There was no one who left a greater mark on the modern identity of Ljubljana than Jože Plečnik, a brilliant architect with a fantastic moustache. He had a vision for his city that he was determined to realise, modelling it on ancient Athens. Among his many great works are the iconic Triple Bridge, the National and University Library, as well as the em- bankments along the Ljubljanica River and the Ljubljana market. A BEER LOVER S EXPERIENCE OF LJUBLJANA Ljubljana has a very long tra- dition of brewing, proof of which are 3,900-year-old beer barrels excavated at the Ljubljana Marshes. Recent years have seen a rapid growth in the pop- ularity of craft beers made by differ- ent microbreweries in Ljubljana and its surrounding area. During the tour, you will visit different drink outlets, including a pub, where you will taste seven different beers made by five different breweries, two based in Lju- bljana and three in other parts of the Central Slovenia region. You will also visit the Brewery Museum, set up by the Pivovarna Union brewery, where the popular Union beer has been brewed since 1864. EXPLORING LJUBLJANA BY BICYCLE Your tour will begin in the city centre and continue along a circular route around the city centre perime- ter,introducing you to all the city’s ma- jor sights along the way. You will pedal along the river Ljubljanica all the way to the Ljubljana Botanic Garden, take a garden tour, and continue through the famous vegetable gardens of Kra- kovo towards Tivoli Park to enjoy a rest and a picnic snack there. On the last leg of the tour, you will visit the Metelkova mesto: the famous alternative culture centre.

Yes, cartography is a job. Street maps are not a literal represen-tation of reality, they render the city in a symbolic way. Cartography only works when it’s communicative, and it’s only communicative when it’s silent. This workshop highlights basic elements of

cartography for dummies: line width, text size, use of fonts and colour. It’s not a software course, but an attempt to show differences in map styles. This way you become aware of the different ingredients and may finetune them in your future editions.

Paper has two sides. So what do you put on the front, and what on the back? Most of you follow the same basic formula: zooming in on your city on the frontside and zooming out on the back-side. But there are other options too.

For some cities, north versus south works better, or centre versus neigh-bourhoods, or day versus night. Stijn will show examples from the past and the present, so you might consider oth-er solutions for the future.

Have you noticed that your posts on your personal Facebook or In-stagram get more interaction than the ones you make for your USE-IT? That’s probably because they mattered more to you as well. If social media is only work, it’s not going to work. You’re all volunteers and don’t have shitloads of

spare time. That’s why you have to try and make it rewarding for yourself too, or look for the right people who can take over. Arne and Rik might have some advice. In preparation, they ask to send two examples from your ownUSE-IT Facebook page or Instagram: one big hit and one big miss.

A good USE-IT map is like the local friend you didn’t have. So when you write, try to sound like a person speaking instead of like a brochure. Easy to say! But how do you do this? How do you keep those damn little

texts spontaneous and appealing, yet still easy to understand? We’d say more, but we prefer to keep it simple and clear - another feature of USE-IT texts we’ll tackle at the workshop.

How do you distribute your maps? Hostels and tourist infos some-times put them between tons of f lyers, and then they don’t get noticed. Sav-vas will present models in wood and plexi for USE-IT dispensers, including

a how-to guide for making them your-selves. Other USE-ITs are also invited to show which other no-budget mate-rials they have created before — apart from maps — to inspire others.
