What is a citizen ?
Citizen – as person who is a legal member of a self-governed community, such as a nation or state.
In this country citizenship is not based on a person’s race, gender, or ethnic origin.
Each citizen possesses equal rights under the law.
How to become a U.S. citizen ….
Legal Permanent Resident – this is someone who lives in the United States legally but is not a U.S. citizen
Naturalized citizen- living legally in the U.S. for 5 years, then pass a test showing that they know the constitution and U.S. history. Has to have good moral character and demonstrate the ability to communicate in English. Then the children of this person if minors will also be naturalized citizens.
Our government gives us certain rights as citizens. These rights are protected by our constitution.
Personal rights- these are the rights that allow people to do as they wish as long as it does not break the law , interfere with public order, or interfere with the rights of other citizens.
Political rights- are the rights that allow citizen to participate in the political system.
Economic rights- are the rights needed to earn a living and to acquire and transfer property.
Examples…..
With Great power comes great responsibility
Citizen should not only be aware of their rights but also learn to use them responsibly
Personal responsibility – are obligations that each person assumes individually.
Civic responsibility – are obligations that each person has to society
1. Obeying laws
What if you think a law is unjust do you still have the responsibility of obeying it ?Some people say that the responsibility to obey laws
has limits since no government is perfect.Many citizen have paid the price for disobeying the law. Martin Luther King Jr.Vietnam many people burned their draft cards and
refused to serve in the army. Women's rights advocates were arrested for attempting
to vote in an election before it was legal. Our system does allow citizens to try to change laws
they do not believe in

Groups of 3 or 4 debate these two questionsWhat should a person do when he or she
thinks a law is unjust? Give examples to support your opinion….
Suppose you cannot agree on what is in the common good. Should you pursue your own interests or still try to consider the interests of others? Explain your answer and provide examples.

It is part of the democratic process to be informed on the issues. -issues that affect national level, state and local.- A concerned citizen should follow each of
these things.

It is necessary to monitor how they are doing after they are elected.
This way we know if they should be reelected.

The community is where you live and spend time. Therefore it is your civic responsibility to work for the
betterment of the community around you.- Education- Parks and recreation - Library - Beautification
6. Paying Taxes
Tax dollars are put to work to improve the Country, State and community that you are a part of on a daily basis. Taxes paid at all levels should help the general tax
payer. Though you have no say in how your tax dollars are
spent you do have a say in who you put in power that chooses how they are spent.
7. Respecting the Rights of Others
Respect the rights, beliefs, and opinions of others Freedom is what this country is built on a you have the right to freedom of speech, religion,
press, assembly etc. And so does every other citizen of the U.S.
- Your freedoms only go so far……… not to impede the rights of others.
8.Serving as a Juror
Part of having the right to a trial by jury is that you must also take time out to serve in the jury for someone else.
If no one was willing to serve the system would not work.
9. Serving in the armed forces.
Part of having freedoms is that often others try to take them away. This means that as citizens we should be able to protect our freedoms and the freedoms of others if nessisary.
The draft has been implemented but further than that it is an honor to defend those rights that we hold dear.
