Circular Economy
“Linear consumption is reaching its limits. A circular economy has benefits that are
operational as well as strategic, on both a micro-and macroeconomic level. This is a
trillion-dollar opportunity, with huge potential for innovation, job creation and
economic growth.” (World Economic Forum, 2014)

Circular Economy
“A circular economy is an industrial system that is regenerative by intention and design. It
replaces the end-of-life concept with restoration, shifts towards the use of renewable energy,
eliminates the use of toxic chemicals, which impair reuse and return to the biosphere, and
aims for the elimination of waste through the superior design of materials, products, systems
and business models.” (Ellen MacArthur Foundation, 2012 e 2013)
“The art of designing the product life cycle through choices about
product concept, structure, materials and process” (Alting and Legarth, 1995)
Hauschild, M.; Jeswiet, J.; Alting, L. (2005)
Life Cycle Engineering
LCM is a product management
system aiming to minimize
environmental and socio-
economic burdens associated
with an organization´s product
during its entire life cycle and
value chain.
LCM is making life cycle
thinking and product
sustainability operation for
businesses through the
continuous improvements of
product systems.

UNEP, 2007
Eco-innovation
“Eco-innovation is the development and application of a business model,
shaped by a new business strategy that incorporates sustainability
throughout all business operations based on life cycle thinking and in
cooperation with partners across the value chain. It entails a coordinated set
of modifications or novel solutions to products (goods / services), processes,
market approach and organizational structure which leads to a company’s
enhanced performance and competitiveness.” UNEP, 2014
Eco-innovation management: from business model innovation to
business process management
Goal: To develop a guideline for eco-innovation management based on the
inclusion of a set of life cycle management principles, practices and techniques into
business model innovation and business process management.

Environmental Sustainability Proposal for the Strategic
Planning process for Ecoinnovation
Goal: To bring, for the Strategic Planning process, a set of steps, activities and
support tools to help top managers to include environmental sustainability, with a life
cycle perspective, in their strategic decisions.
Methodology includes five case
studies in Brazilian, US and
Swedish organizations
