CIPI Newsletter – October 19th, 2012
We are very proud of our Dad professionally as well. In the mid-1970's, when myself and
my sisters were going through high school,
Beauval Indian Education Center attracted
attention from Ottawa as having the highest
n u m b e r o f
treaty graduates in Canada. The "big shots"
even came out to visit,
wanting to know what w a s b e i n g
done right, probably in
hopes of duplicating
it. But I'll never forget my feeling of
immense pride, knowing
inside that the real reason for success here wasn’t just a recipe that could be repeated; it
was the innovative leadership and dedicated,
caring teamwork of people like my Dad, Mom, Lawrence Kyba and Charlie Farwell,
among other professional individuals, that
made the difference. Many students who went
o n t o fu r t her t h ei r edu ca t i o n and become leaders in their communities in
one way or another will tell you that the
teachers at BIEC were a big reason for their success.
After BIEC, Ed travelled across the Keewatin
district from northern Saskatchewan to
Ontario with a Parish Renewal Team, putting his skills to work in the faith community
providing programming such as Marriage
Encounter. A team member once remarked to me that Dad’s unique combination of
professionalism, respect, humour and humility
make him uniquely suited to work in this field. After the Parish Renewal work, Ed held
several contracts with Northlands College,
finally retiring from teaching in 1998.
Since retirement, Ed has remained very active as the family go-to Carpenter,
Mechanic, Plumber, Lumberjack, Repairman
of Anything, Fishing & Hunting Outfitter and
P h o t o g r a p h e r /H i s t o r i a n . H e
continues to be a life-
long learner, not afraid of tackling new
skills required to surf
the ever-changing o c ea n of n e w
technology. He still
p u t s h i s
organizational and math skills to work as
volunteer book-keeper
for St. Mary Magdalene Parish, providing many years of accountability and
transparency. He has coordinated the Birthday
Calendar parish fundraiser for many years. He loves to get phone calls and visits from family
and friends, with whom he shares many
wonderful memories. He continues to be in
demand across the Keewatin district as a Christopher Course instructor, always
answering the call to serve with
enthusiasm. He’s the kind of person content to work quietly behind the scenes without
recognition, and that’s all the more reason to
pay him tribute. Above all, his unfailing belief
in the inherent dignity and potential of every person, makes him to this day a wonderful
teacher, and a cherished father.
We love you, Dad. Happy Birthday! -Debbie Mihalicz
Friends and Family: Please join us for cake
and coffee as we celebrate Dad’s birthday on
the evening of Wednesday, October 24th at
their house. The best gift you can bring is
yourself.

Happy Birthday, Ed Mihalicz How many of us will get to celebrate our 75th birthday together
with our Mother, on her 98th? That was the case on the
Thanksgiving weekend when the Mihalicz family gathered for
the happy occasion of Ed's 75th birthday and his mother, Rose's, 98th birthday.
Ed was born at Lestock, Saskatchewan on October 24, 1937, the
first child of Albert and Rose Mihalicz. Growing up on the farm, he learned the values of family, responsibility and relationship
with the land. In 1956 Ed graduated from high school and
enrolled in Moose Jaw Teachers College where he met Angela Jordens. They married in 1959 and two weeks later, were flying
into Dillon as community teachers, embarking on a northern
adventure which would define the rest of their lives.
Ed and Angie have made Beauval their home since 1963, where Dad served as teacher and eventually principal. They
raised 5 girls who will always be grateful for the life made for
us: summers spent at our beautiful sandy beaches, letting us ride across the lake on the bow of the boat (which he had gotten for
next to nothing because it had 3 huge holes in the bottom which
he fiberglassed, making it good as new), casting Christmas lights
up the CB radio antenna with a fishing rod, hunting each fall and winter to fill our freezer with moose, caribou and deer, building
wonderful contraptions out of Tinkertoys, including a little gas-
powered sled that accidentally burned the teddy bear's butt as it propelled across the snow, practical jokes pulled on
friends, always making time for ice cream, hours of
entertainment watching old family movies faithfully captured by Dad from day one, and teaching us about Canada the best way
possible - hauling us across the country in a station wagon, all
five kids complete with a big family dog - I still say our parents
deserve a medal of honour for that. These things and countless other memories will always be in our hearts and we are the
luckiest kids in the world to have a Dad like ours.

REDUCE, REUSE, RECYCLE
DURING WASTE REDUCTION
WEEK IN SASKATCHEWAN
Environment Minister Ken Cheveldayoff has
proclaimed October 15-21 as Waste Reduction Week. This is the 12th year that the week has been
organized across Canada with the purpose of
educating people about the impact of waste on our
environment, promoting the three R's of waste
management - reduce, reuse and recycle - and
celebrating our achievements.
"Saskatchewan has made excellent efforts to go
green, with industry-led recycling programs for
used tires, oil, paint and electronics keeping more
than 38 million kilograms of material from our
landfills in 2011, but we can always do more,"
Cheveldayoff said. "This week empowers us all to
conserve our resources, reduce the amount of waste entering our landfills and sustain our natural
environment. With the growth that Saskatchewan
communities is experiencing, it is important for us
to manage and reduce waste safely, ensuring the
excellent quality of life citizens have come to
expect."
In keeping with the theme for Waste Reduction
Week, "Too Good to Waste", Saskatchewan
communities, businesses and individuals are
encouraged to plan activities to reduce the waste
we generate and take action.
"We're thrilled that the Ministry of Environment
has proclaimed Waste Reduction Week,"
Saskatchewan Waste Reduction Council Executive
Director Joanne Fedyk said. "Waste Reduction Week is a great opportunity to celebrate our
accomplishments and to adopt new waste-reducing
habits so that we can work toward a waste-free
Saskatchewan."
In Saskatchewan, Waste Reduction Week is being
organized by the Saskatchewan Waste Reduction
Council. For more information, visit

In Loving Memory of
My Dear Mother,
Marlene Roy July 31, 1959 - October 20, 1995
Mother, As I walk through the journey of life,
I remember.
I remember how you helped me to grow with
love, truth and honesty.
I remember how you helped me to choose the
right path with values, mortals, and self worth.
I remember how you gave me dreams with hope
and confidence.
As I remember,
I pray to be a mother like you,
to shape my children into strong adults, full of
hopes and dreams.
You made me who I am today,
and I will always remember you in life’s
passing's for no one could touch
my life as you have.
Missing you Always, & Forever,
your daughter Jolene & family
In loving memory
of my Mother/Sister
Marlene/Eliza Jane July 31st, 1959 -October 20th, 1995
Dear mom in heaven I thought of you today But that’s nothing new
I thought of you yesterday And will tomorrow too I think of you in silence
And make no outward show. For what it meant to lose you
Only those who love you know Remembering you is easy
I do it every day It’s the heartache of losing you
that will never go away
Sadly missed from your daughter Rachel Marlene

CIPI Newsletter – October 19th, 2012
We are very proud of our Dad professionally as well. In the mid-1970's, when myself and
my sisters were going through high school,
Beauval Indian Education Center attracted
attention from Ottawa as having the highest
n u m b e r o f
treaty graduates in Canada. The "big shots"
even came out to visit,
wanting to know what w a s b e i n g
done right, probably in
hopes of duplicating
it. But I'll never forget my feeling of
immense pride, knowing
inside that the real reason for success here wasn’t just a recipe that could be repeated; it
was the innovative leadership and dedicated,
caring teamwork of people like my Dad, Mom, Lawrence Kyba and Charlie Farwell,
among other professional individuals, that
made the difference. Many students who went
o n t o fu r t her t h ei r edu ca t i o n and become leaders in their communities in
one way or another will tell you that the
teachers at BIEC were a big reason for their success.
After BIEC, Ed travelled across the Keewatin
district from northern Saskatchewan to
Ontario with a Parish Renewal Team, putting his skills to work in the faith community
providing programming such as Marriage
Encounter. A team member once remarked to me that Dad’s unique combination of
professionalism, respect, humour and humility
make him uniquely suited to work in this field. After the Parish Renewal work, Ed held
several contracts with Northlands College,
finally retiring from teaching in 1998.
Since retirement, Ed has remained very active as the family go-to Carpenter,
Mechanic, Plumber, Lumberjack, Repairman
of Anything, Fishing & Hunting Outfitter and

for St. Mary Magdalene Parish, providing many years of accountability and
transparency. He has coordinated the Birthday
Calendar parish fundraiser for many years. He loves to get phone calls and visits from family
and friends, with whom he shares many
wonderful memories. He continues to be in
demand across the Keewatin district as a Christopher Course instructor, always
answering the call to serve with
enthusiasm. He’s the kind of person content to work quietly behind the scenes without
recognition, and that’s all the more reason to
pay him tribute. Above all, his unfailing belief
in the inherent dignity and potential of every person, makes him to this day a wonderful
teacher, and a cherished father.
We love you, Dad. Happy Birthday! -Debbie Mihalicz
