The Cisco 4000 Series ISRs are modular routers with LAN and WAN connections that can be configured by means of interface modules, including Cisco Enhanced Service Modules (SM-Xs), and Network Interface Modules (NIMs).

Cisco 4000 Series ISRs introduce new chassis, modules, and WAN services with a robust management framework and validated designs for the Cisco Intelligent WAN.Cisco 4000 platforms, together with Cisco UCS E-Series server modules, provide a flexible platform that can easily adapt to the changing application landscape. Use these routers to support all cloud applications on any device.Cisco 4000 Series ISRs are designed to meet Gigabit forwarding performance needs while running the broadest set of network and application services on a single platform. Cisco 4000 Series ISRs offer:

High-quality user experience: During peak loads, the multi-core CPU architecture running Cisco IOS-XE can enable resiliency by using separate control and data services planes.

Faster response to business and user needs: New pay-as-grow performance and services allows IT increase throughput and expand across a rich portfolio of on-demand network and application services with no truck rolls

A wide range of connectivity options: ISR 4000 supports integrated Gigabit Ethernet, T1/E1, T3/E3, PRI, xDSL, and more

Compare the Various Models of Cisco ISR 4000 Series Platform

Cisco ISR 4000 Platform Comparison

The Cisco 4000 family contains the Cisco 4451, 4431, 4351, 4331, and 4321 routers, which differ primarily in performance capabilities and in the number of Network Interface Module (NIM) and Enhanced Service Module (SM-X) slots supported.

Page 5: Cisco isr 4000 platform comparison & benefits of migrating to cisco 4000 series

The Cisco 4000 Family contains five platforms: the 4451, 4431, 4351, 4331, and 4321 ISRs.

You can order Cisco 4000 Series ISR platforms with dual power supplies that may be configured for power-supply redundancy or increased power for Power over Ethernet (PoE). The primary and secondary power supplies can be AC, PoE, DC, or any combination of the three. In order to power PoE ports on a switch module integrated into a router, you must order the router with a PoE power supply. You can order the power supplies listed in the Figure above with the system or as spares. The PoE power supply on the Cisco 4000 Series ISRs requires a C15-rated power cable to accommodate the higher current rating of these power supplies.Cisco 4400 Series ISRs (models 4451 and 4431) ship with a default memory of 2 GB of DRAM for the data plane, 4 GB of DRAM for the control plane, and 8 GB of flash memory. The 4 GB DRAM configuration for the control plane is derived by the installation of two symmetrical dual in-line memory modules (DIMMs) of 2 GB in each of the memory slots. The Cisco 4300 Series ISRs (4351, 4331, and 4321) ship with a default memory of 4 GB of DRAM for both the control plane and data plane and 4 GB of flash memory. In the 4351 and 4331, the 4-GB DRAM configuration is derived by the installation of two symmetrical DIMMs of 2 GB in each of the memory slots of the Cisco 4351 and

Page 6: Cisco isr 4000 platform comparison & benefits of migrating to cisco 4000 series

4331 ISR platforms. In the Cisco 4321 ISR, 4 GB of DRAM is soldered on to the motherboard and is not serviceable. When upgrading memory to higher densities, both memory slots must be populated with DIMMs of the same type and density for high system performance. The Cisco 4000 Series platform does not support the use of different DRAM densities in the two available DIMM slots or the use of only one slot.Cisco 4400 ISRs ship with 8 GB of flash memory by default. Cisco 4300 Series ISRs ship with a default 4 GB of flash memory, which is soldered on the motherboard and is not serviceable. On Cisco 4300 Series ISRs, installing an additional flash memory module will disable the onboard flash memory.

Each Cisco 4000 Series ISR ships with a default accessory kit consisting of:

●   19-inch rack-mount brackets

●   Regulatory and Compliance Safety Information (RCSI) guide

The default accessory kit does not include any Category 5 RJ-45 Ethernet cables or cables for the router console or auxiliary port. You can order the console and auxiliary cables as an option during router configuration or as spares. You may order the 23-inch rack-mount brackets, blank faceplates for module slots, and slot dividers as spares.Opacity shields are not required for the Cisco 4000 product family, as the router ships with a solid cover and the router interior is not exposed. Table 9 lists the part numbers for cables, rack-mount brackets, blank faceplates, and storage drivesCisco ISRs deliver innovative technologies running on the industry-leading Cisco IOS Software network operating system. The Cisco 4000 Series ISR family ships with a universal Cisco IOS Software image that contains all the features available for use on the router. A specific feature set is activated by using technology package licenses, such as Security, Unified Communications, and Application Experience licenses.Cisco 4000 Series ISRs support two types of universal images:

Page 7: Cisco isr 4000 platform comparison & benefits of migrating to cisco 4000 series

● Universal images with universalk9 in the image name: This universal image offers all the Cisco IOS Software features, including strong payload cryptography features such as IP Security VPN (IPsec VPN) and Secure Unified Communications.● Universal images with universalk9_npe in the image name: The strong control of encryption capabilities by Cisco Software Activation helps meet U.S. export control requirements for cryptography. However, some countries have import requirements that require that the platform not support any strong payload cryptography. To satisfy the import requirements of those countries, Cisco allows you to order the router with an Non-Payload Encryption ("NPE") universal image. The NPE image does support security features such as zone-based firewall and intrusion prevention through the SECNPE-K9 license.Reference From http://www.networksbaseline.in/2015/12/cisco-isr-4000-series-router.html
