    Lab 1.3.2 Determining Data Storage Capacity

    Objectives Determine the amount of RAM (in MB) installed in a PC. Determine the size of the hard disk drive (in GB) installed in a PC. Determine the used and available space on the hard disk drive (in GB). Check other types of storage devices (floppy, CD-ROM, DVD).

    Step 1: Identify the RAM in a computera. With Windows XP, there are two ways to view control panels: Classic View and Category View. Theoptions available depend on which one of these two views you are using. If you see the Switch toCategory View option on the left, you are currently in the classic view mode. If Switch to ClassicView is displayed, you are currently in Category View mode. For this step, you want to use ClassicView mode.b. From the Start menu, select Control Panel. In the Control Panel, choose System to open the

    System Properties dialog box. Alternatively, you can get this information by clicking the Start buttonand right clicking the My Computer icon. Next, choose Properties from the drop-down menu.The computer operating system and service pack information are listed in the upper part of the dialogbox. The computer processor type, speed, and memory are listed in the lower portion.

    Step 2: Determine the size of the hard disk drivea. Double-click the My Computer icon on your computer desktop. If you do not have a My Computericon, click Start and choose My Computer.b. Right-click the local disk drive under the Hard Disk Drives Section (which is usually the C drive), andselect Properties. This opens the Local Disk Properties dialog box. The total capacity of the hard driveis shown above the Drive C icon.

    Objectives Determine the current screen resolution of a PC monitor. Determine the maximum resolution for the highest color quality. Calculate the number of pixels needed for resolution settings. Identify the type of monitor and graphics card installed.

    Step 1: Determine the current screen resolutiona. To view the current screen resolution and color quality settings, right-click on any empty space on thedesktop and select Properties from the context menu. In the Display Properties window, select theSettings tab.You can also access Display Properties by opening the Control Panel and clicking the Displayicon.

    hertz means the screen is illuminated 60 times per second. Higher refresh rates provide less screenflicker, which reduces eye strain, but may adversely affect the monitor. You should set the refresh rate tothe highest level the monitor can safely support.

    Step 3: Convert host IP addresses

    1. Computer hosts usually have two addresses, an Internet Protocol (IP) addressand an Ethernet Media Access Control (MAC) address. For the benefit ofhumans, the IP address is normally represented as a dotted decimal notation,such as 135.15.227.68. Each of the decimal octets in the address or a mask can beconverted to 8 binary bits. Remember that the computer only understands binary

    bits. If all 4 octets were converted to binary, how many bits would there be?

    Step 7: Manipulate powers of 2 to determine the number of hosts on anetwork

    Binary numbers use two digits, 0 and 1. When you calculate how many hosts can be on asubnetwork, you use powers of two because binary is being used. As an example, wehave a subnet mask that leaves six bits in the host portion of the IP address. In this case,the number of hosts on that network is 2 to the 6th power minus 2 (because you need anumber to represent the network and

    1. number that can be used to reach all the hoststhe broadcast address). Thenumber 2 is always used because we are working in binary. The number 6 is thenumber of bits that are used for the host bits.

    2. On the calculator, in Dec mode, input the number 2. Select the x^ykey, the key

    which raises a number to a power. Input the number 6. Click on the = key, pressEnter on the keyboard, or press the = key on the keyboardall give the total.The number 64 appears in the output. To subtract two, click on the minus (-) keyand then the 2 key followed by the = key. The number 62 appears in the output.This means 62 hosts could be utilized.

    Step 1: Observe DNS conversiona. Click the Start button, select Run, type cmd, and then click OK. The command prompt windowappears.b. At the command prompt, type ping www.cisco.com.     Background / Preparation

    File Transfer Protocol (FTP) is part of the TCP/IP suite. FTP is used to transfer files

    from one network device to another network device. Windows includes an FTPapplication that you can execute from the command prompt. There are also many freeGUI versions of FTP that you can download. The GUI versions are easier to use thantyping from a command prompt.When using FTP, one computer is normally the server and the other computer is theclient. When accessing the server from the client, you need to provide a username andpassword. Some FTP servers have a userID named anonymous. You can access thesetypes of sites by simply typing anonymous for the userID, without a password.Usually, the site administrator has files that can be copied but does not allow files to beposted with the anonymous userID.If your class does not have an FTP server available, you can download and install a

    freeware version, such as Home FTP Server or Cerberus FTP server. The FTP Server ona computer running the CCNA Discovery Live CD may also be used. Another computerwill act as the FTP client by using FTP from the command line, a web browser, ordownload a freeware version of an FTP client, such as SmartFTP Client or Core FTP LEclient. Work in teams of two to complete this lab.The following resources are required:
