From the Editor I want to extend a special “Thank You” to all of our members who provided such great content and photos to make this issue so great! Looks like everyone was out having a great time now that the weather is cooling off a bit.

Porsche and local Race team Alex Job had a great showing at Petit LeMans at Road Atlanta, you can read about it on pages 18-20 and 27.

We have tons of events coming up. Be sure to check out the DE (page 11), Oktoberfest at Orlando Brew-ing (page 21), The Challenge Rally for Russel Home (page 15), and Oktoberfest BBQ and Concours (page 7).

And of course, the new 911 Carrera was unveiled, be sure to check it out on page 28-29.

As always, we would love an article and some picture of any special Porsche or car event you attend.

Board of Directors

In addition to our autocross dates, Daytona Club Race, the Florida Cit-rus Region DE, Cars and Breakfast, the Russell Home Rally, and our Holiday Party this fall, we had some new events that I hope you made plans to participate. We had a Kart Challenge sched-uled where drivers from the Florida Citrus Region competed against each other and we had a portion of Park Avenue reserved for our Porsches on Park Av-enue car show. Take a look at the calendar in the Spiel, check the details at our website, and stay tuned for our emails as the dates for these events approach and details continue to evolve. Mark those dates on your calendars now to make sure you don’t miss a chance to play with your fellow members and enjoy your Porsches the way they were meant to be enjoyed.

I again wish to thank the everyone who advertises in our Spiel for your continued support. I hope that your business is enhanced and that your experience has been positively impacted by your relationship with Florida Citrus Region. If there is anything that I can do to create something better for you, please let me know. Additionally, I ask all of our members to consid-er doing business with those who are supporting our Region by their advertisements and sponsorships. Please don’t forget to thank them as we rely on their continued support to be able to conduct the many activities we schedule.

I hope all of you are enjoying a healthy and prosperous year and I hope that you consider joining me and your fellow members at our upcoming events.

Steve Williamson - President - Citrus Region PCA

Are we ready for fall? I, for one, am looking forward to the season of Club Racing, DE’s, autocrosses, and college football. Not always in that sequence mind you, but this year may not be the “year of the Gators” that I have grown used to anticipating during the Tebow-Meyer era. So with my freshly earned third place autocross trophy from the Parade in Savannah, I am ready to play in some more temperate weather. Fall also means the return of some of our more for-tunate members from their summer homes away from the Florida heat. I will welcome them back, but please if you fall in this category, spare the rest of us the weather report that ordinarily accompanies news of your return.

Porsche on North ParkArticle by Steve Williamson, Photos by Travis Young

Our Porsches on Park opened to misting skies early in the morning of Sunday September 18. Thirty nine of our members with brightly shined Porsches were not detered by the threat of showers as we filled both sides of Park Avenue in the block south of Canton. Whenever we have a new type of event, I meet mem-bers for the first time which tells me that we have a membership with varied interests and that there are many ways to enjoy the passion of Porsche! Despite the threat of inclement weather, out came the polish-ing cloths and off went the bugs and rain drops, as Porsches on Park became an overwhelming success. Not only did we have a full field of varied cars, we also had a crowd of interested onlookers on north Park Avenue that at times had the Winter Park Concours feel and look! As the skies finally opened in the early afternoon, many of the spectators were sorry to see our party disband. If you participated in Porsches on Park, I hope you enjoyed it and will consider it again next year. This event could not have happened without the spon-

sorship and support of North Park Avenue merchants and especially Scott Heisler and his staff at The Orlan-do Watch Company. Door prizes and winner’s prizes were donated by the Doggie Door, Earth Inspired Liv-ing, Scott Laurent Wearable Art, Bistro on Park, Mara-vadi Salon, Spice and Tea Exchange, The Blue Door, Life Style Family Fitness, and Porsche of Orlando. Thanks to all of the merchants who sponsored this event and helped to make it a success! The Winner of the People’s Choice Award received a Luminox Navy Seal Watch and gift cards from the above merchants. The second and third place finish-ers received gift cards, hats and t-shirts. Congratula-tions go to: 1st Place Rick Appelquist 1982 911 Targa2nd Place Charles New 2012 Boxster3rd Place Tom Greene 1973 911 RSR

Cars and BreakfastArticle by Steve Williamson photos by George SheltonApproximately 30 Citrus Region members and their guests enjoyed the hospitality and fellowship at our September 17 Cars and Breakfast at Route 46 En-tertainment District. We had great food and great weather as we are now getting the first indication that fall is just around the corner. Unfortunately, in Central Florida that means that love bugs are prob-ably making the ultimate sacrifice on the front of our cars. I overheard the advice of some home remedies to prevent lasting damage, but probably nothing beats a good coat of wax and daily diligence. As always I want to thank the generosity of those who furnished the door prizes that were raffled to the group. Special thanks this time goes to Don at Route 46 for the gift certificates, the free memberships at Life Style Family Fitness from Tom, and Andrew at Porsche of Orlando for the new design shirts with the Citrus Region and PCA logos. Please thank these peo-

ple for their generosity and plan on doing business with them if you can. If you have not as yet attended one of our Cars and Breakfast, watch our schedule of upcoming events and set aside that date on your calendar. We always have some new (to us) cars to look at and lies to tell at these low key events. Enjoy the photos and I look forward to seeing you there!

High Performance Karting Article by Steve Williamson, Photos by Nilo Argudin

More than twenty Citrus Region members gathered at the Walt Disney World Speedway on Saturday Sep-tember 24 for our High Performance Karting Event hosted by Richard Petty Driving Experience. Our pri-or karting events have consisted of timed laps with bragging rights going to those with the quickest lap times. This event was different as it consisted of practice sessions, heat races and last chance races to qualify for a feature. The heat races and last chance race were double file standing starts. The feature was started with a double file rolling start complete with a pace car! Slightly organized mayhem! Having partici-pated in the attempt at these starts before, I fully an-ticipated karts three and four wide spreading tire bar-riers as everyone would attempt to gain spots at the start. Fortunately, it all got sorted with minor pushing and shoving. I will attribute that to the skill and expe-rience of our Citrus Region members who are used to these rolling starts! Congratulations go the Greg Barrows for winning the feature and a Rookie Driving Experience to drive a stock car later that afternoon. After the karting, many of us took to the Speedway for touring laps of the track and a photo session. Along

with Greg, several others took advantage of the dis-counted pricing offered by Richard Petty Driving Ex-perience to drive stock cars. The lure of the sound of those big V-8s is hard to ignore. More information was made available about the plans to build a road course at the Walt Disney World Speedway to accomodate an exotic car driving ex-perience. The news is that program will be available early in 2012. Thanks to Paul Jones for keeping us in the loop as I am looking forward to driving a Ferrari without the necessity of actually buying one! Judging by the high fives, smiles, and shouts, I am confident that everyone who participated had a great time. Richard Petty Driving Experience runs these same karting events twice a month on Wednesday nights for anyone who wants to compete. If you are interested in the Wednesday night events, call 800 237 3889 for availability. Thanks also to Paul for help-ing to organize this event and, of course, GT, Dan, Bil-ly, and Dustin for helping us have our fun.

2011 Petit Le Mans at Road AtlantaArticle and Photos by Scott NewmanThis year’s American Le Mans Series Petit Le Mans race was run with delightfully cool autumn weather at one of the best tracks in North America at Road Atlanta. By the time I knew that I would be able to attend, all the parking passes for the Porsche Corral had been reserved, so my first task when I arrived at the track was to try to find a safe spot for my Cayman. I was immediately reminded again that I wasn’t in Florida with some rather steep up-hill, down-dale roads in the infield.

The first thing to come into view as I crossed the bridge into the infield area was the Porscheplatz with an amazing array of different Porsches parked around the canopy. The Porscheplatz has a prime viewing lo-cation overlooking the downhill arrival to the corner

at the end of the back straight. The racers negotiate a sharp left corner, with a sweeping right-hand bend leading under the bridge, followed immediately by a steep descent to the right-hand sweeper on to the pit straight.

The field of race cars were parked on the pit straight before the start of the race with the race fans given the opportunity to view their favorite cars up close, and with many of the drivers also present. Sebastian Bourdais was in the cockpit of his Peugeot 908 for some last minute adjustments prior to the start.

At the start there was an immediate duel between the Audi R18 & Peugeot 908 turbo-diesels in an attempt to break away from the others. The diesel LMP1 rac-

ers were visibly quicker around the course than all the rest, but with the strange quiet turbo-diesel prog-ress that keeps them from producing the wonderful exhaust notes of the rest of the racers, including the Porsche & other GT cars in the field.

In the GT field, the Porsche GT3 RSRs of the Flying Lizard team battled with the BMW Rahal Team M3 GT cars as well as an extensive number of Ferrari 458 & 360 GT cars. This intense engagement continued throughout the race, with the AF Corse Ferrari 458 prevailing at the finish. The Porsche GT3 of Jorg Bergmeister and Patrick Long fought until the last lap with the Nr. 55 BMW, with the Flying Lizard Porsche taking second place in the GT class. In the LMP1 class, the pole-winning Peugeot of Se-bastian Bourdais came to a halt on the back straight, never to rejoin the race. The second Peugeot 908 driven by Sarrazin, Montagny, & Wurz came through to the win after both of the Team Joest Audi R18s fell to a series of mechanical problems and collisions with other racers.

Oktoberfest at Orlando BrewingSaturday, October 29, 2011, afternoonYour Citrus Region Porsche club will hold another event at Orlando Brewing on Saturday, October 29th beginning around 2pm. This year’s event will be si-multaneous with the release of the brewery’s Okto-berfest beer and will be full of German cars, German food and German beer!

Orlando Brewing is the only organic brewery in Flori-da. PCA affiliates George and Cindy Cain will be host-ing this event for the third year. Other car clubs are invited to make this an even bigger event! This year’s event is being held in October to avoid the 90 degree Florida weather in May we have experienced the past two years.

Staging will begin for cars at 1pm and will feature a people’s choice award and voting for all in atten-dance. A nominal car show entry fee will be charged

to benefit local charity organization First Harvest. Tours of the brewery will be held every hour.

Hungry? Gourmet food is available! The C&S brisket bus will be serving its famous brisket, along with a German-themed menu. C&S is currently talking with the Food Network because the food is THAT good (and reasonably priced). Food items will be available for purchase but C&S needs to know how many peo-ple will be eating to ensure that they have plenty of food.

Orlando Brewing is located near Downtown Orlando 1301 Atlanta Avenue, adjacent to the Orlando Amtrak Station.

Please RSVP to Laura Lee Shields [email protected] if you will be attending.

Monthly Cars & CoffeeArticle and Photos by Gary MeridethThe third Saturday morning of each month is Cars & Coffee Orlando time (Ocoee really). The concept was born from a desire to see cars that don’t get out of the garage very often and August 20th’s was successful on that score. There were several Porsche’s and their owners that we don’t often see............a couple that have never been at a Citrus event before:

• Bill’s silver 72 T Targa, found in a Kentucky chicken coup then fully restored

• A beautiful RSR longhood built from an SC tub• An orange 1968 912 driven by its owners of 41

years

The day was especially gratifying for me, since three of the other makes attending were cars central to the original reason for Cars & Coffee, a 57 Olds 88 con-vertible, an SS454 Chevelle and a Lamborghini be-longing to clients who rarely allow them out of the house. Great variety, great group of folks.

For directions, times and photos from previous months go to http://carsandcoffeeorlando.snappag-es.com/

Editors Note: While the Monthly Cars and Coffee event is not a PCA or club event, several club members attend and it looks to be a great way to spend a Sat-urday morning.

Alex Job Racing Second in GTC at ALMS Season Finale Petit Le MansAlex Job Racing (AJR) finished the American Le Mans Series Presented by Tequila Patrón season finale Petit Le Mans powered by Mazda second in the GTC class this evening.

Starting from the second row, Leh Keen, Charleston, South Carolina, wasted little time in driving the No. 23 Battery Tender/William Rast/Robert Graham/Alex Job Racing Porsche to the front of the GTC field. On his first pit stop on lap 22 for fuel under caution, he was exiting the pits and didn’t see the red light at the end of pit road and proceeded onto the track. The result was a pit lane violation and a 60-second penalty that put the team down a lap. With some strong driving by Keen, and crafty strategy from the team, Keen was back on the lead lap by circuit 54. The team continued to swap the top three positions throughout the day and night as pit stops cycled. Brian Wong, Newport Beach, California did a long mid-day stint to keep the team at the front of the field. Bill Sweedler, Westport, Connecticut drew the late-afternoon shift and drove a flawless double stint to keep the Battery Tender Porsche in contention.

The new 911 CarreraStuttgart. At 48, the Porsche 911 Carrera is younger than ever: The completely redesigned generation of the sports car icon is stepping into the limelight with its flat, stretched silhouette, exciting contours and precisely designed details, yet from the very first glance it remains unmistakably a 911. True to the 911 tradition, the distinctive Porsche design language with its tendons and muscles exudes power and el-egance.

The 100 millimetre (~ 3.9 inches) longer wheelbase and reduced height combined with the up to 20-inch wheels underpin the athletic appearance. At the same time, the typical sports car compact exterior di-mensions were retained. Seen from the front, the eye is drawn to the 911’s trademark wide-arched wings. They emphasise the wider front track, so that the new 911 Carrera models sit even more solidly on the road. The remodelled exterior mirrors are accommodated on the upper edge of the door and not as before on the mirror triangle. Not only is this aerodynamically advantageous, it also emphasises the new design line and visual impression of width.

The all-new, lightweight body is an intelligent alu-minium-steel construction. It is responsible for a sig-nificant proportion of the weight reduction of up to 45 kilograms. Combined with significantly greater ri-gidity. Aerodynamic optimisation – including a wider, variably extending rear spoiler – enabled the new 911 Carrera’s lift to be reduced yet further while retaining a very good Cd value.

To complement the modern exterior design, the Porsche designers created an interior, the architec-ture of which takes its cue from the Porsche Carrera GT. The driver is now even more closely integrated with the cockpit thanks to the centre console rising up to the front with the high-mounted shift lever or gear selector located especially close to the steering wheel in typical motorsport fashion. Classic Porsche elements are also to be found inside, as they are on the outside: the instrument cluster with five round in-struments – one of them a high resolution multifunc-tion screen, the central rev counter and the ignition lock to the left of the steering wheel.

Setting the standard in its class, as it has for genera-tions, the new 911 Carrera and Carrera S raise the

performance and efficiency bar yet another notch. All versions get by with significantly less than ten litres of fuel per 100 kilometres (28 mpg imp.). Fuel consump-tion and emissions are up to 16 per cent lower com-pared with its predecessor. Among other things, this is achieved by systems and functions such as auto start/stop, thermal management, electrical system

recuperation, the world’s first seven-speed manual transmission and – in conjunction with the Porsche-Doppelkupplungsgetriebe (PDK) – sailing as it is called. The new electro-mechanical power steering offers not only Porsche’s typical precision and feed-back but also helps to increase efficiency and reduce fuel-consumption.
