Potter’s beloved characters such as Mrs. Tiggywinkle, Jemima Puddleduck and Peter Rabbit are beautifully brought to life by the fantastic dancers of the Ashton Ballet Company. Faultless dancing on an exceptional set with charming music make this a true delight for the whole family.

A Turtle’s Tale: Sammy’s Adventure U

Date: Sat 11 Jun 1.30pm£4.50 (£2.50)Dir: Ben StassenBelgium 2010 88minsCast: Melanie Griffith, Isabelle Fuhrman, Yuri Lowenthal, Tim Curry

This beautifully animated adventure follows Sammy the turtle and his journey through the ocean in search of his mate, Shelley. Hatched in 1959, he spends the next 50 years searching the oceans and beaches for his beloved. The scenery is gloriously realised and truly a delight to see. As he travels, he sees the effect of people on the ocean around him.

Son of Rambow 12A

Date: Sat 25 Jun 1.30pm£4.50 (£2.50)Dir: Garth JenningsUK 2007 96minsCast: Bill Milner, Will Poulter, Jessica Hynes

This critically acclaimed coming of age story follows the young Will (Milner) who, after seeing Rambo: First Blood, is convinced into making a sequel with the worst behaved boy in school, Lee (Poulter). Through making their sequel, the boys develop a deep friendship and become blood brothers. But when French exchange student Didier wants to get involved in the film, complications develop.

A film that is warm, likeable and honest while avoiding sentimentalism. Certainly a grown up kids film.

Gnomeo and Juliet U

Date: Sat 21 May 1.30pm£4.50 (£2.50)Dir: Kelly AsburyUK 2011 84minsCast: James McAvoy, Emily Blunt, Ashley Jensen, Maggie Smith, Michael Caine

This cheerful adaptation of Romeo and Juliet transfers the action to neighbouring London gardens with the blue gnomes (Montagues) and the red gnomes (Capulets). An all star cast includes James McAvoy and Emily Blunt as the star crossed lovers with Michael Caine and Maggie Smith as their parents. Complemented by a fun soundtrack from Elton John this is a treat for the whole family. (And the ending’s not as grim as Shakespeare!)

“… a cheerful, likable picture with a big heart.” The Guardian

helloIt’s a bit like buses, you wait for one for ages, then a bunch come along all at once. So it is with French cinema it appears! But it has been worth the wait. A cluster of familiar names are here: Luc Besson, whose The Extraordinary Adventures of Adèle Blanc-Sec, an ‘Indiana Jones in a dress’, is spectacular and will delight audiences of all ages. Gerard Depardieu returns to the big screen in Mammuth, a droll tale of a man obliged to revisit his past to assure his pension. This is directed by Gustave de Kervern and Benoît Delépine, who brought us the outrageous Aaltra a few years back. Now they have Mammuth and Louise-Michel, a magnificently dark comedy of redundancy and revenge starring the unforgettable Yolande Moreau. The Full Monty, this ain’t!

Love Like Poison is a coming of age tale set in small town Brittany and draws you in with its compelling story telling. In marked contrast but equally effective, is La Casa Muda, The Silent House, a spine tingling tale of the Old Dark House from Uruguay. Shot on no budget, it is an object lesson in economical storytelling and scaring you out of your wits!

Wim Wenders, maker of The Buena Vista Social Club and The Wings of Desire, returns with Pina, a portrait of dance pioneer Pina Bausch in one of the most effective and engaging films about dance I have seen, worthy of the innovator that it portrays.

Avid readers will doubtless have picked up on the best seller, Water for Elephants, which now arrives as a beautiful and atmospheric romantic drama, set in the world of the travelling circus in Depression America, with Reese Witherspoon and Twilight heart-throb Robert Pattinson, proving there is more to him than just a pretty face.

Enjoy!

The Tempest

Cover Image: Mammuth The Tempest PG

Date: Fri 29 Apr – Thu 5 MayDir: Julie TaymorUS 2010 110minsCast: Helen Mirren, Felicity Jones, Djimon Honsou

In this adaptation of Shakespeare’s final play, Julie Taymor changes the gender of the main character, but leaves much of the rest unchanged. This allows Prospera to be played by Helen Mirren at the height of her powers. The phenomenal central performance from Mirren alone makes the film worth seeing but the supporting cast includes Alfred Molina, Tom Conti, Russell Brand and Ben Whishaw.

Shakespeare’s classic with a refreshing twist.

“Taymor’s winningly cast, imaginative take on Shakespeare passes the test of bringing the Bard to film.” Empire

Essential Killing

Route Irish 15

Date: Fri 29 Apr – Tue 3 MayDir: Ken LoachUK 2010 109minsCast: Mark Womack, Andrea Lowe, John Bishop

Fergus (Womack) returns to his native Liverpool for the funeral of his childhood friend Frankie (Bishop), a fellow private security contractor who has been killed on ‘Route Irish’, the deadly and now infamous stretch of road between Baghdad airport and the Green Zone.

Refusing to accept the official account of his best friend’s death, Fergus launches his own investigation, fuelled by the discovery of a cell phone on which Frankie had recorded the shooting of an innocent Iraqi family just days before his own death.

As his investigation ramps up Fergus soon draws the heat of those he is investigating and a once dirty foreign war is transferred to the streets of Liverpool and pursued on home turf.

Ken Loach’s latest film is a return to what he is known for – hard hitting, angry dramas.

Essential Killing 15

Date: Wed 4 & Thu 5 MayDir: Jerzy SkolimowskiPoland / Norway / Ireland / Hungary 2010 83mins subtitledCast: Vincent Gallo, Emmanuelle Seigner, David L. Price

Vincent Gallo stars as a man on the run…

Captured in Afghanistan by US forces, Mohammed is subject to interrogation and rendition. In the course of his journey through an unnamed European country, he escapes across a snow-covered landscape where he attempts to live off the land, eventually having his wounds tended by a deaf and mute woman.

Virtually without dialogue, its simple and in some ways traditional narrative recalls The Fugitive – but transformed through imaginative cinematography, clever use of natural imagery and perfect timing. A powerful reminder that in any conflict, one side does not hold a prerogative on human feeling and experience.

Little White Lies 15 Les Petits Mouchoirs

Date: Fri 6 – Sun 8 MayDir: Guillaume CanetFrance 2010 154mins subtitledCast: François Cluzet, Marion Cotillard, Benoît Magimel

Marion Cotillard and François Cluzet head a terrific cast in this acerbic group portrait of the Parisian bourgeoisie on holiday, from Tell No One director Guillaume Canet.

A group of long-term friends get together for a holiday and end up confronting their personal truths and traumas. While Ludo, the biggest bon vivant in the crowd, faces a crisis of his own, the friends head off for their annual holiday at the seaside house of Max, a successful but hyper-stressed restaurateur. Inevitable, the friends soon come to terms with their own secrets, anxieties and desires, with Max in particular heading for meltdown after being rattled by an intimate confession from his closest friend.

Black Swan 15

Date: Fri 6 – Mon 9 MayDir: Darren AronofskyUS 2010 108minsCast: Natalie Portman, Mila Kunis, Winona Ryder, Vincent Cassel

A psychological thriller set in the world of a New York City ballet. Black Swan stars Natalie Portman in an Oscar winning performance as Nina, a featured dancer who finds herself locked in a web of competitive intrigue with a new rival at the company. This is a thrilling and at times terrifying journey through the psyche of a young ballerina whose starring role as the Swan Queen turns out to be a part for which she becomes frighteningly perfect.

“Natalie Portman excels in this gripping ballet psychodrama from Darren Aronofsky.” HHHH The Guardian

Inside Job 12A

Date: Mon 9 – Wed 11 MayDir: Charles FergusonUS 2010 120minsCast: Matt Damon (narrator)

Charles Ferguson takes a bi-partisan, apolitical look into what actually caused the economic crash in 2008. This is a supremely rational look at the crisis and explores a broad range of highly informed economists, academics, psychologists, journalists and politicians to get to the bottom of who and what caused the crisis.

Directed with a clear head and a clenched fist, this is a measured, sensible exploration of the issues giving a comprehensive and understandable picture of the crash. Rejecting Michael Moore style stunts for statistics and a sober and mature examination, this is a truly must-see documentary.

Meek’s Cutoff PG

Date: Tue 10 – Thu 12 MayDir: Kelly ReichardtUS 2010 104mins Cast: Michelle Williams, Paul Dano, Bruce Greenwood, Shirley Henderson

An absorbing and beautifully composed western, set on the Oregon trail in the 1840s.

A wagon train of three families has hired mountain man Stephen Meek to guide them over the Cascade Mountains. Claiming to know a shortcut, he leads the group on an unmarked path over the high plain desert, only to become lost in the arid rock and sage. As food and water run low, tensions emerge, and the group’s faith in Meek and in their own ability to survive is sorely tested.

La Peau Douce

Date: Fri 13 & Sat 14 MayDir: François TruffautFrance 1964 118mins subtitledCast: Jean Desailly, Françoise Dorléac, Nelly Benedetti

Silken Skin is regarded by critics as one of Truffaut’s finest films and yet is sadly neglected. It tells the story of a celebrity lecturer (Dessailly) who begins an affair with an air hostess (Dorléac).

“It’s stunningly assured, suspenseful, emotionally truthful and tough” Daily Telegraph

A rare chance to see a neglected film by a true master and a fantastic performance from Dorléac, Catherine Deneuve’s elder sister whose career was cut tragically short.

True Grit 15

Date: Fri 13 – Sun 15 May & Wed 18 MayDir: Ethan and Joel CoenUS 2010 110minsCast: Matt Damon, Jeff Bridges, Josh Brolin, Hailee Steinfield

This remake of the 1969 classic western by the Coen Brothers (Fargo, No Country for Old Men) sees a 14-year old girl (Steinfield) hire a man with ‘true grit’ to help her hunt down the killer of her father. She finds Reuben Cogburn (Bridges) a true reprobate and the toughest U.S. marshal around. His less than noble character makes her insist on following him and they are joined by Texas ranger LaBoeuf (Damon) who is hunting the killer for his own reasons.

“A classic American Western. Damon expertly navigates the line between foolish and loveable, and Bridges is sublime. True Grit is a classic expertly revisited.” Time

The Blood of a Poet Le sang d’un poète

Date: Sun 15 May 8pm£10 (£8)Dir: Jean CocteauFrance 1930 55mins subtitledCast: Enrique Rivero, Elizabeth Lee Miller

It makes perfect sense that one of the most innovative forces in alternative music would apply his talent to one of the most innovative forces in cinema.

Live in person, Steven Severin takes poetic licence in presenting an avant-garde music event steeped in the darkness and light of the seductively surreal images by Jean Cocteau on screen.

One of cinema’s great experiments, The Blood of a Poet is the first instalment of the Orphic Trilogy and stretches the medium to its limits in an effort to capture the poet’s obsession with the struggle between the forces of life and death.

every minute, always is a unique headphones performance for two people that takes place in a cinema. Seated amongst other couples, this highly crafted experience unfolds for each participant through headphones and in concert with what they see on screen. From the intimate, low-lit vantage of the cinema seat, the participant is guided by the voice of the narrator into a rich and sonically transporting world of cinematic perspective.

This is a captivating experience for two people, well suited to friends, families and work colleagues. It can also be undertaken by adventurous strangers too.

Pina UDate: Mon 16 – Wed 18 MayDir: Wim WendersGermany 2011 106mins subtitledCast: Regina Advento, Malou Airaudo, Ruth Amarante

Dancer Pina Bausch is legendary. As celebrated as Isadora Duncan and Martha Graham, she transformed the language of dance. Designed to ignite emotion in the viewer, Pina’s multi-media creations offered a visual experience like no other. This feature-length dance film with the ensemble of the Tanztheater Wuppertal, showcases the unique and inspiring art of the great German choreographer, who died in the summer of 2009.

Director Wim Wenders (Buena Vista Social Club, Wings of Desire) takes the audience straight onto the stage with the legendary ensemble and follows the dancers into the city and the surrounding area of Wuppertal. A visual stunning journey of discovery.

A Small Act 12A

Date: Wed 18 & Thu 19 MayDir: Jennifer ArnoldUS 2010 88minsCast: Chris Mburu

When Hilde Back sponsored a young, rural Kenyan student, she thought nothing of it. She certainly never expected to hear from him, but years later she does. Now a Harvard graduate and a Human Rights Lawyer for the United Nations, Chris Mburu decides to find the stranger who changed his life. Inspired by her generosity, he starts a scholarship programme of his own and names it for his former benefactor.

Using a strong narrative, the film interweaves seemingly separate lives into a cohesive whole. With clarity and grace, A Small Act bears witness to the ripple effect a single action can create.

“A Small Act is a precious and inspiring tale… Filmmaker Jennifer Arnold gracefully and fluidly tells the uplifting story of Hilde Back and Chris Mburu.” The Hollywood Reporter

With a second, much larger target threatening to kill millions in downtown Chicago, Colter re-lives the incident over and over again, gathering clues each time, until he can solve the mystery of who is behind the bombs and prevent the next attack.

Sent to represent his company at the annual insurance convention, Tim is soon distracted by three convention veterans who will show him the ropes and push his boundaries. For a guy who plays everything by the book, this convention will be anything but conventional.

For his best friend Miles, the trip means wrestling with the gloomy reality that the ones he loves tend to die. For Davy it’s about being there and holding the effort together, while for Bill it’s about running away from the mistakes he’s made and the comfortable trap that is his life.

Louise-Michel 12A

Date: Fri 10 – Sun 12 JunDir: Gustave de Kervern, Benoît DelépineBelgium 2008 93mins subtitledCast: Yolande Moreau, Bouli Lanners, Benoît Poelvoorde

Absurdist French filmmakers Benoît Delépine and Gustave Kervern follow up Aaltra with Louise-Michel, a wonderfully unpredictable, left-of-centre comedy in which the recently-fired female employees of a children’s clothing factory pool their funds in order to put a ‘hit’ on their callous boss.

Out of work and down on her luck ex-con Louise proposes to her jobless sisters the idea of ridding the world of the man responsible for their dire situation. While security specialist Michel seems like the perfect candidate to carry out the hit, his ineptitude is so great that he attempts to sub-contract the job to a series of inexperienced – and highly inappropriate – assassins.

“Gleefully anarchic, relentlessly subversive and furiously funny.” HHHH Empire

Jûsan-nin no shikaku

Date: Fri 10 – Mon 13 JunDir: Takashi Miike Japan 2010 141mins subtitledCast: Kôji Yakusho, Takayuki Yamada, Yûsuke Iseva

The latest film from Takashi Miike (Audition) sees thirteen Samurai teaming up to take out the sadistic Lord Naritsugu. They set a trap for him in a nearby town and prepare to kill him and his seventy guards.

This masterful piece of story-telling is Miike’s most accomplished feature to date with a strong cast and a phenomenal final act.

“13 Assassins is pure pleasure. It culminates in a magnificent 45-minute showdown that has to be the best final battle sequence in cinema since, oh Kill Bill at least.” Screendaily.com

Date: Mon 13 – Thu 16 JunDir: Rowan JofféUK 2011 107minsCast: Helen Mirren, John Hurt, Andy Serkis, Sam Riley, Andrea Riseborough

Another chance to see one of this year’s favourites.

Based on the 1938 British noir classic by Graham Greene, Rowan Joffe’s Brighton Rock is set in the mods and rockers era of the 60s. It charts the headlong fall of Pinkie (Sam Riley, Control), a razor-wielding disadvantaged teenager hell bent on clawing his way up through the ranks of organised crime. At the heart of the story is Pinkie’s relationship with Rose (Riseborough), an apparently innocent young waitress who stumbles on evidence linking Pinkie and his gang to a revenge killing.

Julia’s Eyes 15

Shortly after the discovery, Julia’s eyes begin to fail and she has an eye transplant. When recovering from the surgery in her sister’s house she begins to feel that she is being watched…

Much of the team who made The Orphanage including producer Guillermo del Toro return to make this tense thriller.

Mammuth 15

Date: Fri 17 – Wed 22 JunDir: Gustave de Kervern, Benoît DelépineFrance 2010 92mins subtitledCast: Gérard Depardieu, Yolande Moreau, Isabelle Adjani

Mammuth is the story of a man, a mission and a motorbike. Serge (Depardieu) is an abattoir worker who retires only to find that he doesn’t have a pension and needs to track down paperwork from his former employers. Hitting the road on his Mammuth bike, he has a series of variously humiliating and inspiring encounters – including a reunion with a long-lost cousin, the cue for one of the most outrageous sight gags in recent cinema.

The cult directors Kervern and Delépine return with an incredible cast with seven best acting Césars (French Oscars) between Depardieu and Adjani alone!

Win Win 15

Date: Fri 17 – Thu 23 JunDir: Thomas McCarthyUS 2011 106minsCast: Paul Giamatti, Amy Ryan, Jeffrey Tambor, Alex Shaffer

With a stellar cast, including the incomparable Jeffrey Tambor (Arrested Development) on top form, Win Win promises to be a heart-warming comedy drama.

The Messenger tbc

Date: Wed 22 – Mon 27 JunDir: Oren MovermanUS 2009 113minsCast: Ben Foster, Samantha Morton, Woody Harrelson

In this powerful and tender story, Will Montgomery has just returned home from a tour in Iraq and is assigned to the Army’s Casualty Notification service. Partnered with fellow officer Tony Stone to bear the bad news to the loved ones of fallen soldiers, Will faces the challenge of completing his mission while seeking to find comfort and healing back on the home front. When he finds himself drawn to Olivia, to whom he has just delivered the news of her husband’s death, Will’s emotional detachment begins to dissolve and the film reveals itself as a surprising, humorous, moving and very human portrait of grief, friendship and survival.

Featuring tour-de-force performances from Foster, Harrelson and Morton, and a brilliant directorial debut by Moverman, The Messenger brings us into the inner lives of these outwardly steely heroes to reveal their fragility with compassion and dignity.

Countdown to Zero tbc

Date: Tue 21 JunDir: Lucy WalkerUS 2010 91 minsCast: Graham Allison, James Baker III, Bruce Blair as themselves

Official selection: Cannes Film Festival 2010 and Sundance Film Festival 2010

In this chilling documentary Lucy traces the history of the atomic bomb from its origins to the present state of global affairs: nine nations possess nuclear weapons capabilities with others racing to join them, with the world held in a delicate balance that could be shattered by an act of terrorism, failed diplomacy, or a simple accident. She interviews a number of high profile talking heads including Jimmy Carter, Tony Blair, Pervez Musharaff and Mikhail Gorbachev. This is truly frightening documentary showing that the nuclear threat is far from over.

Q&A broadcast via satellite follows this screening.

helloIt’s a bit like buses, you wait for one for ages, then a bunch come along all at once.

Enjoy!

This critically acclaimed coming of age story follows the young Will (Milner) who, after seeing Rambo: First Blood, is convinced into making a sequel with the worst behaved boy in school, Lee (Poulter). A film that is warm, likeable and honest while avoiding sentimentalism. Certainly a grown up kids film.
