The Benefits of City MultiUsing Mitsubishi Electric’s unique Branch Controller (BC), the City Multi heat recovery system only requires 2 refrigerant pipes throughoutthe entire VRF system to deliver simultaneousheating and cooling with heat recovery.
The technology lies in the BC, which houses a liquid/gas separator, allowing the outdoor unit to deliver a mixture (two-phase) of hot gas for heating and liquid for cooling, all through the same pipe. When this mixture arrives at the BC, it is separated and the correct phase delivered toeach indoor unit depending on the individual requirement of either heating or cooling. Recovered energy is returned to the BC and re-distributed where required. Traditional three-pipe systems need a separate pipe for each of the refrigerant phases.

The temperate UK climate often demands close control of capacity, both sensible and latent as well as off coil temperature. City Multi YLM offers two optional solutions to improve comfort delivered into the building:
1. Automated dynamic control of refrigerant evaporating temperature based on internal load, provides added comfort whilst improving seasonal efficiency by 8%.

2. Increase and fix system evaporating temperatureto enable increased indoor unit SHF, air off temperature conditions and therefore efficiency and comfort.
Improved comfort during defrost Defrost is an integral part of a heat pump running cycle during winter. The effect can be easily managedwith good design and control, for example ensuring the equipment is sized at a low ambient condition,setback temperature control is used and the grille design is considered.
To improve the defrost design even further, YLM offers the choice to either provide standard reverse defrost or can continue to provide indoor units heat during the defrost cycle by utilising hot gas defrost technology. Available on all YLM models, heat pump and heat recovery in single and multiple modules.

Zubadan - full capacity down to -15ºCCity Multi Zubadan heat pumps (available from 22-56kW)achieve an excellent heating performance even when theoutdoor air temperature is as low as -25ºC, with full heatingcapacity at an outdoor temperature of -15°C.
The technology, which uses a flash injection circuit, ensuresreduced defrost frequency and time and a very quick deliveryof heating on start-up ensuring optimal comfort to occupants.
Heat pump air curtains Providing a solution to allow open door trading in retail or for hotel and leisure outlets, VRF heat pump air curtains can provide significant energy savings compared to conventional systems such as direct electric heatingor low, medium or high pressure hot water.
Easy to install with low noise levels, the units can be used with heat recovery systems to optimise waste heat. Availablein recessed or exposed, 1m, 1.5m or 2m variants.
Sanitary hot water Mitsubishi Electric’s hot water generation unit can be added to a heat recovery VRF system to utilise waste heat.
The system upgrades the waste heat to provide sanitary hot water up to 70ºC for bathrooms, showers or kitchens.

Close control coolingSpecially designed high sensible cooling solution, the PFD inverter driven system offers high efficiency with close control of temperature to ±1°C.
Recovering quickly after power failure and offering inbuilt back up and rotate functionality, the down flow floor standing system is available to connect to both air or water cooled VRF heat pump systems in 28 or 56kW.
Refrigerant detection systemsAnswering demands from EN378 refrigerant safety and BREEAM building environmental assessment, the high specification refrigerant detection systems supply a total refrigerant detection package.

The system is controlled with the Melcotel control interface which has helped to monitor and reduce energy consumption, CO2 emissions and running costs. A Mini M2M interface was also installed to monitor the energy consumption and the Melcotel settings.
The highly efficient City Multi heat recovery system can integrate with both hotel room key cards and individual window sensors to ensure that rooms are not using energy when they are unoccupied. Stylishyet simple to use room controllers are used to fit in with the décor of the room whilst allowing guests tocontrol their own comfort.
The ability to phase installation and complete flexibility of design reduces hotel downtime, allowing work tobe completed with minimum disruption to guests. The Premier Inn Hotel, Leicester has installed a high efficiency heat recovery CityMulti VRF air conditioning system to provide heating and cooling to all of the 135bedrooms as well as the bar, restaurant and back offices.
The modernisation of Monza House in Southampton included the installation of the pioneering City MultiHVRF system which now means that the offices are simultaneously heated and cooled without using refrigerant in occupied spaces. HVRF uses water to replace the majority of the internal refrigerant used in traditional VRF systems which removes the need for leak detection equipment and allows more properties to benefit from the flexibility of both design and operation that VRF can bring.
The system is still able to deliver simultaneous heating and cooling in a simplified two-pipe design but between the HBC box and the indoor fan coils, the air conditioning uses water piping and still offers highsensible cooling and stable room temperatures for maximum comfort. HVRF has other significant key benefits which open its use up to many other buildings. Having no refrigerant in occupied spaces whilstdelivering simultaneous heating and cooling via quiet fan coils means HVRF is particularly suited to applications such as modern offices, hotels and high end residential situations.
When Working Environments was looking to amalgamate three different office locations into one, the company wanted to provide a modern, comfortable environmentfor staff and customers and turn the interior of the building into a ‘Centre of Excellence’.
Modern offices and commercial buildings need air conditioning systems that providethe highest levels of comfort and freshness, as energy efficiently as possible.
The ideal system will incorporate easy to use controls that end users are comfortable with, and allow forfully programmable scheduling that accommodates flexible working patterns.
Legislation is also seeking to limit or restrict the use of refrigerants in occupied spaces. What is needed isa system that delivers the fresher and more balanced internal air temperatures needed combined with theadvanced efficiency of modern air conditioning, City Multi answers that need.

Retail and Leisure facilities require systems that operate as efficiently as possible,providing customer comfort that maximises energy and cost saving potential. Retailers with multiple sites also need to be able to monitor building services from one central location or remotely, to maintain efficiency and control.
Heat recovery and effective controls are essential for small and large leisure applications: cooling is requiredall year around in the gym, whereas heating is required in changing and reception areas. It is therefore keyto control the heat recovery air conditioning system properly to ensure maximum energy savings.

The old heating system was made up of an assortment of equipment including electrical and oil-fuelledheaters, which were extremely inefficient and costly to run and left some areas of the store cold whilstover-heating others. The ideal replacement proved to be the combination of a PWFY hot water generation unit running off City Multi VRF heat recovery air conditioning.
The PWFY unit sits in the store’s plant room in place of the old oil boiler and is linked to both the air conditioningand the hot water cylinder. The unit uses excess heat from the VRF system and transfers it to the hotwater supply. Space-saving City Multi units have been fitted outside the building which link to indoor ceiling cassettes in the store to ensure an even and pleasant temperature throughout.
Before installing the new system the Dagenham store was using 306,989kWh of energy a year at a costof £33,769, plus a further £3.5K spend on oil. The new system uses just 267,677kWh per annum at acost of £29,444, which means The Co-operative is using 39,312 kWh less energy providing them with a saving of £7,824 over previous bills.
The refurbishment of the heating and cooling system at the Co-operative’s foodstore in Dagenham has allowed the company to improve comfort levels whilst reducing energy consumption and emissions.
As we look for ways to balance population growth in crowded city centres, moremixed use properties are being developed, often combining retail, office, leisure andliving spaces in the same building.
This offers a tremendous opportunity for energy saving across the development and the flexibility and outstanding performance of the City Multi range allows heat to be transferred across a community to reduce overall consumption and lower emissions.

The development has prompted the Department of Energy & Climate Change (DECC) to research andpublish a national water source heat map, which points to significant opportunities for open water heatpump installations across the country.
The £70 million mixed-use development at Kingston Heights is getting the energy for its hot water, heatingand cooling directly from the River Thames. The development has been created by NHP Leisure Developmentson the site of a former power station right in the heart of Kingston upon Thames, and 200 metres from thebanks of the river. The 137 apartments and a 142-bedroom hotel, all benefit from the cutting-edge heat pumpsystem that harvests naturally stored energy in the river. The community heating scheme takes renewableheat from the sun, stored in the river water and boosts it to the temperature required for the underfloorheating and hot water needed by residents - as well as delivering the air conditioning required by the hotel.
When the new hotel, with meeting, banqueting and conference facilities, is completed at the end of 2014,this will increase the efficiency of the heating scheme further still as it will derive all its heating and hotwater, as well as its cooling, from the open water heat pump installation. Heat recovered from coolingthe individual hotel rooms will also be reclaimed and returned to the community system to support the heating and hot water demand for the whole site.
A mixed use development in the heart of Kingston upon Thames has highlightedthe potential of open water sources as a renewable energy source that can be readily replicated in many of our major towns and cities.
