated.

7_Inspection Mechanical properties of cladmetals including hardness, tensilestrength, and elongation aretested before shipment. Otherspecifications are also thoroughlyinspected.

4_RollingThe finished clad metals areproduced by cold-rolling andannealing. In this process,keeping the correct proportion ofprecious metals to base metals isvery important.

ELECTROPLATINGElectro plating uses a reel to reel method that guarantees consecutive production at ahigh speed based on the specifications of our customers.

The advantages of this method include good productivity and a high yield, resulting incost-efficiency especially in mass production.

Partial plating on the metals using masking tape is also possible. Ag, Au, Sn, Ni, Pd arenormally used as plating metals and Ni, Cu are used as base metals.

Inlay clad metals are produced by a morereliable process compared to the normal platingprocess.This is cost-effective because it controls theprecise positions and dimensions ofprecious metals on the base metals.

APPLICATIONSParts for micro motors, automotive parts, homeappliances, switches, connectors etc.

INLAY CLADS

Overlay clad metals are defined as acombination of two or more metals of the samesize. One-sided and two-sided cladding isavailable at competitive prices. Overlay cladmetals are mostly used for tact switches, domeswitches, volume switches, and their terminals.

APPLICATIONSTact switches, dome switches, volume switches,slide switches, terminals etc.

OVERLAY CLADS

Contact tapes require smaller amounts ofprecious metals than inlay or overlay cladmetals. They are good alternatives for rivets,buttons and wire welds for switches, contacts,and relays. Contact tapes also exhibit good adaptability in processes of speedy stampingand welding operations.
