Eurovia: Overview


The Eurovia Group, formerly known as the Ringway Group, is a national civil engineering contracting company undertaking highway construction and maintenance. A market leader in its sector, Eurovia also manufacturers highway related products and, through Eurovia SA, is a member of the international Vinci Group. Vinci is the world leader in construction and associated services whose projects have included the 2nd Severn Crossing and the Stad de France.

EuroviaoperatesviaspecialistsubsidiarycompaniesfrommultipleofficesanddepotslocatedthroughouttheUK.TheGroupHeadOfficeissituatedinHorsham,WestSussex.Commercial and technical experience can be developed in any of these locations, covering a variety of disciplines. The choice of location is subject to mutual agreement and can be nearhomeoruniversityifyouwish.

Our Graduate Training Programme (GDP), which is linked to an ICE approved training scheme, aims to provide all-round experience to undergraduates/graduates. For example, one of our trainees spent time gaining experience of highway construction and maintenance in both rural and urban environments before undertaking a secondment with Jacobs, where she gained valuable design experience. Following a period in our Commercial department she became an Incorporated Engineer and a year later, after acting as a site agent on a £2million project, a Chartered Engineer.

Design experience is available through our Joint Venture companies, Ringway Jacobs and BEAR Scotland. All graduates on the ICETrainingSchemewillbenefitfromthisexchange.

The company ethos is to give the trainee responsibilityfordefinedelementsofwork with the advice and support of their mentor.Withestimatingexperience,forexample, when preparing a small tender the trainee would be responsible for taking off quantities,calculatingapriceandpresentinga report to the tender settlement meeting.

Over thirty years of delivery



Companies are only as good as the staff they employ and Eurovia is keen to attract and employ the best. It is, therefore, prepared to pay above market rates in its questforfutureproject/seniormanagers.The ‘Fast Track’ Graduate Training Scheme has been established for this purpose.

Eurovia would expect undergraduates and graduates participating in the training scheme to be well presented and articulate, self-motivated, creative and organised. They should be prepared to work alone and as part of a team.

In order to take full advantage of the opportunities for advancement provided and to be successful in the civil engineering industry, scholars should be ambitious and enthusiastic with the ability to pass on this enthusiasm to others. They should be hard working, innovative, ready to make decisions and to accept responsibility for those decisions.

Graduate engineers will be provided with a fully expensed vehicle and fuel card.

Synopsis of Training so Far:

I decided very early in my academic career that I wanted to work with a contracting company and, after having completed a double degree at the Universities of Nottingham Trent and Dresden, I applied to Eurovia having been attracted by the company’s Graduate Development Programme.

I joined the Eurovia Group in January 2004 and commenced work on the £1.6 million Edenbridge Bypass project. I was given increasing levels of responsibility and, after about 6 months, I was made Section Engineer with full responsibility for part of the works. I then transferred to the company’s Transport for London (TfL )contract where I managed six small projects in the capital. After a secondment to Jacobs, where I gained valuable design experience, I transferred to the Commercial Team where I assisted with the preparation of a bid for a 25-year PFI contract.

I became an Incorporated Engineer with the ICE in 2006 before being appointed Site Agent on a £2 million construction project in Kent. Upon completion of the Graduate Development Programme, I was appointed a Contracts Manager for the company within London and became a Chartered Engineer in May 2008.

Since becoming Chartered, I have undertaken a number of senior roles within the company including the supervision of construction of a radar base and tower at Cardiff Airport and as Senior Engineer – responsible for four Section Engineers and specialist sub-contractors – for a major bridge repair scheme before being appointed Senior Site Agent fora£10millionprojectlocatedontheoutskirtsofSheffield.

During a relatively short time with Eurovia I have had a considerable amount of training, both on and off the job, as well as a broad spectrum of experience and a high degree of responsibility.

After graduating from University, I joined the Eurovia Group on their Fast Track Graduate Development Programme. Over the next four years Eurovia, due to their size and diverse operations, gave me a comprehensive foundation in road construction and maintenance and the opportunity to carry out design works for highways and structures.

This thorough and demanding graduate training scheme helped me to become a CharteredEngineer,andgavemetheexperience,abilityandconfidencetobepromotedto my current position as Contracts Manager responsible for 4000 km of highways with a turnover of £5 million.

Myteamconsistsoffourengineers,supportstaff,andadirectworkforceoffiftymenwhich is often supplemented by labour-only and specialist subcontractors.

I report to the Operations Manager who is responsible for all operations for the Region, and I am an active member of his management team.

My responsibilities include:

• Liaising with the Client’s Area Manager• Minor maintenance and construction schemes• Preparing estimates and tenders for the work undertaken• Programming and planning the works programme• Allocating appropriate resources to the works• Managing Health & Safety, Quality and Environmental issues in my area• Measurement of works and submission of invoices to the Client• Negotiatingandsettlingfinalaccounts• Debt control• WinterandEmergencyResponse• Husbandryofplantandequipmenttothevalueof£900,000• Recognising and taking advantage of the business opportunities in my area.

My aim is to be an Operations Manager, reporting to the Area Director, within the next fiveyears.
