CIVITAS 2 / 12 WORKSHOP ON SOFT MOBILITY

SOFT MOBILITY: IDEA FOR THE FUTURE Soft mobility represents a political concept promoting walking, cycling and the usage of public transport as forms of sustainable, eco-friendly, socially acceptable and safe means of transport. Soft mobility provides improvements for inhabitants, the environment and transport safety. This requires regulatory measures that limit motorised traffic to a necessary level and prevent car trips manageable with “soft” possibilities. This workshop will equip you with a thorough understanding of soft mobility as a cost-efficient method to promote sustainable urban transport. Participants should be ready and willing to examine local challenges from other participants and to contribute to group discussion and interactive exercise sessions. The workshop aims to share best-practices and to provide participants with the necessary theory and real-life examples that will address knowledge gaps and enhance relevant skills. The city of Graz and CIVITAS CATALIST (6th RTD Framework Programme), supported by PIMMS transfer (INTERREG IVC), City Network Graz-Maribor (European Territorial Cooperation), ELTIS (Intelligent Energy Europe) and SEE-MMS (Transnational European Programme) is organising this workshop to support cities interested in sustainable transport solutions. You are invited to the workshop from 09 – 10 February 2011 in Graz, Austria, which will include a blend of theory, practical tools and exercises designed to provide you with new ideas and solutions that you can apply to your own initiatives.

PRACTICALITIES

A splendid clock tower, Graz’s emblem, keeps watch from the tree-clothed Schlossberg hill that’s crowned by 16th-century ramparts. In the valley below, the River Mur flows quickly along its stony bed. Between the two lies an Old Town of immense charm. Church towers punctuate red roofs, narrow streets, winding alleys, grand squares and hidden courtyards. The architecture is a pleasing mix of prettily painted buildings in marzipan colours, fancy gables, ornate palaces, Gothic windows and Baroque façades.
