This past weekend, on Saturday evening, there were two events going on in our parishes! They

were both filled with opportunities for fellowship and

prayer. Valentine’s Dance—At Epiphany, Andrew and Diana James planned a Valentine’s Dance for everyone! It was a great celebration of love and friendship. The night began with a beautiful prayer—and continued with an amazing four course dinner, music, dancing, and plenty of laughter! Thank

you so much to Diana, Andrew, Priscilla Davis and all who helped, for all of the hard work, time and energy it took to prepare this beautiful evening. “Faith, hope, love abide, but the greatest of these is love.” ~Corinthians 13:13 Pack St. Pat’s—At St. Patrick’s Church in the Strip District, the church was literally PACKED for Prayer, Music and Adoration. There were people of all ages praying the Holy Stairs and Praising the Lord in the Blessed Sacrament upstairs! Three priests were available to hear confessions, which continued after Benediction. The tea and coffee shop, De Fer, in the Strip District, remained open beyond their normal business hours for fellowship afterward, and it

was standing room only! Thank you to the owners of De Fer and Merritt Donoghue for accommodating us after hours. De Fer was FILLED with Faith, Laughter & Love!

Becoming One ~Under the protection of the Merciful Jesus~

In last week’s bulletin, there was a detailed explanation of our upcoming parish merger. As we work together to become one parish, there are several events that can help us get to know one another, serve our community and pray for each other. The events are for all ages. Please come and introduce yourselves to each other! We need to always remember that God is with us as walk along this path together. “May the strength of God pilot us, may the Wisdom of God instruct us, may the Hand of God protect us, may the Word of God

direct us. Be always ours this day and for evermore. - St. Patrick”

AMERICAN HISTORY—THIS WEEK IN BLACK

HISTORY Daniel Alexander Payne (February 24, 1811 – November 2, 1893) was an American bishop, educator, college administrator and author. A major shaper of the African Methodist Episcopal Church (A.M.E.), Payne stressed education and preparation of ministers and introduced more order in the church, becoming its sixth bishop and serving for more than four decades (1852–1893) as well as becoming one of the founders of Wilberforce University in Ohio in 1856. In 1863 the AME Church bought the college and chose Payne to lead it; he became the first African-American president of a college in the United States and served in that position until 1877.

people who live, work, shop, go to school and who are homeless in the Downtown area is very important to us.

Through Mass and the Sacraments, the Red Door Program as well as the Walk-in Ministry, we are able to meet God’s children wherever they are.

Last week, as I was standing out on the sidewalk visiting with the dear people whom we serve at the Red Door, a gentleman approached me to express his sincere appreciation for having learned what he said is "the perfect prayer". He went on to explain that

sometimes his mind gets so jumbled with different thoughts, fears, temptations, and concerns, that he can easily forget what's most important. He can easily be swayed into following his own passions instead of God's desire for him. It's in these moments that he prays, "Jesus, I trust in you!" He says it's the perfect prayer, because immediately after praying it, everything becomes clear to him and peace fills his heart and mind replacing all fear and anxiety. He went on to say, "I'm grateful for the sandwiches, but I'm more grateful for the perfect prayer!" Jesus, I trust in you. Let this perfect prayer remain in our hearts and on our lips this day and always. Blessings and peace from the Red Door!

Friends of St. Benedict the Moor School- This year our school developed our very own House System! The Harry Potter books and film series popularized the “houses” that are a feature in many traditional schools in England. Within our house system, each student, faculty, and staff member belongs to one of four smaller groups called “houses.” We chose to name our houses after Black Catholic Saints. Our houses are:

St. Martin de Porres House (House color: red) St. Josephine Bakhita House (House color: green) St. Monica House (House color: purple) St. Moses the Black House (House color: black)

Throughout the school year, house members are invited to wear their house color on special school days and participate in various activities together. In the photos below, students are wearing their house colors and enjoying ice cream with their housemates at our Ice Cream Social. Students also learned about the lives of all house saints in their religion classes. We want our students to learn from the strong faith in action of these four saints and Saint Benedict the Moor. Seventh grade students are shown below drawing portraits of their House Saints in art class in the photos below. The House System gives students and teachers a chance to interact with other students and teachers with whom they would otherwise not see or know. It creates smaller communities within our school which contain opportunities for student leadership. Each student is proud to be in his or her house! We are looking forward to more fun this year with our houses! Your Principal, Lauren Rudy
