Important notice:Do not ever tire of praying for priests, especially at this time when it seems that all the

powers of evil have come down on the world, attacking in particular the sacred ministers ofthe Lord. Pray that they stay faithful, that they be holy, that they, ultimately,

be nothing more (and nothing less) than what they are called to be: “Alter Christus”.

My Dear Friends:

These words, proclaimed bythe angels to the shepherds inBethlehem, filled them with joy. Theyimmediately set out to adore the Kingof kings, offering Him their poor gifts.

For us, as missionaries,Christmas is a time of great rejoicingevery year not only because we canadore Jesus in the manger but alsobecause we can see him in the faces ofso many children that are born in theircold shacks, without adequate clothing, without clean drinking water, andwithout electric lights. They simply lieon damp and unhygienic llama andsheep skins thrown on the floor.

Jesus continues to be born poor. There is no room for Him in the inns orin decent homes. Worse yet, he isrejected and threatened with deathbecause his mere presence disturbs andbothers the powerful who fear that Hecan really resolve the problems of thepoor, because this could put thenational and international economy incrisis.

Jesus is the one who is continuallypersecuted in the high Andes and inmany other countries of the ThirdWorld. Often, He is even killed, whilelooking for the land that was taken

from him.

Those in power in the Andes ofPeru, did not offer people better, saferland even though they saw that therecent floods destroyed many villagesbuilt on swamp land. Doing so mayhave prevented them from taking theiryearly holiday trips to Europe or theUnited States.

For us missionaries, it is a great joyto be with Him every day and alleviateHis suffering. It has been a blessing tobe able to serve the poor during thefloods last January.

Because of the downpour, many ofthe poor have been left without notonly a shack to live in but without thebare necessities to survive.

It has brought me great joy to servethem in everything, and to activelyengage each one of the members of theMovement to the best of their abilitiesin this labour.

Glory to God in the highest, and peace

to His people on earth!

most poor) had been accepted by all ofthe youth that God in his goodness doesnot tire of calling . . . the suffering of somany brothers of the Third Worldwould have been less.

This experience teaches me thatGod generously offers this gift to manyyoung people, but many of them do not.to accept the cross. Later in their life, however, they come across crosses theynever expected to find, ones that aremuch heavier. I am a witness of the sadend many of these young people cometo.

Others have closed themselves upby building a closed spiritual routine:two hours of volunteer work inretirement homes, pilgrimages toMedjugorje, etc. They engage incommendable initiatives, but in theircase they are simply putting obstaclesto our Lord’s presence in their lives, apresence that would make them true

messengers of the Gospel among themost poor and the ones thirsty for theWord of God.

Saying “yes” to the Lord meansgiving Him not only your heart but alsoyour lips, your hands, and your feet, sothat He can act in us in His, as I wouldsay, mysterious and great power.

It has been so beautiful towitness how our young missionarieshave brought the Gospel message tosome villages where there was onlyhate for the Catholic Church fed by thesects, and where now the Good Newshas been accepted and it has alsoimproved the quality of their societies!

It is my sincere wish that these(and other) young people who haveheard God’s call understand that thegreatest sin they could commit wouldbe to refuse to serve the poor.

The future of the poor of theAndes and the Third World does notdepend on those in authority who, aswe know, are often far from God. Thefuture of the poor depends on thedecisions young people who believethat Jesus continues to be born andsuffers with the poorest make.

To the youth and to all of thosewho love the poor I would like to repeatPope Benedict XVI’s words at WorldYouth Day in Cologne: “I would like totell everyone unceasingly: Open yourheart to God! Let yourself be surprisedby Christ. Give Him the right to talk toyou during these days. Open the doorsof your freedom to His merciful love . .. (. . .). Make no mistake: Christ doesn’ttake anything away that is beautifuland great in us, rather he takeseverything to perfection for the glory ofGod, the happiness of man and the

salvation of the world.”

He continued, “The world awaits, today as yesterday, the Easterannouncement of hope, the joy ofknowing that death has beenconquered forever, and that a manfreely offered and has paid for theresurrection of us all. God today waitsfor our “yes” so that the impact of thisannouncement reaches everyone, poorand rich alike, teachers and illiterates, good and bad.”

From the bottom of my heart, toyou my friends and benefactors, all ofour children and our missionaries wishyou a very merry Christmas and ahappy New Year!

I was born in Novara, Piamonte, (in Italy)and I have always lived in a town nearthis city called Cameri. I was brought upin the faith thanks to my family, myparish, my chapel, prayer and reading thelives of the Saints.

I believe that in my heart I wasalways attracted to the missionary life, but I grew especially inclined to it in mylate adolescence. A friend of mine and Iagreed that ‘real life’ awaited in thesouthern part of the world. We did noteven know what we meant by ‘real life’but we were certain that it was somethinggreat, beautiful and entirely differentfrom the other great and beautiful thingswe were used to. I remember that when Isaw some pictures in a missionarymagazine or a documentary on TV about

countries in the Third World, I felt astrong desire to be there too, workinghand-in-hand with those poor people.Maybe it was only a desire for adventureor a wish to have new experiences ratherthan real fraternal charity, but even so, Ithank the Lord for putting that sensitivityin my heart. It is a sensitivity that needed(and still needs to be) purified. I had noidea that one day these dreams wouldcome true.

The Lord, in His mercy, came to meetme in a spectacular yet simple anddiscreet way – a way known only toHimself.

In the year 2000, the Year of theGreat Jubilee, I challenged myself to takea trip (which I paid for) to a mission in

the priest in charge for this missionvery well and a benefactor of themission. My parents and I had had theopportunity to meet them during themissionary priest’s brief stay in Italy. Istill ask myself if those days in that faraway, forgotten country beaten by thewind and dust, were only a dream or if,on the contrary, they were something Iactually experienced. I would go so faras to say that those days were days ofParadise to me.

When I came back, I lived time inecstatic joy for some, but when themoment to come back down to earthand try to do something concretearrived, I acted like a child who doesnot want to go home when they areplaying and I followed my whims. I lettime pass trying to convince myself thatsomething would happen, and Idecided not to do anything. Missionwas my great desire, but it was alsosomething that inspired great fear in

me. I also thought there were otherthoughts and desires in my mind andheart. In other words, I was lazy andselfish. I was like the servant in theparable of the talents. The quiet callingnever went out entirely, however, and Iwas in great misery.

In 2007, I was able to live anotherbeautiful missionary experience inNigeria. The experience took place afterI had attended a lovely preparationcourse designed for this visit. Asunhappy as I was when I eventuallyfinished my time there, I still was notready to leave everything behind for themissionary life.

The perfect opportunity came whenI found out about the possibility ofspending an entire year in a mission inPeru with the Missionaries of theServants of the Poor of the ThirdWorld. This way I could also try it andsee if this was truly the type of life for

Brother Vincenzo Pierri (first on the right), with the otherseminarians, giving catechism classes in Ajofrin (Toledo, Spain).

9

I had heard about this Movementthrough the same lady who had invitedme to visit the Patagonia mission (it istrue that God does not leave anythingup to chance!) and she alwaysencouraged me to be the best I could beand to be brave. In fact, one day she puta pamphlet called “MarriedMissionaries” in my hand. I found thissame pamphlet a few days later in astore of religious objects next to a shrineI went to visit with my mother and mysister. I had never heard about thisMovement and suddenly, within acouple days, I had already stumbledacross it twice.

I read the booklet, visited theMovement’s website, and I called theirhead office in Italy, which is not very farfrom my hometown, to arrange ameeting with one of their priests. Idecided to spend on this mission andremain open to every possibility. WhenI met Father Walter, I received my coupde grace. While I spoke to him, I startedto see myself in a plane, ready to startthis adventure with God.

In the Movement’s home in Cusco,I saw how priests and brothers carriedout their work with children and youngboys. I was also inserted into the normalactivities little by little. It is alwaysinstructive to be with children who, asMother Teresa said, are our bestteachers: they are natural, simple, andalways have the desire to do something,to be happy. I found this to be truedespite the painful background many ofthese children came from.

Obviously, it is not always easy. Youhave to struggle against impulses suchas laziness, rivalries, etc. In short, youhave to know how to teach them andyou need to do it with kindness andpatience. In this way, they have been myteachers, making me understand howmuch I still need to improve in thesetwo virtues. The missionary life isrooted in prayer, especially in HolyMass, and it is from this life of prayerthat you find the energy and motivationto keep going.

I also had the opportunity to spenda week in a mission in one of thenumerous small towns lost in the Andesmountains. I have seen how poorpeople live a hard and miserable life. They are, in general, reserved peoplewhose trust you need to earn.Nevertheless, they are very hospitable. Ihave seen that they have a great respectfor priests. They expect his blessing forthem, their houses, and their animals.

For the children it was a great

celebration and they were overjoyed bybeing able to play football with a ballthat was not flat. It was here especiallythat I strongly desired to be aninstrument of God for them.

This is why I am here today, inthe House of Priestly Formation inAjofrin (in the province of Toledo,Spain). I ask you to pray that I will carryout the will of God, which is always thebest of all. And for every one of you Idesire . . . all of the best!

To thee, O blessed Joseph,do we come in our tribulation,

and having implored the help of thy most holy Spouse,we confidently invoke thy patronage also.

Through that charity which bound theeto the immaculate Virgin Mother of God

and through the paternal love with which thou embraced the Child Jesus,

we humbly beg thee to graciously regard the inheritance which Jesus Christ has purchased

by His Blood, and with thy power and strength to aid us in our necessities.

O most watchful Guardian of the Holy Family,defend the chosen children of Jesus Christ;

O most loving father, ward off from us every contagion of error and corrupting influence;

O our most mighty protector, be propitious to us and from heaven assist us

in our struggle with the power of darkness;

and, as once thou rescued the Child Jesus from deadly peril,so now protect God's Holy Church

from the snares of the enemy and from all adversity;shield, too, each one of us by thy constant protection,

so that, supported by thy example and thy aid,we may be able to live piously, to die holy, and to obtain eternal happiness in heaven.

Amen.

My dear friends, I have theopportunity to be able to share with youthe immense joy that overwhelms me.This year the Lord gave me the greatgrace to make my Perpetual SolemnVows. It is my complete and eternalsurrender to the Lord who, in Hisinfinite goodness, saved me from the“land of Egypt,” land of slavery: a slaveto myself, a slave to my plans, a slave tomaterial and physical well-being. Hetook me to the Promised Land, that is,my vocation as a Missionary SisterServant of the Poor of the Third World. There I found the three pillars of myvocation: the Cross, the Eucharist, andthe Virgin Mary. Based upon these

things I live my daily life with the joy ofa child of God.

When I was discerning my vocationto the religious life, a priest said to me,‘A woman’s vocation to the religious lifeis an assent to motherhood.’ When Iheard the call of the Lord to be Hisspouse for the first time, though, itsaddened me to know that I would nothave children ‘born from my womb.’But the female religious life has thismaternal spiritual dimension: yes, wehave to renounce human love that couldbe fruitful with children, but werenounce this so that we can giveourselves to the divine love that brings

to love is to give everything you have, including yourself

Sister Benedicta María Kauffmann, M.S.P. (French)

forth a much larger number of spiritualchildren.

I personally was not aware of myvocation to the religious life when I waslittle. I planned to get married andsanctify myself with my husband andchildren, but this was not the will ofGod. However, the Lord gave me “ahundredfold” for this dream ofmaternity and fertility and I am verythankful! Instead of giving me a familywith 5 or 10 children, He gave me onewith hundreds of children made up ofHis poor and helpless. We feel thehappiness and grace that comes frombeing able to hold baby Jesus in ourarms daily the in the abandoned andorphaned babies and invalid childrenwe take in at the St Teresa of Jesushome.

It is a marvelous road which we haveto walk to arrive to this great day of ourwedding with Christ (the PerpetualVows): the day of our complete devotionto our Husband in the service to thepoorest. This the essence of ourvocation as Missionary Sister Servantsof the Poor of the Third World.

For me this walk began the 6th ofJanuary 2005 with my entrance into thecommunity, after listening to theinsistent call of the Lord inviting me toserve the poor. The date of my entrancewas very significant for me: theEpiphany, day of the arrival of the Lord. That day the Lord arrived in me.

The first phase of this life of specialconsecration was the taking of thePostulant’s Cross in February of that

14

same year. As a postulant I was sohappy to be serving the children of theHome, of going to the mission villagesand tending to the people, both at aspiritual level and at a the physical level, soothing their pain and healing theirwounds.

The Novitiate was the next step andwith it the acceptance of the habit. Manypeople are surprised that some humanbeings can renounce the union betweenman and woman in matrimony, those ofus in religious orders live a spiritualengagement that fulfills us completely. We have a Groom who never gets angry, who is never in a bad mood, who alwayswaits for you and loves you, even whenyou have distanced yourself a little fromHim . . . this is what we discover duringour Novitiate.

The day of making my First Vowsarrived. I do not think that I had ever

had such a great and emotional daybefore the 12th of October 2006. Ithought I was dreaming because itseemed unreal that God, our Creator, could lower Himself to marry one of Hiscreatures. My voice trembled. I did notknow whether I would be able to readthrough the text with my obligations. Thanks to God I had seven Sistersmaking their first vows with me as well, and we were able to get to the end. Thatday we received the Crucifixcharacteristic of the members of theMovement, the expression of our unionwith Christ Crucified and also with ourcharism. On the Crucifix is written:“Whatever you do for the least of Mybrothers and sisters, you do for Me.”

Last October 12th was an even morefantastic day, the day of my PerpetualVows. It is the wedding I had beenpreparing for from the first day I enteredthe community of the Sisters. With the

Sister Benedicta, msp, with orphan children from the “Saint Theresa of Jesus” home.

15

simple vows we have the grace toenjoythis Novitiate with Christ, but thisis confirmed and comes to its fulfillment(the marriage) with the Perpetual Vows.During these years I have been givenresponsibility over the Novitiate: I canprepare Novices to make their simplevows and see God work in their souls. This responsibility is a great grace fromGod for me, and it has allowed me tokeep the enthusiasm of my first vowsalive and reach my Perpetual Vows withthis same enthusiasm augmented andrefreshed.

I entrust myself to your prayers sothat I will always be faithful to Christ myHusband and live out the vows that Ihave pronounced once and for all fromthe evangelistic counsel. I put everythingin the hand of the Holy Virgin Mary, mother of the poor, your Mother andmine, last October 12th on the feast ofOur Lady of the Pillar. I pray for all thepeople who support us spiritually andmaterially, and ask that the Lord returnsto them “a hundredfold” what they dofor us and for our poor. “Renounce allthings, and thou shalt find all things.”(The Imitation of Christ, Book 3,Chapter 32)

St John Bosco(Feast Day: 31 January)

Rev. Pierfilippo Giovanetti, msp Saint John Bosco was born on the

16th of August in 1815 in Castelnuovod’Asti and spent most of his life inTorino, where he died on 31st of January1888.

He wrote that an event that markedthe rest of his life was a “dream when Iwas nine years old” in which the Lordshowed him what his field of ministrywould be: the youth of the lower classesin Torino. During the IndustrialRevolution these youths foundthemselves living in conditions of abjectpoverty and in grave moral danger. Hehad to win them over “not with blows, but with gentleness and kindness,” andhe had our Mother of Heaven as histeacher.

After having been ordained a priest,Don Bosco started to occupy himselfwith that abandoned youth. He began byteaching them the catechism and whenthe group grew he initiated them in theadventure of the Prayer of Saint Francisof Sales, in the Torino ghetto ofValdocco. The Chapel already existedand Don Bosco made it into a placewhere the youth felt welcome and werein a family atmosphere. They receivedboth catechetical and human formationas well as Christian development whichwould help them become “good citizensand Christian saints.”

Some of the young people DonBosco helped had a reputation for beingjuvenile delinquents or children whowould never be able to aspire to morethan a life of delinquency. Because ofthis the Saint faced opposition from thecivil authorities right from the beginningof his plans, and even a lack of

understanding from the ecclesialauthorities.

He died in poverty, in a poor room, surrounded by a great number of theyoung people he had devoted his entirelife to, but not without first havingfounded the congregation Saint Francisof Sales (from here the popular name“Salesians”) and the Daughters of MaryHelp of Christians, with the aim ofhelping children and youth of the entireworld.

Father Giovanni Salerno alwaysurges us, as Missionary Servants of thePoor of the Third World, to know the lifeand educational system of Don Bosco. His Preventive System is based on threepillars: love (teach young people in afamily atmosphere and with friendship, where they can feel truly loved), reason(help them to develop their ownintelligence in school and at work), andreligion (take them to Christ, so thatthey discover their own dignity: that ofbeing children of God).

In our educational work we have oureyes fixed on the figure of this great saintand, like him, we also put ourselvesunder the maternal protection of Mary.

shared with those who suffer.

Young people who are searching and who,

during a year of experience in the Third World,

are inclined to discern with an open heart, and

are willing to listen to what mission the Lord is

calling them.

From The World

The funds sent by the developed countries to combatmalnutrition have not changed in seven years, according to thereport “Malnutrition: How much has been spent? An analysis ofthe financial flows in favor of the fight against malnutritionbetween 2004 and 2007,” presented in Rome by DoctorsWithout Borders (MSF). The funds are equivalent to the mere3% of the yearly amount needed to prevent the deaths of between3.5 and 5 million children under the age of five due tomalnutrition. The report analyzes the lack of funding in aworldwide effort that would lower cases of malnutrition amongchildren (a condition that weakens children’s defensemechanisms and increases their risk of death from pneumonia, diarrhea, malaria, measles, and AIDS).

Developed countries only spend $350 million a year but theWorld Bank calculates that $12.5 billion is necessary toadequately combat malnutrition in the 36 countries that suffermost from malnutrition and in the 32 countries that are at a highrisk.

MSF has used data from the Organization for EconomicCooperation and Development, from the European Commission, from the Gates Foundation and from UNITAID to analyzesources of funding. Although thousands of dollars ofinternational aid have been classified under “nutritionalassistance for the development and food safety” or “emergencyfood aid,” less that 2% of this is spent effectively on projects thatare specifically aimed at reducing infant malnutrition.

Moreover, according to the report from the M.S.P., theexisting funds are wasted as a result of of inefficient policies thatdirect food aid in kind, which increases costs by $600 millionrather than following policies whereby good would be acquiredlocally. The authors of the report also state that governmentscould improve dietary aid by introducing food that was moreexpensive but more nutritionally suited to the needs of youngerchildren.

“Reverend Father Giovanni, thank you very much for your letter . . . I really liked

the Christmas pamphlet and the DVD you sent me, which I have watched more

than once. I’m enclosing a small donation, half of my pension, but given with

much love. I am also donating my sacrifice for Lent. I was really impressed with

your missionary work! And with your Pamphlet and your DVD. I have kept every

pamphlet since I received the first one. This last one is much better but I imagine

that the expenses have increased a lot.

I give thanks to God because there are still many young people who devote

themselves to the Lord in service of the poor. I commit myself to doing everything

I can to raise awareness your work.”

fernanda, from Portugal.

“I still have Father Salerno’s letter before me . . . It’s true that missionaries in love

with the Gospel are needed. We pray for vocations every day. We pray for the

Missionary Servants of the Poor of the Third World in Peru, but also for the poor,

that is, for ourselves . . . I’m happy to see that Father Salerno says that money is

not the essential problem. To tell a person with an empty stomach that he is loved

by God is not believable. I am enclosing a cheque for material necessities . . . I give

thanks to God because He has given me the pleasure to share and to believe in His

Word.”
