CIRCULATORY SYSTEM

Page 2: Circulatory Syste m

Circulatory System:• Organs and tissues that transport essential materials to body cells

and remove waste products• Blood is moved through body by heart pumping

– Picks up nutrients/drops off waste

• Blood travels in 3 Vessles:– Arteries

• Moves blood AWAY from heart– Veins

• Takes blood TO heart– Capillaries

• Tiny tubes that carry blood from the arteries to the body’s cells and then back to the veins

ONCE AGAIN:1. ARTERIES CARRY BLOOD: ???

2. VEINS CARRY BLOOD:???

3. CAPILLERIES ARE: ????

We have over 80,000 miles of blood vessels throughout our body!!!!!!

2 Pathways of the Circulatory System:1. Pulmonary Circulation

-Flow of blood FROM heart TO lungs and back to heart Lungs

-pulmonary arteries carry blood with CO2 away from heart -pulmonary veins carry O2 blood to heart

2. Systemic Circulation - Flow of blood to ALL other body tissue (except lungs)

4 Chambers of Heart Upper Chambers: Atriums

Lower Chambers: Ventricles

BLOOD- Mixture of solids within a liquid-Plasma- Plasma

- 92% water- Transports blood solids, nutrients, hormones, and other

materials- White Bloods Cells

- Helps fight disease and infection by attacking germs that enter the body

- Red Blood Cells- Carry oxygen to cells and carbon dioxide away from them

- Platelets- Help blood form clot at site of wound- Seals a cut and prevents excessive blood loss

BLOODPRESSURE

-PRESSURE THAT IS EXERTED AS BLOOD MOVES THROUGH YOUR BODY AND AGAINST WALLS OF BLOOD VESSELS

1. Systolic Pressure-When BP is at HIGHEST point -As your heart contracts to push blood into arteries

2. Diastolic Pressure- When BP is at its LOWEST point

Blood TypesType A, B, AB, and

O1. Type A blood has

substance A2. B has substance B3. AB has both

substance AB4. Type O has Neither (O- universal donor)

PROBLEMS of the Circulatory System

• Hypertension (blood pressure is higher than normal= heart attack, stoke, kidney failure)

• Stroke (blood clots block vessels in brain or rupture of blood vessel)

• Heart Attack (blockage of blood flow to heart)

• Arteriosclerosis (arteries harden reducing amount of blood flow allowed through)

• Anemia• Leukemia• Hemophilia

How to take Care of Circulatory System

• Limit fat in foods

• Get regular physical activity

• Avoid tobacco• Manage Stress
