In this next week we will remember the most significant and won-drous event in human history. One man, totally blameless, took on

his shoulders the blame for everyone so that each and every person could know a real relationship with God. What does this mean for you?Is there any way in which you can belittle this gift of God by ignoring it, or by not giving the respect and honour that Jesus de-serves? Perhaps instead, many of you might pray that God will reveal, with freshness, the wonder of the gift of life so that you may be renewed in your desire to spread the Good News; that you may be drawn closer to God as He fills you with courage and strength in your everyday life, to live the way He is calling you to.

Dear Readers,

“My richest gain I count but loss, and pour contempt on all my pride.”

These words are one man’s response to the cross of Christ. What will be your response this Easter?

Captain LynneInternational Congress 2015This is an early word to inform you that the General has decided an In-ternational Congress will be held in London during the first week of July 2015. The Congress will mark the 150th Anniversary of the founding of the Army.Planning and preparation for the Congress will be coordinated by Lieut-Cols Eddie and Kathy Hobgood, officers of the US Southern Territory, who will based at IHQ from July 2012 under the supervision of Commissioner William Cochrane, International Secretary to the Chief of the Staff.Further information to follow in due course. Community Work Acknowledged

In recognising the considerable efforts put in by the Corps Lighthouse Community Centre volunteers to help those in need

at Christmas, ASDA supermarket (Fratton, Portsmouth) helped with contributions for the Christmas 2011 parcels as food donations at the Corps were insufficient.

On Monday 27th February, ASDA supermarket brought together the Corps Lighthouse Community Centre volunteers under Community Manager Melvyn Thomas to acknowledge their ongoing work in the Community, and especially at Christmas 2011. Asda Community Life Colleague Tracey Smith provided, courtesy of Asda, afternoon tea for those gathered and presented each volunteer and staff mem-ber with a chocolate Easter Egg.

A Bit of Housekeeping

Rick’s Easter Recipes

Many people use the ‘Citadel’ Kitchen during the week and on Sunday. It would be very helpful if you could ensure:

• It is not used as a dumping ground for items that really don’t belong in our kitchen.

• That any crockery etc used for refreshment are washed up and returned to the appropriate cupboard. I think you’ll agree that it’s not reasonable to expect someone else to do this for you.

Thankyou for your understanding.JB

fruit

• 1 Iceberg lettuce, shredded

Faith & Football (Extra Time)Seven people from the Corps are Reading Mentors for children in Year 2 (6-7yr olds). Teaching is for an hour after school & is on a one-to-one basis. We are in several schools & work with Christians from other local churches.

Faith & Football provide excellent teaching material based on well known Bible Stories. Level 1 is very basic - few words and lots of pictures, but children soon move on. Level 4 provides a very good standard for chil-dren of that age.

At the end of each term there is a presentation, parents are invited and, often, there is a Footballer attending. The children (and some of the Mums) really enjoy this. There are awards and plenty of food. It gives us an opportunity to meet the parents of our own particular child as well as the others.

Most of the children benefit considerably from the one-to-one reading tui-tion and we hope also absorb some of the Christian teaching and caring we try to provide.I find it a very satisfying part of my week.Joyce

The battle for lost souls is won by prayer and intercession.Prayer is the warfare.

Evangelism is not the attempt to win the battle - it is the mopping up operation.

The physical possessions of the Church, the Buildings, organsiations and programmes

are the trucks we drive into the fieldof battle to load up the spoils ofthe victory won by intercession.

Annual Appeal 2012Taking a look at standing days

The two most important requirements for major success are:1. Being in the right place at the right time.2. Doing something about it.

The first requirement depends on the time of day and the location of the collecting stand!!The second depends on the number of collectors we can mobilise. This is the bit we can do something about!

Our success to date has raised the sum of £625.15 and we have also received a donation of approximately £460. Many thanks to all who have collected so far.

The remaining standing days for this year are:Saturday 14th April - Waitrose, Marmion Rd - 3pm-6pmSaturday 12th May - Asda Bridge Centre - 10am-12noonSaturday 2nd June - Citywide - 9am-4pmMonday 25th June to Friday 29th of June - Portsmouth & Southsea Railway Station (peak times) - 6.30-9.30am 4pm-6pmSaturday 30th June -Sainsbury’s, Commercial Rd - 12noon-3pmFriday 20th of July - Citywide - 9am-4pmSaturday 21st July - Citywide - 9am-4pmSaturday 8th Sept - Morrisons, Anchorage Pk - 3pm-6pmFriday 12th Oct - Sainsbury’s, Farlington - 9am-12noon Saturday 13th Oct - Sainsbury’s, Farlington - 12noon-3pmI leave you with the words of a chorus: I want to live right that God may use me At any time and anywhere.

Evening of Talents

I thought I would share with you some things that have been happening or will be happening soon.First of all we have reached our full capacity in Kids Club with 16 children coming along regularly for a few weeks. We just don’t have the space for anymore children!! This has been really good and a good encouragement for the 5 that had been coming on their own for a number of weeks.Starting after Easter will be ‘Angel Feet’ this is a dance club for girls and boys aged 2-5. This idea was thought of by Nikki Bone who will be lead-ing it. So every Thursday at 4pm until 4.45pm there will be little ‘Angel Feet’ dancing around. We hope to use the children who attend these ses-sions in future meetings. The plans for Summer Camp are going well but there are still a few places left, so if you know any children who would benefit from this week then please let me know. That’s about all for now. Thank you for your prayers and support........keep praying and keep supporting :-)Amanda

If you’re interested, then phone Trevor on 02392 452 012.

His address is 8 Pook Lane, Havant, Hants.

Here is a very old (but true) story with a modern 2012 twist.

After a brief honeymoon in Morecombe, my wife and I were sent to our first married Corps appointment in a suburb of Swansea in South Wales. The quarters was a dismal place with a toilet at the end of a long, uncultivated garden. cont. over......

Pause for thought

Page 18: Citadel Scene April 2012

16 Citadel Scene

However, we did have our very own first bookcase with four shelves of closely packed, mostly second-hand books. Of course there was the red volume of ‘Orders &Regulations’ plus the Army’s black ‘Handbook of Doctrine’. We also had a white cat whose favourite spot was sitting on top of the bookcase.

So there we were, a happily married couple of Lieutenants, my wife would stroke the cat whilst I lovingly gazed at the musty volumes - ‘His ‘n’ Hers mixed together - my wife’s books clearly marked inside with her maiden name and house number from the Training College: Anna Bell, 3.

One day, whilst Anna was in the Home League, I selected a few second-hand books I decided I didn’t want / had read and headed down to the lo-cal second-hand book store. I was duly able to change them for two good volumes with the hope of improving my limited Bible knowledge.

Snowy, our white cat, continued to be admired by my wife as he sat on the bookshelf, and I continued to gaze at our books.

A week later, we were together in town and, lo and behold, we went into the second-hand bookshop just to browse. Suddenly, my wife saw a book and pulled my arm to say, ‘Look, we’ve got that one.’ She pulled it out with a smile. The title and author would forever be printed on my brain: ‘The Gospel of the Hereafter’ by J. Paterson Smyth.

She opened the cover page and then gasped with surprise and then hor-ror. Her name was printed there. ‘It is my book’, she said. With ashen face I quickly purchased the book and we silently returned home. I tried to explain that the whole thing was an accident, carelessness on my part in changing the book. There had been no malice involved at all!

From then on, my wife would stroke the cat as he sat upon the bookcase and take a good look at the books as well. Many books have come and gone from our shelves over the years, but one has remained constant. Who says God hasn’t got a sense of humour? I never actually read the book until this year! It’s brilliant, in fact is out of this world. An aspect of the Christian Gospel I had rather neglected.

Pause for thought - cont.

I doubt if it has ever been reprinted - but if it was, I would suggest a more modern title like ‘The Gospel of the Resurrection.’As Jesus said to Martha, John 11:25, ‘I am the Resurrection and the Life.
