Cypress pointfirst "e-waste" - (Continued from Cover Page)

Associates in their endeavors for E-Waste. Smith & Associates is the largest independent distributor of computer components in the world. They have been in business for 27-years. Their primary Houston location is just off HWY 290 on Hollister. Not only do they have several offices in various cities in the United States, but they also have offices throughout the entire world. On two previous occasions, I have participated in a similar drive at the Houston Chronicle. It’s a long drive over there. For the first time, however, I will be recycling some of my old computers on July 30 because my previous fears over hard drive information have been alleviated by Smith.

why reCyCle or dispose of e-wAste properly?Electronic equipment has components that leak dangerous and

harmful chemicals into landfills as they deteriorate. Those harmful chemicals potentially threaten aquifers that we depend upon for fresh water. Soil can also be contaminated by the chemicals released. Rainwater runoff spreads these containments. As an example, when Jill and I vacationed on the island of Bonaire three years ago, I found it interesting that the country had a law that required tourists to take any used batteries home with them. You could receive a fine for throwing out the AA or AAA batteries that power that Ipod speaker. As explained on placards in every hotel or apartment the Bonaire government feared contamination of the landfill on their small island. Everyone as old as I am remembers when you did not need to pay a disposal fee for car batteries or tires. Do you have a wooden box cabinet 25” TV’s from 20 years ago? Guess what? There is about 5-pounds of lead in each one!

where does reCyCled MAteriAl Go?Materials that have no value will be disposed of properly, in an

environmentally friendly way. However, some components can be recycled. With their world-wide network most of these out-dated components will wind up in computers sent to developing nations. The computer you used 10-years ago is not powerful enough to

run the modern operating systems or Microsoft Office applications. Nor do they have sufficient memory or space to accommodate today’s software. Surfing the web becomes paddling the pond not surfing. As most of you know I’ve traveled to dozens of countries on nearly every continent. I have seen places in Africa where whole schools of children and their teachers have no exposure whatsoever to computers. For them it is a significant advancement to have the opportunity to use computers that Americans have abandoned as too slow or too outdated.

Does sMith hAve A finAnCiAl risk ACCeptinG e-wAste?

Absolutely. Smith & Associates accepted a financial risk when they agreed to a Cypress Point E-Waste day. The reason is because they have agreed to take and properly dispose of several types of E-waste items that do not have the ability for salvation. An example would be an old CRT monitor that will cost Smith at least $5 to dispose of properly. Even with proper functionality, a CRT monitor is so heavy that the shipping cost to transport to a developing nation creates more loss than when they recycle a CRT monitor elsewhere in the world. Smith hopes the recycling of old and outdated computer parts will exceed their cost of environmentally friendly disposals.

let’s All pArtiCipAte And Get rid of e-wAste!If you have E-waste items taking up space in a closet or under your

desk, I urge you to bring them to our First Annual E-Waste Day. Pending upon how well it goes on July 30, we may or may not be able to host an event like this every year. None of our 1,198 homes are more than 2 or 3 minutes from the Barker Cypress Re creation Center. We have made it very convenient to shed that E-waste in an environmentally friendly way. The Smith & Associates employees will even unload the items from your vehicle onto their truck. Smith told me that they are looking forward to your participation so take advantage of their services catered for you!

Cypress pointin his age groups at Pentathlon, and other invitational meets and has qualified for the highest invitational meet, Ponderosa, and placed in the top of his age category in all 5 swim events for high point. Matt spent time on summer during high school in Washington, D.C. as part of a Youth Leadership Initative. For 2 weeks high schoolers from all over the country participated in different leadership programs. Matt has been active in Youth Group at his church and area youth groups, his main focus being service to the community in getting together friends to do yard work for a widow in our church. He has also served for the past two years as a Junior Volunteer Firefighter with Station 4. His leisure time is spent working on his Chevy Silverado truck along with his Chocolate Lab, named, yes, Chevy!!! Matt would say that his life, maturity and focus has been heavily influenced by having a little brother who is no-verbal and who has autism and epilepsy. Through that, he has learned what truly matters in life. Matt would say that perhaps one of the greatest moments of his high school years was getting to personally meet and have lunch with his hero, Marcus Luttrell, the Navy SEAL who was the Lone Survivor of Operation Red Wing and who wrote the bestselling book, “Lone Survivor”. Matt’s plans after graduation include Navy Boot Camp in the Fall, and a Navy/Civilian career in Computer Cryptography.

With his ASVAB academic test scores being in the top 95% of the Nation, he was recruited for the Navy’s Nuclear Engineering program, but his hearts is set to be a Navy SEAL one day. He has qualified to do that, and has signed a Navy SEAL Candidate contract to attend BUD/S training early in 2012. He has a bright future ahead if he keeps his focus as well as he has though high school. We are so very proud of you, Matt!! Love Mom, Dad and Brandon, too!

FACTS YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT DROWNING

For more information, check out our website at

www.colinshope.org

Most children are out of sight or missing for less than 5 minutes and usually in the presence of 1 or both parents.

NO ONE is “drown proof” – no matter their level of swimming ability.

Falls, entrapments, and injuries lead to drowning regardless of swimming level.

5min

Drowning can occur in less than 2 minutes.

Most children die who are submerged for as little as 6-10 minutes.

Irreversible brain damage can occur in 4 minutes or less.

2min 4min 6min

Children who drown may not scream, splash, or struggle. They can silently slip beneath the water, even with adults & lifeguards present.

DROWNING IS QUICK AND SILENT

DROWNING CAN STILL OCCUREVEN IF YOU KNOW HOW TO SWIM

Typically more children drown in JULY than in any other month!
