VET staff go back to schoolNine VET staff at Hampton became students again.

Staff who deliver qualifications were required to complete two new Units of Competency to upgrade their TAFE Certificate IV. This qualification along with Industry Specific qualifications enables staff to deliver national qualifications to school students. As a result Hampton staff are able to deliver Certificate I,II and III qualifications to students in IT, Business , Sport & Fitness, and Beauty. Students can choose training pathways in these qualifications leading to further training at TAFE, Private Training Providers and University.

These staff members are also required to maintain their industry experience which is done in their own time. Delivery of these courses at Hampton combined with the WIPT PROGRAM enables Hampton students to achieve attainment towards their WACE.

In 2017 Year 12 students exited Hampton SHS with 138 qualifications gaining 100 % attainment and increasing the future options for employment or further study.

Thank you to all the VET staff for the work they do in training our students

Lemonade StallAs part of Certificate II Business courses, the Year 11 students have conducted a lemonade stall business. The requirements included choosing their business name, logo, stall holders’ name badges and then devising a secret recipe for lemonade that would give them a competitive edge over the other five businesses. All staff and students actively participated tasting various lemonades and provided feedback on their product and service.

Health ExpoAt the end of Term 3 Mr Brookes Year 12 General Health Studies class presented a Health Expo to students in Years 7 & 8. The display was set up in the gym and the students could peruse the stalls and ask the Year 12s questions related to the display and other health issues.

Robert Jenkins MuralIn Term 3 Perth artist and illustrator Robert Jenkins (@theblackmountains) used his highly recognizable style to transform the school canteen. Repeated leaf motifs cover almost every surface creating a sense of movement and excitement in the space. Students have enthusiastically spent time searching for Jenkins’ iconic blue characters that are dotted around cheekily getting up to mischief. The canteen is now a bright welcoming area for students to enjoy their lunch and part of the continued beautification of the school.

Student Services MuralA new mural is underway in Student Services. Designed by Perth artist Samantha Lee who ran a workshop for students earlier in the year, the mural depicts the school logo of the red griffin. Painted by students the griffin’s wings showcase the different subjects and activities on offer at Hampton Senior High School. See updates on the painting of the mural by following our Arts Instagram account: @hamptonshsarts

Art Room MakeoverOver the past two years Visual Arts students have been transforming the art room to create a colourful, dynamic space. Students reproduced the works of iconic artists from both history and contemporary art on boards that have become our new tabletops and cupboard door panels. Students noted that they learnt a lot about the artist’s whose works have been appropriated and now have a clear understanding of the artist’s work and techniques. Being surrounded by famous artworks as they produce their own works offers inspiration and a brighter more welcoming space to learn.

ICT @ HamptonThere is much to celebrate as Term 4 rushes to the end of the school year. Many of our Year 12 VET students successfully completed Certificate III in Business or Certificate III in Information, Digital Media and Technology or both! Students often continue their studies at TAFEs at higher levels such as Certificate IV or Diploma level. Well done to the students and the teachers who encouraged and supported them, Mr Akella and Mr Thirlwell. This year we also had classes in Applied Information Technology and Computer Science in Year 12 and we wish our students the very best in their aspirations for university.

Back at school, Term 4 was trying new things.

The Year 10 Graphics class created computer games using the Unity engine and were so engaged with their work, it was difficult to know if you could actually call it work!

Year 9 Graphics class engaged with the new animation kits, working together to produce some interesting short clips.

The Year 7 Specialist class designed and created games in Scratch, but took it a step further. The games had an educational focus – water conservation, food production and waste disposal.

They were excited to learn that isometrics (in Maths) can help them design 3D objects with greater accuracy and many of them printed them on our 3D printer.

Year 9 ASP and ICT Specialist students worked on a combined project and participated at the FIRST Lego League competition on Sunday 12 November. They came away with the Research award. Congratulations, team and Mr Thirlwell and Ms Bravos.

During a brief visit from the Premier and local member of parliament, students in the ICT Centre confidently explained their projects, their learning and clearly understood the purpose behind them.

A small team of four delivered a presentation at a teachers’ workshop (TeachMeetWA) at Scitech. Developing confidence in learning and communicating with others while working in a team is a keystone of the specialist program and students, so we are very proud of these volunteers.

Teachers didn’t miss out on learning new things either. With a greater focus on collaboration and STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Maths) principles there was much fun and creativity.

Our final session in our first year as a Dojo (for CoderDojo) was on 15 November. This colourful group became regulars under the mentorship of Dr Richard Van Proctor (EdConnect School Volunteer) and teachers Ms Bravos and Ms D’Cunha. We hope to continue with the program in 2018 and primary schools will receive information early in Term 1, 2018.

Primary STEM ChallengeHampton Senior High School invited a total of 12 Year 5 students from Anzac Terrace, Hampton Park and Eden Hill Primary Schools to participate in the inaugural Hampton SHS Primary STEM challenge. The students were nominated by their classroom teachers to represent their school in a suite of activities related to Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM). The two hour sessions contained specifically tailored activities to develop skills in teamwork, problem solving, communication and innovative thinking. The students undertook a series of building tasks using electric motors and Lego that demonstrated mechanical concepts such as levers, pall and ratchets, gears and gear ratios in engaging applications such as a drag racer, fishing rod and Star Wars style “walker”.

The culmination of the challenge saw the students apply and integrate the skills and understanding gained in the previous sessions. The final challenge: to design and construct a machine capable of lifting the largest weight possible over a distance without the electric motor stalling. The final testing was tense as the students showcased their designs and tested their lifting capacity in front of parents and school representatives. The teams all provided unique solutions to the problem and

the winning machine proved that looks can be deceiving! The winning team members were awarded prizes, but all of the STEM challengers gained from the experience.

After such a successful prototype, Hampton SHS will be expanding the STEM challenge to more primary schools in 2018.

Lego LeagueOn Sunday 12 November, 12 Year 9 students from the Specialist ICT and Applied Science Programs travelled to the Perth Regional finals of the FIRST Lego League Tournament. The competition, run by Macquarie University, Google and Lego, aims to promote critical thinking skills alongside the core values of the tournament - discovery, integration, inclusion and ‘coopertition’ (cooperation with competitors). This year’s theme was Hydrodynamics, revolving around the use of water by humans. Teams had to compete across three challenges; a robotics challenge, research project and a presentation on the core values.

The project had to address the human water cycle and present an innovative solution to a problem we face. The team’s ocean dehumidifier model impressed judges, demonstrating how we could get fresh drinking water from the air over the ocean. In the core values section, the team had to present a poster addressing the values, as well as answering questions from a panel. An unexpected teamwork challenge saw them needing to make a structure using only their bodies, and the group worked quickly and effectively, making a horse and cart before the panel.

After the first of three rounds of the robotics challenge, Team Hampton was leading the scoreboard, however a stellar second round from other teams saw us needing a score of 95 for our final run. We were all biting our nails for the first module and it should be noted that the team completed challenges worth 140 points on this round, but a combination of a broken obstacle and missing the buzzer by 1 second left us falling short of our goal.

The closing ceremony saw Team Hampton win the first award of the day –the Research Award. Our project was the most well researched of all the 36 entrants. The team was absolutely thrilled as they proudly accepted the Lego trophy. The students are to be commended on being an absolute credit to our school. Their professionalism, teamwork and support of one another were recognised by the judges and they all put in a fabulous effort. We’re looking forward to entering the competition again in 2018!

Physical Activities

WA Athletics Schools Knockout ChampionshipsHampton had five teams compete at this event. All athletes performed exceptionally and were complimented by other schools on the school spirit and sportsmanship shown.

Final placings: Senior boys 1st, Junior boys 3rd, Junior girls (7A) 9th, Junior girls (7B) 13th and Junior girls 8 finished 10th.

Interschool AthleticsHampton competed in the B Grade carnival in October. Congratulations to all competitors who showed great team spirit supporting their peers and stepping up to fill events as required. Special mention goes to Sarah Burke and Jade Smith from the Year 7 Athletics Academy who competed in the Year 9 events. We had some terrific individual results as listed:

Kyah Chirichilli - third place in the Year 7 GirlsIzzak Bolton - Runner Up Champion Boy Year 7Connor Hill - third place in the Year 10 BoysCaitlin Hill - Runner Up Champion Upper School Girls

WA All Schools Athletics ChampionshipsWell done to Izzak Bolton and David Catley who represented Hampton at these Championships. Izzak finished 5th in the U/14 boys 1500 m with a personal best time. David won the U/18 boys triple jump and finished 3rd in the long jump. David has been selected to represent WA in Adelaide at the Australian All Schools Championships in December. Congratulations – hopefully a selection in an Australian team is in David’s future.

Year 7 Netball Two teams demonstrated enthusiasm, respect and great sportsmanship throughout the carnival. It was hot and sunny throughout the day, where friends and family cheered for our teams from the sidelines.

Team 1 played in the Silver division and were assisted by coach and umpires Sheldyn Cooper and Tanya Johnson. This team was very successful, only losing two games during the carnival, where a higher percentage in goals was enough to see the girls become Runners Up. Team 2 managed a couple of wins in the Green division, with all the girls putting in 100% effort while having fun and Chanel Ririnui, Sonicta Oukrin and Breeanna Harris assisted the girls.

Year 7 BasketballHampton was represented by two teams. The Division A side played particularly well and as a result finished the tournament with a fantastic third place, just narrowly missing out on a place in the grand final by a couple of points. Izzak Bolton’s effort, all day, was pretty hard to overlook and he stood out across all divisions for his defensive play.

Divison B toiled hard all day, but unfortunately finished just outside the top four. It was evident that the boys had not played together, however, once the boys talked it over and came up with team strategies their performances vastly improved for the remainder of the tournament. Offensively, Kurt Cosford performed admirably by giving the team plenty of points from both underneath the rim and out in transition. Well done boys and thanks to the enthusiastic coaches/umpires.

Year 7 Soccer Two teams played with great enthusiasm and sportsmanship while looking the part with their red socks pulled high, shin pads and boots. Team A won the competition winning all seven matches, defeating one school by a massive 16 goals to 2. A special mention goes to Orhan Boric who scored the highest number of individual goals throughout the entire competition. Team B finished 6th out of 10 teams, up against some tough competition. Both teams showed independence, respect and great skills throughout the course of a successful day. The future looks bright for soccer at Hampton. Well done boys.

Another great year has been had by all Bushranger Cadets. Term 3 saw, amongst other things a visit from Radical Reptiles where we had a presentation on snakes and lizards and what to do when you encounter one in the wild. Once the Cadets had learned about the best way to handle reptiles, they were given an opportunity to hold one of the non-venomous snakes that had been brought along.

Part of John Holland’s contract with the Northlink road construction project was to ensure there were sufficient nesting opportunities for birds. They offered to provide materials and support for the Cadets to construct nesting boxes. A total of 15 boxes were built, six for Pink and Greys, five for Owls and five for Parrots. The boxes were handed over in the first week of Term 4. Once installed the Cadets will visit the site to see the boxes in place and be shown the rest of the environmental restoration work on the project

Term 4 saw preparation for our Presentation Evening during our first few weeks. On Thursday 9 November we started with drill practice, followed by pizza and drink and then welcomed our families. Several Cadets presented information detailing what had been done over the year and then certificates/awards were presented.

Bushranger Cadets

Siofra Clarke Siofra had a wonderful week in Byron Bay with the WA All Nations State Team, and they had some spectacular successes. The girls won five of their six preliminary games, holding the top spot on the leader board throughout the championships. They made it in to the Grand Final which was a stellar achievement, however Friday the 13th proved unlucky for WA as Victoria were the stronger team on the last day. The National Diversity Championships encompasses the Australia Post AFL National Under-15 All Nations Cup (for footballers of multicultural backgrounds) and the Rio Tinto AFL National Under-15 Kickstart program (for Indigenous footballers).

Isaac DechIsaac is a very talented basketballer who went to Melbourne last July in the State U/16 team which unfortunately just missed making the playoffs. Isaac has the chance to show off his skills again as he has now been selected to represent WA in the U/18 team which will compete in Melbourne in December. We wish Isaac every success and hope he and his team mates win this tournament.

WABIADThe Write-a-book-in-a-day competition (WABIAD) is a significant event on the Hampton Senior High School calendar. The last two years, following the impetus of the WABIAD, the Hampton English Department has conducted a Literature Festival, inviting local authors and illustrators to conduct workshops with the students. The philosophy is that English should be viewed as a fun subject.

This year Hampton entered seven teams comprising seventy students, a record for the school. Illustrating and creative writing workshops are conducted regularly in the lead up to the event each

Our four Year 12 FTD students represented the school with absolute class at a large event held at the Cottesloe Hotel – the 20th Anniversary of the Graham “Polly” Farmer Foundation (the foundation which developed and continue to co-manage the Follow the Dream program).

Some of the many dignitaries at the event included Ben Wyatt MLA, Peter Tinley MLA, Steven Baxter from DOE, Managers from Rio Tinto, Woodside and Wesfarmers and the wonderful Hon Fred Chaney, Senior Australian of the Year 2014. Another credit to our school was that our 2016 graduate, Brianne Yarran, was invited to MC the event, as well as perform her 2016 ATAR dance solo,

Aussie LanguageSome Yr 7 classes are reading the novel, Red Dog in English.......and LOVING IT. The legend of Tally Ho, later known as Red Dog, lives on in this wonderful story. There’s so much Aussie slang in it though, that we simply had to learn some new lingo-that’s Aussie for language. Let’s see how you fare:

Dingbat, lino, middy/pint, ute, dero, barbie, yakka, drongo, dunny, drive-ins

OR perhaps you know some of these?

as mad as a cut snake, a few roos loose in the top paddock, a few cartons short of a six-pack,

dropped a bomb

Aussie slang is a cracker lingo, ya reckon?

and she did a brilliant job! Our students mingled with the guests throughout the evening and shared their many experiences as Hampton SHS and FTD students.

Seb’s day finished on the same high note it began when he found himself engrossed in a half an hour conversation with Hon Fred Chaney, discussing the many intricacies of life. Fred gave Seb his card and wants to continue the conversation in the very near future!

A special thanks to Mr Beaton for making Sebastian Critti-Schnaars’ year by gifting him with ‘the guitar.’ Seb was blown away and has committed to returning in the future with a playlist of songs for all of us to enjoy.

Follow the Dream

year, building friendship groups and team dynamics. The school library is the scene of an intense set of creative think tanks.

On Friday November 10, Hampton Senior High School hosted the WABIAD Presentation Afternoon Tea, where 130 students, teachers, principals and parents from numerous Perth schools gathered to celebrate the achievements of the 250 Western Australian teams who entered, each creating a book in a day from the initial planning through to writing, illustrating and publishing. On the day Team Toos from Hampton SHS were excited to receive an award for Best Illustrations in the Middle School Division.
