Dear Readers,In 1968, Cistercian monks at the Abbey of Saint Joseph in Spencer, Massachusetts, recognizing the difficulty of obtaining English translations of works by early Cistercian authors, decided to create a publishing house devoted to such works. This practical goal, of monks providing for their own needs, was the origin of Cistercian Publications.

Lay scholars soon joined in as Cistercian Publications began to publish translations and studies of twelfth- and thirteenth-century Cistercians, then of patristic authors, of the Desert Fathers and Mothers, of spiritual writers from other traditions and periods, and of twentieth- and twenty-first-century men and women of faith.

For almost fifty years now Cistercian Publications has published the fruit of nearly two thousand years of monastic theology and spirituality. We offer books in three distinct series: Cistercian Fathers (translations of the early Cistercians), Cistercian Studies (academic studies of such works and related monastic topics), and Monastic Wisdom (contemporary works of spirituality and Christian life). These series offer readers the works of great men and women of faith and learning, past and present—invitations to enter into their thought and their lives.

Saint Paul warned that “knowledge puffs up, but love builds up” (1 Cor 8:1). But the books published by Cistercian Publications seek rather to provide knowledge that does not puff up, because it is imbued by the history and experience of the love that builds up. This love is at the heart of our whole endeavor, inspired by St. Bernard’s three-word summary of the entire Gospel: Nihil dilectae timendum; “One who is loved has nothing to fear.”

We invite you to explore the banquet of monastic theology we offer you, to taste its prophetic, luminous, and sometimes scandalous search for the sight of God.

Hildegard of Bingen

Solutions to Thirty-Eight Questions

Translated by Beverly Mayne Kienzle with Jenny C. Bledsoe

and Stephen H. BehnkeIntroduction and Notes by

Beverly Mayne Kienzle with Jenny C. Bledsoe

Perhaps the least studied of Hildegard of Bingen’s writings, Solutions to Thirty-Eight Questions is translated in this volume into English for the first time from the original Latin. In this work of exegesis, Hildegard (1098–1179) resolves thorny passages of Scripture, theological questions, and two issues in hagiographic texts. Solutions to Thirty-Eight Questions joins Hildegard’s Homilies on the Gospels, which were directed to her nuns, as evidence of the seer’s exegetical writing as well as her authority as an exegete. The twelfth-century saint wrote in standard genres of exegesis—homilies and solutiones—and her interpretations of Scripture were widely sought, including by male audiences.Available April 2014

The Song That I Am

On the Mystery of MusicÉlisabeth-Paule Labat

Translated and introduced by Erik Varden, OCSO

The Song That I Am: On the Mystery of Music is a short but full-to-the-brim essay on the decisive role that great music (whether Bach, Tavener, or Gregorian chant) ought to play in the spiritual life. With admirable restraint Élisabeth-Paule Labat shares her interior experience of music and thus continually opens up fresh vistas through worlds of sound and spirit. With her uncanny gift of language, Labat precisely describes soundings and yearnings of the soul that many of us glimpse fleetingly. Because “only the lover sings” (St. Augustine), her final illumination is that the experience of profound music ought to transform us into the beauty that we hear.Available April 2014

Élisabeth-Paule Labat, OSB (1897–1975) was born in Tarbes, France. After the Great War, she moved to Paris and studied at the Schola Cantorum. A brilliant pianist and composer, Labat also studied Gregorian chant. In 1922 she entered the Benedictine abbey of Saint-Michel de Kergonan in Brittany, and took Élisabeth as her religious name. Can a Seamless Garment Be Truly Torn?

Questions Surrounding the Jewish-Catholic Löb Family,

1881–1945Peter Steffen and Hans Evers

The conversion of Lutz Löb and Jenny van Gelder from Judaism to Roman Catholicism dramatically changed the lives of the extended Löb family. This scientific-historical study traces the personal and spiritual journey of Lutz and Jenny from their baptisms in 1907 through the lives of their children. The story benefits from historical documents and pieces of oral history from the only one of their eight children who survived the Nazi era, Paula van Broekhoven-Löb. The abbess of Koningsoord Abbey and the abbot of Koningshoeven Abbey generously provided access to the archives of the monasteries where the seven other Löb children lived as nuns and monks of the Löb family. Each chapter begins with a citation from a significant situation or event, placing the reader immediately within the lived experience of that period. Photos of the time and the family supplement the historical narrative. The secret conversion of Lutz and Jenny and their lifelong witness to their faith created a tear in the fabric of the extended family while later leading to many idealized portrayals of them and their children. It is the intent of this book to offer an accurate and balanced account, situating the Catholic Löb family within their extended Jewish family, and to correct several decades of hagiography, so restoring humanity and dignity to the memories of the Löb family.

MystagogyA Monastic Reading of Dionysius Areopagita

Alexander GolitzinEdited by Bogdan G. Bucur

Mystagogy proposes an interpretation of the Pseudo-Dionysian corpus in light of the liturgical and ascetic tradition that defined the author and his audience. Characterized by both striking originality and remarkable fidelity to the patristic and late neoplatonic traditions, the Dionysian corpus is a coherent and unified structure, whose core and pivot is the treatise known as the Ecclesiastical Hierarchy. Given Pseudo-Dionysius’ fundamental continuity with earlier Christian theology and spirituality, it is not surprising that the church, and in particular the ascetic community, recognized that this theological synthesis articulated its own fundamental experience and aspirations.

Thomas Merton 1915–2015SophiaThe Hidden Christ of Thomas MertonChristopher PramukThis book looks to Thomas Merton as a “classic” theologian of the Christian tradition from East to West and offers an interpretation of his mature Christology, with special attention to his remarkable prose poem of 1962, “Hagia Sophia.” Bringing Merton’s mystical-prophetic vision fully into dialogue with contemporary Christology, Russian sophiology, and Zen, as well as figures such as John Henry Newman and Abraham Joshua Heschel, the author carefully but boldly builds the case that Sophia might infuse new vitality into our own religious lives.

Thomas Merton 1915–2015In the Valley of

WormwoodCistercian Blessed and

Saints of the Golden AgeThomas Merton

Edited with an introduction by Patrick Hart

Foreword by Brian Patrick McGuire

Shortly after entering the monastic life in December 1941, a relatively unknown Trappist monk called Frater Louis—who would later be known to the world by his given name, Thomas Merton—began to pen biographical sketches of early Cistercian blessed and saints. These were initially collected, printed, and bound inexpensively, with no mention of the author, by the Abbey of Gethsemani. They are now published here for a wide audience for the first time. This work of the very young Merton perhaps takes on added significance when one considers the writing that lay just ahead of him at the time. In 1948, his autobiography, The Seven Storey Mountain, was published and soon became an unexpected national bestseller. This long-awaited publication of In the Valley of Wormwood offers a window into Merton’s thinking and his spiritual life just a few years before his phenomenal autobiography would see the light of day.

From the People of God series

Thomas MertonFaithful VisionaryMichael W. Higgins

Thomas Merton was the consummate post-modern holy one: flawed, anti-institutional, a voice for the voiceless. But he was also a classical traditionalist: centered, obedient, in search of stability. He was a religious thinker of remarkable insight, a social commentator of courage and conviction, and a writer of startling virtuosity. Michael W. Higgins recounts the life of this insatiable wanderer. He explores the various layers of influence and evolution in Merton’s thought and spirituality. This book tells the remarkable story of a life that remains to be understood from its beginnings and long after its premature ending. Available June 2014

Bernard of Clairvaux Sermons for Lent and the Easter SeasonEdited by John Leinenweber and Mark Scott, OCSOForeword by Wim VerbaalThis volume contains Saint Bernard’s sermons for the liturgical seasons of Lent and Easter. Included are sermons for the Purification, Septuagesima, the feast of Saint Benedict, and the feast of the Annunciation, all of which are interpreted by Bernard in light of the paschal mystery. In the sermons for Lent, especially, one gets to know a more hesitant and searching Bernard than appears in his other liturgical sermons.

Bernard of Clairvaux

Sermons for AutumnTranslated by Irene Edmonds

with Mark Scott, OCSOIntroduction by Wim Verbaal On the anniversary of the dedication of the monastery church at Clairvaux, Saint Bernard spoke to the community to explain the meaning of the feast: “What sanctity can these stones have that we should celebrate their festival? They do indeed have sanctity, but it is because of your bodies. . . . Your bodies are holy because of your souls, and this house is holy because of your bodies.” The thirty-eight sermons in this volume carry forth this theme, revealing the holiness of the monastic life as monks alternate through the rhythm of the day and the year between the opus Dei and manual labor, journeying faithfully through life to death and the transitus to glory. The twelfth-century Ecclesiastica Officia of the Cistercian Order required abbots to speak formally to their communities in chapter on seventeen fixed days, mostly liturgical feasts. This volume witnesses to Bernard’s fulfillment of this requirement and includes sermons for the Assumption and Nativity of the Virgin and the Feast of All Saints, sermons devoted to the feasts of particular saints celebrated during the autumn months, sermons for the time of harvest, and funeral sermons that look forward the eternal joy in the communion of saints.

The Lives of Monastic Reformers, 2

Abbot Vitalis of Savigny, Abbot Godfrey of Savigny, Peter of

Avranches, and Blessed HamoIntroduced and Translated by

Hugh Feiss, OSB, Ronald Pepin, and Maureen M. O’Brien

This volume offers translations of the twelfth-century Latin vitae of four monks of the Monastery of Savigny: Abbot Vitalis, Abbot Godfrey, Peter of Avranches, and Blessed Hamo. Founded in 1113 by Vitalis of Mortain, an influential hermit-preacher, Savigny expanded to a congregation of thirty monasteries under his successor Godfrey (1122–1138). In 1147, the entire congregation joined the Cistercian Order. Around 1172, two monks of Savigny, Peter of Avranches and Hamo, friends but very different personalities, died. Their stories were told in two further vitae. The vitae of these four men exemplify the variety of people and movements found in the monastic ferment of the twelfth century.

Gregory the GreatMoral Reflections on

the Book of Job, Volume 1 (Introduction and Books 1–5)Translated by Brian Kerns, OCSO

Introduction by Mark DelCogliano Gregory the Great was pope from 590 to 608, a time of great turmoil in Italy and in the western Roman Empire generally because of the barbarian invasions. Gregory’s experience as prefect of the city of Rome and as apocrisarius of Pope Pelagius fitted him admirably for the new challenges of the papacy. The Moral Reflections on the Book of Job were first given to the monks who accompanied Gregory to the embassy in Constantinople. This first volume of the work contains books 1–5, accompanied by an introduction by Mark DelCogliano.

Born from the Gaze of God

The Tibhirine Journal of a Martyr Monk (1993–1996) Christophe Lebreton, OCSO

Christophe Lebreton, aged forty-six, was the youngest of the seven Trappist monks assassinated in Algeria by terrorists in 1996. He was also the poet of the group. Anyone who was enthralled by the recent film Of Gods and Men should find in Brother Christophe’s Journal ample and deeply moving material for meditation on both the light and the darkness inherent in the human condition. The Journal begins in 1993, four months before the terrorists’ first visit to the monastery at Tibhirine, and it ends on March 19, 1996, just seven days before the monks’ abduction. Entry after entry touches readers both by its vivid sincerity and by the fresh and inventive quality of its poetic expression. Through these pages readers become privy to the daily events in the soul of a generous searcher after God under very trying conditions. His style is highly personal, playful, ardent, full of color and whimsy.Available August 2014

Living in the House Of God

Monastic EssaysMargaret Malone, SGS

In Living in the House of God, Margaret Malone draws on her study of and research on the Rule of Saint Benedict to show the ways in which this ancient rule can illuminate modern life. The broad gamut of topics this book examines—from Benedictine life as sacrament to Augustine’s influence on Benedict to obedience and the art of listening, among others—is itself a witness to the generous flexibility of the Rule, as Benedict proposes a way of life that truly corresponds to the deepest needs of the whole of human nature.Available Fall 2014

Good LivingReflections on the Fourth Chapter of Benedict’s Rule

Michael Casey, OCSOThere is more in Benedict’s Rule than meets the eye. Based on the rules of life of John Cassian and Saint Basil, Benedict invites us to go further back to the scriptural basis of all Christian and monastic living and pursue our spiritual journey by the guidance of the Gospel. This book of reflections on the tools for good living is intended to be read very slowly, one section at a time. In addition to communicating reflections on each verse of chapter 4, Casey invites readers to:• continue the process of reflection for

themselves • apply what is written to their own lives draw on their own wisdom and insight• and, ultimately, broaden their experience of

God in the DarkSuffering and Desire in the Spiritual LifeSusan R. Pitchford; Foreword by Alan Jones We often misinterpret times of darkness, assuming we’ve failed and God has abandoned us. In God in the Dark, Susan Pitchford suggests that darkness is not a place of abandonment but a place of intimacy and a special call to a deeper relationship with the God who desires us. Once we understand this, we will not have to fear the dark, and when the night closes in around us, we can experience it as an embrace.

“This remarkable book is a passionate call for the recovery of the Catholic tradition of passionate spiritual search. With her intensely personal and unflinchingly honest writing, the author encourages the seeker on a journey through suffering and joy, darkness and loneliness, towards enlightenment and union. Her special friends and guides on the difficult yet wonderful journey are the Beguine mystics of the fourteenth century, and other eccentric and (as she says) ‘weird’ friends, ancient and contemporary. This is a book for now: the author refuses to stick with no longer relevant spiritual metaphors or to accept once revered spiritual practices just because they are old. There is a freshness here, and a delightfully frank humor, but most of all a passionate love.” Rosemary Luling Haughton, PhD (honorary), theologian, author of The Passionate God, The Catholic Thing, Gifts in the Ruins

The Sacred Gaze Contemplation and the

Healing of the SelfSusan R. Pitchford

Foreword by Alan Jones

Eight hundred years ago, Clare of Assisi advised a correspondent to gaze into the mirror of the crucified Christ and study her own face within it. One hundred years ago, sociologist Charles Horton Cooley said we can know our self only as it is reflected to us by others. Contemplation is the choice to find our reflection in the divine Mirror. In The Sacred Gaze, Susan Pitchford explores how a false self is created by distortions in the mirrors around us. Drawing from the mystical and sociological traditions, and with practical suggestions for how to begin, Pitchford shows how gazing into the face of Christ can reveal to us who we really are. When the true self is known, and known as God’s beloved, the way is opened to radical freedom and joy.

The Discourses of Philoxenos of Mabbug

A New Translation and Introduction

Translated by Robert A. Kitchen

The thirteen Discourses of Philoxenos of Mabbug (445–523) were delivered to new monks at a monastery under his episcopal care. Written in elegant Syriac, the Discourses deal with the fundamentals of the monastic and ascetic life—faith, simplicity, fear of God, renunciation, and the struggle against the demons of gluttony and fornication. This is Philoxenos’s longest work and his most popular. It avoids the strident character of his letters and commentaries that were composed to advance the anti-Chalcedonian movement. This is the first English translation of an important Syriac text since the 1894 translation, now difficult to find. The introduction to this translation of the Discourses takes into account the scholarly work done and the books and articles published about Philoxenos in the past half century. There are no other titles in English that deal with the Discourses in this depth.

Smaragdus of Saint-Mihiel

The Crown of MonksTranslated by David Barry, OSB

Smaragdus was a monk and abbot of considerable standing in the early ninth-century church. His Diadema Monachorum (The Crown of Monks), together with a later commentary on the Rule of Saint Benedict, established him as one of the most significant interpreters of Benedict’s Rule in his day and for succeeding generations. Smaragdus intended The Crown of Monks as a daily resource for monastic communities, to be read at the evening chapter. He sought to arouse well-established monks “to a keener and loftier yearning for the heavenly country” and “to strengthen and instill fear” in weaker monks. In this gathering of excerpts from various respected sources, a genre known as the florilegium, Smaragdus addresses a wide variety of topics perennially significant to monks. It offers rich material for lectio and meditation, forming monastic minds and hearts for facing whatever challenges come their way, linking them with the formative years of the monastic tradition, and pointing them to the final goal: the kingdom of heaven.

“Abbot Smaragdus of Saint-Mihiel (760–830) was a monk whose heart and mind were steeped in Scripture and the church doctors and fathers. Drawing from the best of his sources and his own lived experience, he wrote The Crown of Monks to provide a source of daily guidance, encouragement, and challenge for his monks. Thanks to this translation by David Barry, the wisdom of Smaragdus is now available to us who follow the monastic path today. Barry provides an introduction to Smaragdus and his works that will be of interest to both general readers and academics.” Sr. Colleen Maura McGrane, OSB, Liturgist Benedictine Sisters of Perpetual Adoration Clyde, Missouri

The Book of the EldersSayings of the Desert Fathers

The Systematic CollectionTranslated by John Wortley; Foreword by Bernard FlusinThe sayings and stories (or apophthegmata) of the early desert fathers began to be written down, collected, and codified by the fifth century. The earliest attempts to codify them are now lost. As the collection grew, they were first organized alphabetically, according to the name of the abba who spoke them, in a major collection known as the Apophthegmata Patrum Alphabetica. A supplementary collection, the Anonymous Apophthegmata, followed. Later, both collections were combined and arranged systematically rather than alphabetically. This collection was created sometime between 500 and 575 and later went through a couple of major revisions, the second of which appeared sometime before 970. This second revision was published in an excellent new critical edition, with a French translation, in 1993. Now, in The Book of the Elders, John Wortley offers an English translation of this collection, based entirely on the Greek of that text.

The Rule of St Basil in Latin and English

A Revised Critical EditionTranslated by Anna M. Silvas

Basil of Caesarea (AD 329–78) was one of the fourth century’s greatest theologians and pastors. His influence on the foundation of monastic life was enormous. As he toured the early ascetic communities, members would ask Basil about various aspects of living the Gospel life. Their questions and Basil’s replies were taken down by tachygraphers and eventually became the Small Asketikon, first published in 366. The Regula Basilii is a Latin translation of this work, done by Rufinus of Aquileia in 397. It is one of the major sources of the Rule of Saint Benedict, and Benedict recommends it to zealous monks, calling it “the rule of our holy father Basil.” This volume represents a new Latin edition, translated into English and annotated by Anna M. Silvas. The translation is based on the Latin text, Basilii Regula—A Rufino Latine Versa, from Klaus Zelzer, Corpus Ecclesiasticorum Latinum, vol. 86. It also includes three extra questions and answers that survive only in the Syriac translation. Silvas balances masterfully between the rigors of academic research and the interests of an intelligent, non-specialist readership. This volume promises to become an indispensable resource in understanding both the history and the spirituality of monastic life.

Gregory the GreatOn the Song of Songs

Translation and Introduction by Mark DelCoglianoGregory the Great (+604) was a master of the art of exegesis. His interpretations are theologically profound, methodologically fascinating, and historically influential. Nowhere is this more clearly seen than in his exegesis of the Song of Songs. Gregory’s interpretation of this popular Old Testament book not only owes much to Christian exegetes who preceded him, such as Origen, but also profoundly influenced later Western Latin exegetes, such as Bernard of Clairvaux. This volume includes all that Gregory had to say on the Song of Songs: his Exposition on the Song of Songs, the florilegia compiled by Paterius (Gregory’s secretary) and the Venerable Bede, and, finally, William of Saint Thierry’s Excerpts from the Books of Blessed Gregory on the Song of Songs. It is now the key resource for reading and studying Gregory’s interpretation of the Song of Songs.

Separate but EqualCistercian Lay Brothers 1120–1350

James FranceThe institution of the lay brotherhood (conversi) was not original to the Cistercians, but they developed it to its fullest extent. Although lay, the conversi were under the same vows as monks and represented a new form of religious life. While monks were bound to the recitation of the Divine Office, the lay brothers were dedicated to a life of toil and acted as the monks’ auxiliaries. Their contribution to the spiritual and material life of the Cistercian Order was immense. This book is richly illustrated with images from manuscripts, stained glass, and architectural sculpture.

Included are sermons for the Purification, Septuagesima, the feast of Saint Benedict, and the feast of the Annunciation, all of which are interpreted by Bernard in light of the paschal mystery. Bernard of ClairvauxTheologian of the Cross

Anthony N. S. LaneThis book offers a complete study of the doctrine of the cross in the writings of Saint Bernard of Clairvaux. Until now, this theologically rich topic has not received the attention it calls for. The book analyzes and expounds the doctrine of the cross based on the nearly seven hundred references to the cross in Bernard’s writings. Among the important topics the author explores are • Bernard’s letter against Abelard, a work of central significance for this topic• the “usward” aspect of Christ’s work, its subjective influence on us, and the “Godward” aspect, the way in which the cross puts us right with God• objections to this teaching posed by Abelard and others• ways in which Bernard applies his doctrine of the cross• a concluding assessment of Bernard’s teaching on this topicCS248P, 978-0-87907-248-3 Paperback, 240 pp., 5 1⁄2 x 8 1⁄2, $29.95e CS248E, 978-0-87907-746-4 eBook, $27.99

The Life of the VowsInitiation into the Monastic Tradition 6

Thomas MertonEdited by Patrick F. O’Connell

As novice master of the Cistercian Abbey of Our Lady of Gethsemani in Kentucky, Thomas Merton presented weekly conferences to familiarize his charges with the meaning and purpose of the vows they aspired to undertake. In this setting, he offered a thorough exposition of the theological, canonical, and, above all, spiritual dimensions of the vows. Merton set the vows firmly in the context of the anthropological, moral, soteriological, and ecclesial dimensions of human, Christian, and monastic life. He addressed such classical themes of Christian morality as the nature of the human person and his acts; the importance of justice in relation to the passion of Christ, to friendship, and to love; and self-surrender as the key to grace, prayer, and the vowed life. Merton’s words on these topics clearly spring from a committed heart and often flow with the soaring intensity of style that we have come to expect in his more enthusiastic prose. The texts of these conferences represent the longest and most systematically organized of any of the numerous series of conferences that Merton presented during the decade of his mastership. They may be the most directly pastoral work Merton ever wrote. MW030P, 978-0-87907-030-4 Paperback, 664 pp., 5 1⁄2 x 8 1⁄2, $44.95e MW030E, 978-0-87907-793-8 eBook, $41.99

The Art of Winning SoulsPastoral Care of Novices

Michael Casey, OCSOIn his chapter on the procedure for the reception of new brothers, Saint Benedict makes provision for entrusting them to the care of “a senior who is skilled in winning souls who will diligently pay attention to them in everything” (58.6). In The Art of Winning Souls: Pastoral Care of Novices, Michael Casey, OCSO, reflects on what this means today, based on his own experience and observation of the fruitful ministry of others. Here Casey focuses on the pastoral care given in the name of a monastic community to those who enter it, from initial contact up to the point where their vocation has recognizably stabilized. His reflections are not intended to be prescriptive. They are, rather, descriptive of what he considers to be best practice, as he has encountered this in his experience of many different expressions of the monastic and Benedictine charism. This book promises to serve as an indispensible resource for vocation directors, novice directors, and junior directors for years to come. The Art of LeadershipNotker Wolf, OSB, and Enrica Rosanna, FMA

Without question, managing people effectively requires strong leadership. What exactly characterizes good leadership? Are leadership qualities easily teachable? And what are the significant gender differences between masculine and feminine leadership styles? Abbot Primate Notker Wolf and Sister Enrica Rosanna have each held significant leadership positions, and, based on their real-world experience, they examine and answer these questions. Together they establish common mistakes that most people make and explain what it truly takes to become an effective leader in business, politics, school, family, and religious life. A Future Full of Hope?Edited by Gemma Simmonds, CJForeword by Timothy Radcliffe

Are we looking at the imminent death of religious life in the church, a future full of hope, or something in between? This book, based on papers given at a colloquium run by the Religious Life Institute at Heythrop College, University of London, addresses urgent questions around the renewal and survival of religious life. Despite recent scandals and a steady diminishment of numbers since Vatican II, religious remain a powerful source of inspiration and positive energy within church and society. Fifty years after the Council, today’s context and questions are different. Did the Council bring about a renewal or an implosion of religious life? Who is looking at religious vocation today? What are they seeking, and what are they finding? With a foreword by former Dominican Master General Timothy Radcliffe, leading authors on religious life, including Gregory Collins, OSB, and Christopher Jamison, OSB, explore these questions and propose answers that offer material for individual and communal reflection.978-0-8146-3802-6 Paperback, 150 pp., 5 3⁄8 x 8 1⁄2, $16.95e 978-0-8146-3827-9 eBook, $14.99Rights: North America, English

“This book is the result of papers given at a colloquium held at Worth Abbey, Sussex. It addresses the future of religious life as seen through the eyes of women and men religious in the United Kingdom and Ireland. It also keeps dynamics surrounding the US Apostolic Visitation of Religious and the Ryan Report in mind. The book is divided into three parts: (1) religious life: fundamental questions, (2) the once and future vocations, (3) forward into the future. At the end of each chapter there are reflection questions which make it ideal for use within a group. It is a well-balanced and insightful theological, canonical, and practical book with significant insight into the culture and church of our day as well as the questions facing religious today. As a person who has been in the midst of issues pertaining to religious for over thirty years, I highly recommend this book.” Dr. Eileen Jaramillo

Christian de Chergé A Theology of Hope

Christian Salenson; Translated by Nada ConicChristian de Chergé, prior of the Cistercian community at Tibhirine, Algeria, was assassinated with six of his fellow monks in 1996. De Chergé saw his monastic vocation as a call to be a person of prayer among persons who pray, that is, among the Muslim friends and neighbors with whom he and his brothers shared daily life. De Chergé’s writings bear witness to an original thinker who insists on the value of interreligious dialogue for a more intelligent grasp of one’s own faith. Christian Salenson shows us the personal, ecclesial, and theological foundations of de Chergé’s vocation and the originality of his life and thought. He shows how the experience of a small monastery lost in the Atlas Mountains of Algeria contributes importantly to today’s theological debates.CS247P, 978-0-87907-247-6 Paperback, 224 pp., 5 1⁄2 x 8 1⁄2, $19.95e CS247E, 978-0-87907-745-7 eBook, $14.99

Agnes Day, OCSOLight in the Shoe Shop offers readers a unique and intimate glance into the day-to-day experience of living the cloistered life in feminine mode. In her “cobbler’s contemplations”—no metaphor here: the author did indeed make and mend her sisters’ shoes for many years—Mother Agnes reveals the very simple secret of monastic life, a secret she shows to be an inseparable combination of mindfulness and fidelity. It is continual mindfulness of God’s transformative presence and action and, in response, equally continual fidelity to each of the minutely detailed ways in which that loving divine presence woos the contemplative’s heart. Even those who strive for a more contemplative life outside of literal cloisters will find her reflections to be a great gift and inspiration. Choosing, despite known danger, to remain in the adopted homeland he loved, one of the martyred monks had earlier written: “I am also aware of the caricature of Islam which a certain Islamism encourages. I Am the WayStages of Prayer in Saint Bernard

Maureen McCabe, OCSOAs founding abbot of Clairvaux, Bernard’s giftedness and good judgment made him an often-sought resource by both church and secular powers, and in that capacity, he was sometimes delightful and sometimes dismaying to those who encountered him. But when it comes to prayer, says Maureen McCabe, OCSO, Bernard can only delight. Anyone who gives Bernard a chance will discover teachings full of unction and spiritual discernment. He draws us to continual prayer through an unshakable confidence in the One who believes in our capacity to love without limits, no matter what state we’re in or stage we’re at. Lovers of the PlaceMonasticism Loose in the Church

Francis Kline, OCSOForeword by Michael Downey

Monasticism has often been understood as a separation from the rest of the church, apart from the concerns of “the world.” In Lovers of the Place, Abbot Kline provided a fresh vision of the monastic life as one form of the Christian vocation that must struggle to find its place alongside other expressions of Christian life. He firmly believed that as monasticism renews itself for the church, it will in turn renew the church. In looking to the baptized, who discern in the monastic way their own journey, monastics can find new energies for the journey ahead. Having had their own treasury blessedly looted by the baptized, monastics find themselves loose in a world that has become more and more their place and their home. By exploring this theme of monasticism in the church and the church in monasticism, readers will find answers to such questions as How do we belong to the church? and What can we give to the church in a more obvious way?

Monastic Interreligious Dialogue Series

Monks and Muslims IICreating Communities of FriendshipEdited by Mohammad Ali Shomali and

William Skudlarek, OSBIf Christians and Muslims are to live in peace, encouraging one another to grow in holiness and working together for the good of all God’s creation, they must move beyond politicized and often negative images of one another. Monastic/Muslim dialogue issuing from friendship and focused on revelation, prayer, and witness is an important component in this effort. Indeed, it is essential. A conference jointly sponsored by the International Institute for Islamic Studies and Monastic Interreligious Dialogue brought together Iranian Shi‘a Muslims and Christian monastics to Qum, Iran. Their first gathering was held a year previous in Rome, Italy, and focused on spiritual topics like meditation and prayer. The second meeting in Qum was an occasion to deepen the bonds of friendship that had already been established. The conference theme centered on friendship and the dialogue explored the scriptural, theological, spiritual, philosophical, and practical bases for friendship between monks and Muslims. This follow-up book invites readers to listen in and learn from their conversation and witness.
