City vs. Country Living

Urban vs. rural living is a debate that will probably take more than a blog post to settle, but I’ll do my best to try and lay out the sides for each, maybe just to settle the blog vs. speech debate once and for all.

We’ll start with the concrete jungle.

Paying for gas is expensive. Like really expensive. Burning through your wallet faster than gasoline burns through your car is probably not how you’d like to spend your paychecks. Living in the city alleviates a ton of that hassle because walking is a huge culture of bigger towns and public transport is a thing. You won’t have to drive anywhere (usually) - there’s a bus for that. Plus, walking is healthy. Numerous studies have proven that bigger cities have healthier residents on average than their country counterparts. In addition, contrary to what Hollywood may have you believe, the chances that

you will die from a gunshot wound or get into a car wreck are greater in rural areas.

Cities are filled with diversity, from the people that inhabit its walls to the activities being performed everyday. The cultural diversity factor is something that attracts many people, but turns away a few too. From my experience, learning how to tolerate different ideas, cultures and values is something that makes this country great. It’s hard to do that in the country. Unfortunately, cities are home to ridiculous amounts of inequality, but hey, there’s always some bad where there’s good. Cities also have a ton of really cool activities that happen from day to day. There might be concert festivals, museums, food attractions and libraries- to name just a few. The world is your sometimes-edible oyster- treat it as such.

Now for the country.

One of the biggest selling points for country living is how cheap it really is. The biggest factor that usually persuades people to drive a few hours to and from work everyday is the cost of living. Instead of trying to figure out whether you want the 2 million dollar 4 by 4 closet in New York City or the multi million dollar vintage estate that George Clooney urinates in, it always comes down to picking the less bad one. In the country, it is quite conceivable to own a home for under $200,000. With a pool too! Plus, small town movie tickets are cheap too.

In terms of human interaction, cities tend to be filled with humanoids whereas rural living highlights a real sense of intimacy. People know each other by first name and greet you with a warm handshake. It’s a nice change of pace from the high intensity, cut throat environment that is the city.
