Transcript of Citizens Against Burning of Tires Presentation
Environmental Impact Radius Most Affected By Lafarge Brookfield Emissions (Environmental Assessment Brookfield Lafarge 1990)
Tire Incineration is Dangerous1.Higher Levels of Toxic Air Pollution2.Public Health Impacts3.Food Chain Bioaccumulation4.Agricultural Animal Health Impacts5.Ground Water Contamination
‘Lafarge plays hardball with every single cement kiln community and they tend to vigorously deny, deny deny that they are causing any pollution problems for the nearby residents.’ Dr Neil Carman, PHd Chemistry
• Mission Statement: To work with Nova Scotians to improve our environment, economy, and quality of life by reducing, reusing, recycling, and recovering resources
Tire Recycling Program is Sustained by Environmental Fee
Tire Size and Type Environmental Fee
All Passenger Tires and Light Truck Tires (including all on-road motorcycle, camper and trailer tires)
$4.50/tire
Highway truck, tractor, and trailer tires not exceeding 24.5 inches
$13.50/tire
Annual Report 2016
• Used tires are converted into Tire Derived Aggregate (TDA), a multi-purpose product that can be used in construction and engineering projects. This product is produced by a local company, which means in addition to helping our environment, we are supporting local business too.

WHY BURN TIRES?

Ingredients”

WHY NOT BURN TIRES?
Burning Tires = TOXIC EMISSIONS
Lead
Dioxins
Chromium
Benzene
JUST BECAUSE YOU CAN’T SEE IT, DOESN’T MEAN IT’S NOT THERE…
An Act to Amend Chapter 1of the Acts of 1994-95,
the Environment Act, to Prohibit
the Burning of Tires in Nova Scotia
Private Members Bill Introduced byMLA Keith Caldwell
Passed Third Reading: November 21, 2008
BILL NO. 26
2nd Session, 60th General AssemblyNova Scotia56 Elizabeth II, 2007
A spokesperson for the Environment Department said the Environment Act doesn't need to be amended to allow tires to be burned. If Lafarge is granted an industrial approval, which is the last step before the project can began, that will serve as the permit.
