WELCOME TO THE 6TH EDITION OF CINEAST

For the sixth time already, CinEast, the Central and Eastern European Film Festival in Luxembourg, invites you to undertake an inspiring journey of discovery into the depths of the recent cinematography of countries of the former Communist bloc.

Over 19 festival days you will have the opportunity to take your pick from around a hundred screenings of films of all shapes and sizes, as well as a chance to relax or entertain yourself at numerous accompanying events.

As always, the films have been carefully selected by well-informed film enthusiasts from the represented countries to make sure that CinEast’s fishing net brings in the best haul.

You can choose from around 50 different feature films and 50 shorts. The vast majority of the movies presented at the festival have not been screened in the region before and most probably will not get a second chance on local screens, so it pays off to be prepared well for these one-off encounters.

Eight films will compete in CinEast’s official competition and many films come under the featured theme “Women’s Stories”. You can participate in discussions with around 20 special festival guests (directors, actors, producers, etc.) and the programme also features numerous comedies, a selection of documentaries, several mini-retrospectives, programmes for children, gastronomy evenings and more.

The concerts programme is equally varied, with female vocal magic by Yellow Sisters, Balkan beats by DJ Boris Viande, cinematic concert by Małe Instrumenty, Tanel Padar’s rock energy and cool vibes by Milenita.

We hope that everyone can find something interesting in this year’s programme and we are looking forward to meeting you in the cinemas and concert venues.

Finally, we would like to say thank you to all those who have made this year’s edition possible and especially to you, the festival-goers, for staying with us and giving us the power and motivation to go forward. We wish you all pleasant and enriching moments with CinEast 2013!

The CinEast team

WOMEN’S STORIES

Numerous films on the programme (features, documentaries and short films) focus on the women related questions: women’s rights, their situation, life stories. Narrated by women and/or about women, their stories are often unexpected, gripping, sometimes disturbing. They look on the life styles and challenges faced by women nowadays as well as in the past.

The cycle will be complemented with debates (see p. 6) and also explored in a comprehensive photo exhibition “Women’s Stories” at the Abbaye de Neumünster presenting works of six artists from Poland, Latvia, Bulgaria and Luxembourg as well as in the framework of “The Edouard Allen Project” exhibition at the Ancien Cinéma in Vianden (see p. 10-11).

CINéYOUTH

CINéDEBATES

CINéFOCUSCINEAST 2013 LOOKS CLOSELY AT THE WORK OF:

Alice Nellis (1971), one of the most well-known Czech female di-rectors whose films in most cases can be characterised as “Wom-en’s Stories” and therefore fit perfectly in the festival’s thematic cycle. CinEast brings you the films Some Secrets, Little Girl Blue and Mamas&Papas. With the support of Czech Centre Brussels.

Eryk Lubos (1974), one of the currently busiest Polish film, thea-tre and TV actors appearing in numerous productions each year, awarded Best Actor award at Karlovy Vary IFF 2012 for his perfor-mance in Kill the Beaver. He stars in the films Women’s Day, The Girl in the Wardrobe and Highway Patrol.

Metod Pevec (1958), a Slovenian director, scriptwriter and also documentary maker, who likes to explore the inner world of his strong women characters and who comes to CinEast with the award-winning films Estrellita and Tango Abrazos (and will attend the first two screenings of Tango Abrazos).

Agitprop (since 1997), arguably the best known and most suc-cessful Bulgarian production company specialising in creative documentaries that also manages the independent Balkan Doc-umentary Center which supports documentary makers from the region. At CinEast, Agitprop will be represented by the producer Martichka Bozhilova and the films Balkan Melodie, The Last Black Sea Pirates and Tzvetanka.

Łódź Film School (since 1948) or “Filmówka” has produced some of the best talents of, and not only, Polish cinema. In celebration of its 65th anniversary, CinEast proudly presents a special retrospec-tive of short films by its graduates of both the older and younger generations, including works by Polanski, Kieslowski, Wajda or Ko-masa (more info p. 41).

AS ALWAYS, CINEAST HAS MANY SPECIALS FOR YOu

Three thematic double features are on the 2013 programme. Science romance includes two stories where science fiction meets romantic love story exploring unusual forms of love which is made possible by advanced scientific research. Call an ambulance gives you an insight into the daily bread of paramedic emergency crews – one filled with black humour and another sadly realistic. And last but not least, Walter double feature looks at the cult partisan hero loved by the whole ex-Yugoslavia and a billion of Chinese people. The long but rewarding thriller-like historical drama series Burning Bush directed by Agnieszka Holland is another treat not to be missed and, luckily, the 240 minutes marathon will be inter-rupted with life-saving snacks and drinks. Speaking of marathons... Those fond of shorter formats should definitely attend the four short films marathons presenting a care-fully selected panorama of some of the best feature, documentary and animated shorts from the region, now with a chance to vote for audience awards in the three categories. Another short films programme is going to be screened at the cosy Ancien Cinéma in Vianden.

CINEAST 2013 ALSO FEATuRES SPECIAL PROGRAMMES FOR CHILDREN AND YOuNG PEOPLE

The already traditional Kids Show for children from the age of 2 years will again offer a series of cartoons with no spoken language. Three Sunday afternoon screenings for children aged 5+ in coop-eration with Cinémathèque’s Cinéma Paradiso will bring animated films in French, Luxembourgish and German.A fruity 3D animated opera (!) Lisa Limone & Maroc Orange can please slightly older crowds, as well as whole families, while those just entering their teens (and their mums) can easily identify them-selves with the main characters of Mother I Love You. Adolescent girls could get inspired (or rather warned) by The Beauty Exchange and zoo-lovers will surely enjoy the light comedy Tigers in the City...In addition, a series of non-public school screenings for students only will be organised in collaboration with the European School (Kirchberg and Mamer) and Lycée Classique Diekirch.

THREE FILMS IN THE PROGRAMME WILL BE FOLLOWED BY DEBATES

Documentarian: debate about the relationship between the documentary-maker and the documented.

The Beauty Exchange: “Mirror, mirror on the wall...“- a debate on the influence of mass media on female body perception.

Regina: debate on the role of women in Jewish community today and in the past.

CINEAST 2013 CINEAST 2013

CINéGASTRONOMY CINéMUSIC

As in previous editions, CinEast 2013 provides numerous op-portunities to explore the cuisines of the gastronomically lesser known part of Europe.

Two gastronomic evenings will be held at the Brasserie Le Neu-münster on 17 and 22 October (starting at 18.30), offering a se-lection of typical Central and Eastern European dishes served in a buffet style, accompanied by regional beers and wines. This is your unique chance to try a salad from Bulgaria, a Balkan starter, a Czech main dish or a Croatian dessert, all made according to traditional recipes! We advise you to make a reservation by contacting the Brasserie directly (www.brasserieleneumunster.lu).

In addition, many programmes will include a tasting of typical snacks and drinks in order not to let your stomach ruin your cin-ema experiences. This is traditionally the case of the short films marathons, but this year you will also need them during the Burn-ing Bush special evening and they may well surprise you at other events too. Baltic surprises might be available at the Baltic Night (19/10) and if, for a change, you would like to taste some typical Bulgarian or Polish food and drinks, don’t eat before going out to the closing concert of Milenita (26/10). A handful of encounters with Balkan snacks are planned as well.

CINEAST 2013 HAS VARIOuS TREATS FOR MuSIC LOVERS TOO

The three festival Saturdays offer three different musical events, each of them comprising three parts – film, concert and party.

The three-course menu on October 12 in Melusina (see p. 19) fea-tures a screening of a documentary about solitary people in their 30s, a live a capella performance by four Czech female vocalists known as Yellow Sisters (voice magic!) and an energetic Balkan party with Paris based DJ Boris Viande and his live trumpet.

On the second festival Saturday, October 19 (see p. 37), Melusina hosts the very special Baltic Night with a warm-up documentary about the role of basketball in Lithuania’s fight for independence, a concert of the Estonian superstar rock band Tanel Padar & The Sun (riffs, energy, riffs!) and club rhythms served by Latvian DJs.

And the third is the Closing event of CinEast 2013 on October 26 in Sang&Klang (see p. 54-55): a true girl power night with a com-edy starring a Bulgarian top singer and musician Milenita, who will then come up on stage in person with her Funky Miracle Band (groovy, funky, lovely!) to give her first concert outside Bulgaria and the dancing will carry on with a mix provided by DJ Mozayka.

That’s not it though! A very unique cinematic concert will be giv-en by the Polish group Małe instrumenty at the Cinémathèque on October 16 (see p. 27), including live soundtrack to selected shorts by Georges Méliès and their own compositions and im-provisations, all played on an array of unusual objects and toy in-struments. And if you prefer the on-screen musical experience to real musicians, do not miss the musical journey to Romania and Bulgaria in Balkan Melodie or, for example, the outstanding ambi-ent score by BJ Nilsen to The Arbiter.

CINéART EXPO CCRN

EXPO ANCIEN CINEMA

PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBITON “WOMEN’S STORIES”Abbaye de Neumünster 9-27 October 2013

Reflecting the 2013 edition’s theme on “Women’s Stories”, CinEast presents a photographic exhibition showcasing Polish, Bulgarian, Latvian and Luxembourgish artists.

Starting from a familiar discourse associated with womanhood (such as beauty, pregnancy, age or gender equality), the exhibited works aim to challenge our perception of a woman’s position in society as well as female notions of identity.

Curator Jagna Olejnikowska has chosen to juxtapose pieces with a strong surreal quality with photographs depicting daily life in an apparently more traditional approach. Whether confronted with mature women, pregnant women, hidden or solitary women, the portraits captivate and startle the onlooker.

In her project entitled “Later”, Latvian artist Aija Bley has chosen to capture the various facets of women dealing with age, reveal-ing how perceived vulnerability can conceal a surprising strength. Polish photographer Peter Raw deals with the exceptional time in a woman’s life that is pregnancy.

While Aneta Ivanova’s exploration of femininity centres on vast urban and rural spaces, as well as the scars these places leave be-hind, Wioletta Golebiewska and Milena Marciniak focus on the intimate space of confined apartments - a place to reconnect or to get lost in. By merging animal masks and female portraits, the work of Luxembourgish artist Jeanine Unsen aims to challenge perceived notions of a woman’s social status, suggesting that the female face still remains partly hidden.

Exhibition organised in collaboration and with the support of the CCRN and Fonds Culturel National.

The photos from the exhibition can be purchased during the Cha-rity finale or by writing to [email protected]. All the proceeds will go to CinEast’s Charity project (see p. 57).

PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBITION “THE EDOUARD ALLEN PROJECT”Ancien Cinéma 9-27 October 2013

The exhibition is a tragicomical journey through the fictional film-ography of an ex-cinephile. For a long time, Edouard Allen recom-posed his life situations as though they were part of a movie. At the heart of all his stagings : women, the woman, a woman. A strange figure, fascinating and ungraspable, dangerous in a certain way, who transformed his everyday life and which he reinvented again and again - either by dressing her with Hollywood glamour, or making her free and impetuous like the heroines of the French Nouvelle Vague, or filling her with all the distanced anguish char-acteristic of the Antonioni movies. Then one day Edouard’s mental camera ran out of power …

Paulo Lobo is a photographer, journalist and editor of the archi-tecture magazine Wunnen. He was born in Portugal, Baixa da Ban-heira in 1964. When he was six years old, his parents emigrated to Luxembourg. Very young, he nourished a passion for photog-raphy and built up his knowledge as an autodidact. Since 2005, Paulo Lobo has also had a blog entitled “Voyages en suspens” with various writings on culture, photography and cinema.

OPENING FILM

TANGO AbRAzOS / VAjE V ObjEMu (Slovenia, 2012) by METOD PEVEC drama/comedy, 89 min, en subtitles

When two seemingly happily settled couples enrol in a dance school for tango – a dance that symbolises passion and desire – their relationships are put to the test. It turns out that the four protagonists are “physically” better matched in the opposite combinations. This surprising dance harmony and spontaneity kindles the first feelings of jealousy. The two men begin to treat the lessons much more enthusiastically than expected and their female coun-terparts try to be more pleasant and appealing than would be necessary for their own partners. They begin to take a dangerous interest in each other and the situation escalates when they decide to spend New Year’s Eve together... The film Tango Abrazos won three Vesna awards (Best Director, Best Actor and Best Actress) at the Slovenian Film Festival in Portorož in 2012.

Boris plays live trumpet whilst deejaying an eclectic mix of what he calls “Balkan music, gypsy, latino, italo, russkij, celtic, rubadubstep, drumnbrass, rude boy, kamikaze, franchouillard acoustic pogo...” Lots of influences (al-though Balkan and Gypsy clearly dominate), lots of experimentation and above all lots of contagious joy and energy!

YELLOW SISTERS & BALKAN PARTY

GENERATION SINGlES / GENERACE SINGlES (Czech Republic, 2011) by JANA POČTOVÁ documentary, 79 min, en subtitles

An unabashed testimony of six characters over the course of one year. The six ‘singles’ openly speak about wasted opportunities, their fear of time passing, sex and intimacy. They see the field of potential partners growing narrower and nar-rower. Insightful, funny, ironically observed – generation singles is all around us..

MARKETA lAzAROVA / MARKETA lAzAROVá (Czechoslovakia, 1967) by FRANTIŠEK VLÁČIL

historical drama, 162 min, en subtitles

This stirring and poetic depiction of a feud between two rival medieval clans is a fierce, epic and meticulously drawn evocation of the clashes be-tween Christianity and paganism, humankind and nature, love and vio-lence. The combination of realistic medieval settings and ostentatious-ly modern cinematography makes it a rare gem in European cinema, often compared to Tarkovsky’s Andrei Roublev. Marketa Lazarová is con-sidered to be the greatest Czech film ever made. New restored version.

Set in Prague of 1950s, the film follows Hakl, a member of the Communist police force, and his investigation of a seemingly run-of-the-mill robbery at a goldsmith’s shop. His desire for the truth, though, leads him to new evidence indicating that the case is far more complicated than it seems. A film noir with a distinct look that accurately depicts the atmosphere of the time. Best Czech film of 2012.

This documentary captures every-day life in Trans-Dniestr through portraits of ordinary people living in this geo-political backwater, stuck between the European union and Russia, between the present and the past, crime and decency, decadence and hope for change. Showing the developing special relationship between a documentary-film-maker and his eccentric protagonist, the film is a shocking and thought-pro-voking story of the strength of character and fragility of the heart, against a surreal backdrop of nature in all its states (just as human nature). The Polish band Małe Instrumenty (“small instru-ments”) explores new sounds by using a wide variety of small instruments and musical objects. The instru-ments used in their sonic experiments run the whole spectrum of miniature professional instruments, from sonic toys made for children to novel musical concoc-tions and a whole array of small items that aren’t really instruments but do make sounds. Their curiosity leads them on stunning musical journeys off the beaten paths and the music created in this way produces a unique palette of sounds that can be at once beauti-ful and harmonious but also surprising and dissonant, without in any way compromising on its rich reso-nance.

For the first time in Luxembourg, Małe Instrumenty is bringing a varied and eclectic repertoire: the perfor-mance will be a mosaic, made up of a ciné-concert with live music to accompany five short films by Georges Méliès, (see details on the right) some origi-nal arrangements of well-known film music, their own compositions as well as some improvisations. The programme includes the following films:

Historical perspective, combined with a dynamic story of daily life in the Polish People’s Republic, should help com-prehend the phenomenon of the transformations that took place at that time..

GRAND PRIX WINNER REPETITION

Repetition of the film awarded the Grand Prix of CinEast 2013

announced during the Awards ceremony on 25 October.

Check the festival website for details. With Charity Project finale

(counting your contributions and selling photos from the exhibi-

tion “Women’s Stories”).

Last year, your contributions enabled specialised “clown-doctors” to visit and cheer up 1200 seriously ill children in Croatian hospitals. This is something you can truly feel good about! Thank you once again!

As “Women’s Stories” is the focus of this year´s edition, we approached a Czech NGO “ROSA” specialising in helping women (and their children) who have been victims of domestic violence. Among other activities, this NGO runs a shelter catering for women with limited means who seek immediate refuge after taking one the most difficult decisions of their life – finally leaving their own home to protect themselves from unbearable violence. Please help us support this NGO in their efforts to purchase and install security doors for this shelter to allow the victims feel 100% safe from the violators and gradu-ally find the strength to start anew.

You can put your donations in one of our piggy banks which you will find in the main festival venues. They will be publicly smashed and your dona-tions counted by volunteers present at the Cinémathèque for the last festival screening (27/10). You will also be able to support the project by purchasing the photos from the “Women’s Stories” exhibition (see www.cineast.lu for de-tails). The donations will immediately be forwarded to this NGO.
