Sellafield is the Cumbrian-based company that is responsible for safe decommissioning, reprocessing and waste management on behalf of the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority.

Sellafield employs over 10,000 people at the facility – more than half the UK’s total nuclear workforce – making it Cumbria’s biggest private employer. The west Cumbria site is the largest nuclear site in Europe, covering some six km², and there are more than 1000 separate civil nuclear facilities located there – the most diverse portfolio of any single nuclear location in the world.

Since Gen2 was established in 2000, it has delivered over 900 apprenticeships for Sellafield. The range of courses encompasses several nuclear specialisms, as well as the more traditional electrical, mechanical and engineering trades.

By 2017/18, almost 8000 training courses had been undertaken by Sellafield personnel.

Gen2 also provides a range of specialist advanced nuclear training schemes. These include the Technical Specialist Trainee Scheme, Level 5 and 6 degrees in Plant Engineering for Nuclear Technology, Level 6 Radiation Protection and a Level 7 Postgraduate Certificate in Nuclear Technology.

Gen2 joined the City & Guilds Group in 2017 and is the first Institute of Advanced Technology specialising in Technical Training.

The effectiveness of this solution was also recognised with a Brandon Hall Bronze Award for Best Blended Program 2014.

Making skills visible

Spotlight

In June 2016, the City & Guilds Group agreed the acquisition of Makewaves and its sister business Digitalme – a not-for-profit organisation – to join the Group. The new digital credentials brand is known solely as Digitalme. Founded in 2003, Digitalme works with employers and training providers to design digital credentials that recognise individuals’ competencies, and support employers in finding talent for their businesses. The digital credentials are built on Open Badge technology, which is fast becoming the global standard for capturing and communicating skills across the web.

The growth of the Open Badge movement has been influenced by an increased awareness that learning happens everywhere, both within and outside formal education, on and offline. Open Badges offer a way to validate this learning and translate it into a valuable currency to support learners to unlock opportunities in education and employment.

Now, more than ever it is vital we can respond in real time to the changing needs of industry and keep pace with employer demands. Digitalme joining the Group allows us to create a new, technology-led credentialing service, to further extend our offer to all clients. This is a natural step for the Group, not only because the adoption of digital credentialing is growing significantly worldwide, but our strong brands and complementary values put us in a unique position to influence skills development together in the fast–changing world of work.

Recognising international culinary skills with Worldchefs

Worldchefs teamed up with City & Guilds and Digitalme to launch a new digital tool allowing professional chefs to gain certification whilst ‘on the job’.

The Global Culinary Certification programme allows participants to be fully recognised for their existing skills gained while working in the industry.

The globally-recognised certifications range from the Certified Professional Cook (Commis Chef), requiring three years’ professional experience in cooking or baking, to the Certified Master Chef title, suitable for chefs

with a minimum of ten years’ professional cooking who also hold the role of executive chef or equivalent. Medium-level qualifications include the Certified Pastry Chef, suitable for a pastry chef or baker with at least seven years’ professional experience.

Chefs taking part in the courses can showcase their skills online, so they do not have to travel or take time out of their day jobs to complete them. Graduates receive sharable digital badges developed by Digitalme that they can use on social media and job sites, advertising the qualification to employers and colleagues.

New Venture Fund A £2.5 million New Venture Fund was created in 2016 to accelerate the growth of innovative education and training. Initial investments include Credly – a US-based digital credentialing services provider, Filtered (see page 18) and GetMyFirstJob – the UK’s leading apprenticeship matching service. Subsequent investments include EmpowerTheUser – an award-winning platform that provides simulations at scale for work-based assessment and training and HT2 Labs – a research and development company for workplace digital learning products that help make learning more personal, more social and more measurable.

We work in partnership with governments, employers and learning providers to develop and deliver services to meet specific skills needs.

Apprenticeships Apprenticeships have always been a key part of what we do and we are at the forefront of UK apprenticeship reforms. City & Guilds is working with two-thirds of the trailblazer groups to develop new apprenticeship standards and are one of the leading end-point assessment organisations. ILM offers management apprenticeships which focus on developing practical leadership skills through a combination of on-the-job and theory-based training. Through our Industry Skills Board (ISB), we work closely with employers to demonstrate the value of apprenticeships and to make sure we are meeting their requirements and maintaining our quality standards.

We are currently advising the US government on apprenticeships provision.

Filtered: a New Venture Fund investment

Filtered – a London-based online training company – provides an online platform that personalises learning material for each user. By asking questions at the outset, the platform filters out learning material users don’t need or already know. This reduces the time spent training and maximises the value of that time. In addition to funding, Filtered will draw on the City & Guilds Group’s expertise and resources. In return, the Group will have an equity stake in the business.

Filtered’s range of courses are tailored to each individual and give users the chance to learn essential business skills (such as communication, leadership and project management), Microsoft Office and business analysis. Filtered has grown quickly since 2009, serving 700,000 consumers and a growing list of multinationals including EE, Regus and New Look.

We invest more than £2 million each year to support a wide range of organisations and individuals, as well as recognising and celebrating excellence and professional achievement.

Rewarding and encouraging excellence

Prince Philip Medal Throughout our 140 year history we have really valued the support of our royal Presidents. During his 60 years as President, HRH The Duke of Edinburgh, played an active part in the life of the Institute including establishing the Prince Philip Medal, an award that recognises those who have achieved pre-eminence having ‘travelled The City and Guilds [of London Institute’s] path’.

HRH, The Duke of Edinburgh (President of the Institute from 1951 until 2011).

FellowshipThe City & Guilds Group benefits from a supportive community of Fellows who are appointed by Council. They represent individuals who have made a significant contribution to skills development and risen to the highest level of achievement in their respective careers. This community provides us with access to the most influential and engaged members of wider society.

Princess Royal Training Awards Our current President, HRH The Princess Royal, is also an active supporter of the work of the City & Guilds Group, and we have established the Princess Royal Training Awards to recognise the measurable impact training has on organisations and their people. So far, over 70 employers have achieved the required standard of excellence, ranging from Barclays Bank and Jaguar Land Rover, to Macmillan Caring Locally and the Coventry Building Society.

A key aspect of the Awards is sharing best practice and building a community of employers committed to excellence in staff training and development.

Building better futures Youth engagement is a key area of activity for us. We offer internships and an accredited work experience programme, aimed at helping 14–25 year olds who have less access to professional networks and career opportunities.

Apprentice Connect Developed from an idea put forward by our own apprentices, Apprentice Connect reaches out to young people in schools and colleges through a network of trained apprentices. This peer-to-peer initiative has engaged with over 45,000 young people, and provided free communications skills training for apprentices from a range of organisations.

BursariesNot every individual is able to afford to develop their skills and become financially independent. Through the City & Guilds Group bursary programme, we support hundreds of people to achieve their ambitions. For Kathryn, becoming a veterinary nurse was a far-off dream. Her bursary

meant she could turn her back on long hours of low pay and concentrate on developing the skills she needed to begin her ideal career.

Skills Development Fund In addition to our ongoing charitable programmes, we also work with a range of organisations who share our values and commitment to skills development and the impact it has on people’s lives. Our Skills Development Fund allows us to work not just in the UK but across a number of countries where access to skills can be limited and limiting. So far, we have committed over £1.2 million to nine projects.

For example, in Jordan, our partnership with The Near East Foundation has touched the lives of over 1000 refugees with almost 400 receiving support and expertise to set up micro-businesses. This has provided them with that crucial first step onto the skills ladder that will make them independent.

In the UK, St Giles Trust has been able to train a cohort of peer advisors working with prisoners to support them into employment and reduce the risk of them reoffending.

Training colleagues to become digitally savvy

Barclays achieved a Princess Royal Training Award in 2017 for its Digital Wings programme.

In 2014, with the dramatic rise of digital technology, it became clear that banking needs were changing. More customers than ever before were requesting help with online banking, and local branch colleagues, at the time, were not equipped to provide that support.

Barclays UK made the bold commitment to support their colleagues to become the ‘most digitally savvy and inclusive workforce in the UK’ and make sure customers and communities were not ‘left behind’. Driven by a recognition that a knowledgeable and confident workforce would be better equipped to help educate and support their customers to do the same. As a first step, the Digital Eagles were born; local champions within Barclays tasked with becoming experts in all things digital. But, with 20,000 frontline

colleagues all needing some level of upskilling, it was clear that they needed a more sustainable method of training to reach all colleagues, so they created a programme called Digital Wings.

Digital Wings is an online learning course, teaching colleagues new competencies around digitisation and the internet. The training is constantly evaluated and updated to reflect changing skills needs. Most recently, this has meant the development of new modules on cyber security and coding.

Take up has been extensive and continues to grow. There are currently 18,000 Digital Eagles and 55,000 learners signed up to Digital Wings - just over a third of Barclays’ UK workforce.

The future of work and learning

We work with key partners to bring the right people together to share insights and knowledge that will make a positive impact on global skills development.

Recent research includes:

Learning Insights 2018

Learning Insights is Kineo’s annual pulse check on the workplace learning and development world. Based on insights gained from interviews with 30 L&D professionals and a further 200 online survey responses, the 2018 report focuses on personalisation and globalisation. Key findings

Technology continues to be an important concern: almost two thirds of respondents have introduced new technology for learning and development in the past year.

Amid market concerns that the learning management system is in decline, it remains an essential or very important part of the overall L&D strategy for most.

Learner power is key – we saw an increase in the number of businesses asking learners for their input into L&D strategy. There is a growing focus on how we can personalise development pathways and put the learner in the driving seat for their own learning.

Globalisation is creating challenges for L&D professionals whose remit is now further reaching than ever before. Technology makes global working easier but creates issues around cultural differences, localisation and access.

Addressing the leadership lag 2017 To inform its leadership manifesto, ILM surveyed 500 employers and 2000 employees in full and part time work across UK industry. The research led ILM to produce a five point manifesto urging businesses to stop taking a remedial approach and address the ‘leadership lag’ by planning ahead and focusing on the longer term, in order to boost success as the UK embarks on its post-Brexit journey.

Key findings Over half (53%) of employees will consider moving jobs unless their organisation changes – suggesting a considerable frustration with current leadership and business structures.

28% of UK workers feel they don’t have a trustworthy and inspirational leader – topping the list of what they lack most at work.

Nearly one in four (24%) say that leaders in their organisations make them feel stressed and only 23% would be very likely to recommend their company’s overall leadership.

Half (52%) of businesses surveyed ranked having inspirational leaders as the top HR focus.

Just 31% of HR professionals feel very confident about their organisation’s supply of leadership talent for the next three to five years.

Skills shortage nation 2016

City & Guilds polled 500 senior decision makers from large companies across the UK in December 2016 to gain a better understanding of their current recruitment challenges, their knowledge of the forthcoming apprenticeship changes and their thoughts about the likely impact on their businesses.

Key findings 87% of respondents struggle to recruit the staff they need.

A third (33%) of respondents who would be eligible to pay the apprenticeship levy, were not aware of its existence.

Almost a third (29%) of respondents stated that they find it hard to fill apprenticeship places.

59% of respondents said they intend to recruit apprentices in the coming year compared to 44% who intend to recruit graduates. But despite this, universities were noted as the most used routes for recruitment (46%), compared with only 9% who said that they recruited from schools and 22% from colleges.

47% of respondents felt that the levy was a great way to get employers to pay for training, 43% felt that it gave employers more control over the system and 34% felt that it would increase quality.

AfriKids: training empowers northern Ghana’s next generation

In Ghana’s rural Upper East region, one in five people live in extreme poverty. For a young adult growing up in this deprived area of the world, there are few promising opportunities.

UK-based child rights charity – AfriKids – is working to change this through skills training and education.Skills help people to secure their own livelihoods and provide them and their families with brighter futures that are free of poverty.

Through its Transforming Futures programme, AfriKids hopes to drive the development of the region’s economy by lifting young people out of poverty and into employment, to create opportunities for future generations that are not dependent on aid. With support from partners, they’re helping young people to develop skills in a number of different professions such as nursing, dressmaking, teaching, carpentry and welding.

The programme is working to achieve a sustainable funding model, recycling loans so future generations can receive the same valuable skills training.

‘ AfriKids is empowering the next generation in northern Ghana to lead their families and communities out of poverty and into a brighter future for everyone.’ Amy Parker, Chief Executive AfriKids.

Through its Skills Development Fund, the City & Guilds Group has granted AfriKids just over £63,000 to provide training loans and support to 20 young women in teaching and nursing.
