The Challenge

CKE Restaurants, Inc. owns, operates and franchises some of the most popular brands in the quick-service restaurant industry, including the Carl’s Jr., Hardee’s, Green Burrito and Red Burrito. The CKE system includes more than 3,480 restaurant locations in 42 states and in 31 countries, and they are continuing to rapidly expand. CKE processes a large percentage of their point of sale (PoS) transactions using electronic methods of payment. As a restaurant chain powerhouse, CKE is expected to handle and protect customer data with the utmost diligence.

“Customers and employees entrust personally identifiable information with us under the assumption that CKE has the most advanced security measures in place and their information is safe,” said Tom Lindblom, Chief Technology Officer of CKE. “When data began to surface revealing the prevalence of advanced malware targeting PoS systems, and the inability for traditional antivirus to defend against these sophisticated threats, we knew we had to act quickly to update our security toolset.”

The Solution

CKE began researching advanced malware protection solutions that could monitor both web and email vectors and compliment existing security tools in place. They ultimately chose Lastline because of its superior detection capabilities and ability to easily scale.

• Effortless Scalability CKE reviewed both network-based and endpoint-based solutions. The administration of an endpoint-based tool proved particularly problematic in CKE’s highly-distributed environment. Having many different systems dispersed throughout thousands of locations would have been extremely difficult to implement and manage. CKE needed a solution that was cloud-based or could run in a highly-virtualized environment. Lastline’s software-based solution allowed for easy implementation and scaling to protect CKE’s entire network against advanced threats including malware attempting to infiltrate their systems through Point of Sale machines.

• Lowest False Positive Rate CKE evaluated Lastline along with other network-based security vendor products in order to determine effectiveness in their environment and rate of false positives. Lastline’s full-system emulation sandbox outperformed the competition. By simulating the physical hardware (including CPU and memory), full-system emulation provided the deepest level of visibility into malware behavior, and was also the hardest for advanced malware to evade.
