welcome to the great acceleration.
homo urbanis.
what’s a city?
our metaphors define our world view -
and therefore the solutions we seek.
the city is a big village.
the city is a machine.

the city is neighborhoods.

the city is a platform.
the city is an ecosystem.
the city is people.
the city is a nation-state.
the city is an innovation space.
the city is resilient.
the city is recombinant.
in fact, all of these are “true.”
typically, though, we break a city downinto its functions.
economic (commerce, infrastructure, transportation)
social (housing, health, education, recreation, religion)
political (security, stability, equality)

what would be neededto have an exponential city?
back in the early 2000’s, we hoped for a worldthat could “accelerate the flow of capital to good.”
we envisioned a half-dozen elementsthat could help create such conditions.
better entrepreneurs.new corporate forms.more patient capital.
“poster-child” scaled businesses.decisions driven by data.
public/private partnerships.
we went about bringing a “coalition of the willing”Into a big tent, to bridge across silos.
we didn’t claim any credit for these changes.but we tried to help create the conditions
In which they could occur.

continuous equitable distributionlong & short-term planning
we have the technology and the willing.
we just need to get busy.
houston, we have some solutions.
lots of solutions.
this isn’t rocket science.
but it is citizen science.
