ALEKS Access (Required): You must register in our ALEKS course by noon on Sun. Sep. 1. Unregistered students may dropped from the class.

ALEKS includes an electronic version of the text, so you do not need to purchase a printed textbook. Follow the instructions on p. 8 of the syllabus to register in our ALEKS course. Access may be purchased directly through ALEKS using a credit card ($60 for 18-week access). You can delay

payment for up to two weeks using the temporary access code 1E43D-802F7-1772B-3BA0A. You may also purchase an 18-week ALEKS code in the FC bookstore for about $78 (only recommended if you are on

an EOPS grant and must get your materials at the bookstore). Ask the staff at the bookstore counter for the Math 100 ALEKS access code.

ALEKS can be accessed using tablets and smartphones, but desktop or laptop computers are recommended.

STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES 1. Perform operations on sets, and use Venn diagrams to represent sets and draw conclusions about the represented sets. 2. Solve geometric applications by selecting and applying appropriate formulas. 3. Calculate the probability of a simple or composite event. 4. Organize data in a meaningful way and apply the concepts of probability and statistics to a given situation in order to make relevant observations, predictions, and conclusions. 5. Use the rules of logic to determine equivalency of statements, analyze arguments and determine their validity, and draw valid conclusions from a given set of premises.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: Prerequisite(s): MATH 040 F with a grade of “C” or better or math skills clearance. (MATH 041 F and 043 F are accepted as equivalent to MATH 040 F as a prerequisite.) 54 hours lecture per term. This course provides an introduction to a variety of mathematical topics including set theory, logic and deductive reasoning, geometry, probability, statistics, and other selected topics. It is designed for students majoring in liberal arts, education or communication. Calculators or computers may be used for selected topics. (CSU) (UC) (Degree Credit) AA GE, CSU GE, IGETC

Note: In a college course, it is expected that you will spend 3 hours per week for every 1 unit earned. This means for this 3-unit class, you should plan to spend at least 7½ hours per week outside of class completing worksheets, working online, doing homework and studying, for a total of 9 hours per week needed for this class!!!! Include 7-1/2 hours for math in your weekly schedule.

MATERIALS NEEDED: 1. ALEKS access – must register by noon on Sun. Sep. 1 or you may be dropped from the class 2. Computer access – available in the Math Lab if you don’t have a laptop, tablet or desktop computer at home 3. PENCIL and eraser - please do all work in pencil 4. Scientific calculator – graphing calculators also OK, but cell phones are NOT permitted for quizzes and exams 5. Scanner or scanner app to scan and upload your written assignments. You may use a free cell phone scanner

app such as CamScanner (instructions posted in Canvas). Or scanners are available for student use in the library, and in the computer labs (Rooms 2200 and 511).

6. Formula sheet – bring this handout to class every day (posted on Canvas under Files if you misplace your copy)

COURSE REQUIREMENTS: Since this is a hybrid class, you will be doing the majority of work for the class online. Each week you’ll work through

a module in Canvas that may include PowerPoint presentations, videos, ALEKS assignments, and written assignments. In class, we will use our time to re-enforce and deepen your understanding through practice problems and team activities, to preview upcoming lessons, and to assess what you have learned.

1. Exams (50% of grade)

a. Exams 1, 2 and 3 (200 points each) – Notes allowed: formula sheet plus one whole sheet of 8½ x 11” paper

with notes on ONE side. Your notes must be handwritten or typed by you.

b. Final Exam (comprehensive, 200 points) – For the final exam, you may use the formula sheet plus TWO

whole sheets of 8½ x 11” paper with notes on ONE side each. Your notes must be handwritten or typed by you.

2. In-Class Participation and Activities (10% of grade) a. Warm-ups (10 points each) – Given at 9:00 AM sharp. Four points are free just for being on time; 6 points for

participating and doing the problems (right or wrong).

b. Other class activities (10 points each) – To earn the points for an activity, you must be in class and

participating in the entire activity from start (when I hand out the activity) to finish (when we finish reviewing the answers on the board). If you arrive late, leave early, or leave class in the middle (e.g. to use the bathroom), you will not earn the points for that activity.

3. Quizzes (5% of grade, 25 points each) - You may use a 3x5 inch card (one side) plus the formula sheet.

4. ALEKS Objectives (10% of grade) See schedule on pages 9-11 of syllabus. Objectives are due on Thursday night at 11:59 PM. The ALEKS system will

not allow you to work on an objective after the due date. Any topics you do not master within one objective will pour over into future objectives. That means if you do not finish an objective on time, you will lose points AND make your future objectives longer, so be sure to keep up with the schedule. Your score is based on the percentage of the objective that you complete on time.

If you finish an objective early and want to work ahead, you may click “Continue My Path” in ALEKS to start the next objective.

5. ALEKS Pie Progress (5% of grade)

Points are awarded at four times during the semester for making progress in your ALEKS pie:

By 10/1 - target is 40 topics (20 pts)

By 10/29 – target is 80 topics (20 pts)

By 11/26 – target is 120 topics (20 pts)

By 12/15 – target is 135 topics (40 pts) Total number of topics in pie is approx. 150 You earn full credit if you meet or exceed the target. If not, the points you earn are based on your percentage of the target achieved.

6. ALEKS Weekly Time (5% of grade)

Minimum time working in ALEKS to earn the weekly time points is 1.5 hours. You will usually need considerably more time to finish your objectives, but you earn the points for weekly time once you hit the 1.5-hour target. Even if you finish the weekly objective in less than 1.5 hours, keep working on the next objective.

7. Packets and Worksheets (15% of grade)

a. Packets - Packets will be handed out in class. They are also posted on Canvas (FC website www.fullcoll.edu,

Canvas link at the top) on the Files tab in case you don’t get a packet in class. You’ll complete the packet as you work through the weekly module. The module pages have instructions to

complete the packet as you go along. Once completed, you’ll reach a packet submission page in the module. You’ll need to scan your completed packet

(may use a free cell phone scanner app such as CamScanner), and upload the scan in Canvas by the due date and time, usually Friday morning at 8:30 AM.

If you cannot deal with scanning and uploading, I will accept the packet on paper at the beginning of class. But you will get 1 extra credit point per packet for submitting it online and on time in Canvas. No extra credit if submitted on paper.

b. Extra Credit Worksheets *Optional* Some Canvas modules include an optional worksheet for extra credit. If you wish, you may print extra credit worksheets, complete using pencil, scan and upload to Canvas. Extra credit worksheets have due dates as shown on Canvas (usually Friday morning at 8:30 AM); late worksheets are accepted with a late penalty (see makeup policy).

8. HT sessions (Hornet Tutoring) – Tentative, possibly starting in a few weeks

Our course is not designated as part of Fullerton College’s Hornet Tutoring (HT) Program (a voluntary student success program). But I have another Math 100 class that is an HT class. If space is available after a few weeks, we will open their HT sessions to our class as well.

Hornet Tutoring provides an academic boost through regularly scheduled, out-of-class, peer facilitated sessions. The HT sessions are 50 minutes long and focus on improving your performance in class. It is not intended only for struggling students. In fact, students who consistently attend HT are generally more successful and earn higher grades than those who don’t.

If HT becomes available, attendance will not be mandatory but will be recommended. Students that participate find it to be helpful and fun. Extra credit can be earned through HT attendance (see #9 below).

9. Extra Credit Available Extra Credit Worksheets at the end of some modules (usually 3-6 pts each)

1 extra credit point for each packet and worksheet submitted online and on time in Canvas o No extra credit if submitted on paper

HT Session attendance (tentative) and/or Math Lab time (36 pts maximum for HT and Math Lab combined) o HT Sessions (if available): 4 XC pts per 50-minute session – must attend entire session

Limit one HT session per week for XC o Math Lab time: 1 XC pt per 30 minutes of time shown on scanner report o For Math Lab, only time on the scanner report will be counted. Restrictions:

If you forget to scan in and out so your time is not on the report, your time will not be counted even if you were there.

The system subtracts any scheduled class time that overlaps your Math Lab time. If you go over 2 hours in a session, your time zeroes out. Scan out, then back in before 2 hours

elapses in a session or you will not receive credit for your time.

ALEKS KNOWLEDGE CHECKS ALEKS is based on the principle of mastery learning. “Knowledge checks” determine which topics you have mastered and which topics you still need to practice.

Initial Knowledge Check (take this by Mon. 9/2): Pre-test to show what you already know.

Periodic Knowledge Checks: pop up periodically to give you the opportunity to check off topics in future objectives by showing what you have already learned. If you miss questions you had previously mastered, ALEKS puts those topics back into your pathway for you to practice.

Once a periodic knowledge check appears, within the first 24 hours you have a choice:

After 24 hours, ALEKS will make you take the knowledge check before you can do anything else. If you wish, you can click an icon on the home screen to see when your next knowledge

check will appear. TOP RIGHT OF ALEKS HOMESCREEN after you log in:

ATTENDANCE and PARTICIPATION POLICY Participation is required in both the in-class and online portions of the class. You may be dropped for lack of

participation in either portion. You should only miss class for serious and compelling reasons, e.g. illness, death in the family, emergency, etc.

MAKE-UP POLICY: ALEKS Objectives: The ALEKS system will not allow access to objectives past the due date. Any topics you do not master within one objective will pour over into future ones, but you cannot make up the missed objective points. However, you can recapture some of the points in the catch-up objectives and through pie progress points.

Packets and Worksheets: Worksheet packet and extra credit worksheet scans uploaded to Canvas past the due date and time will receive late credit:

Up to 24 hours late – 1 point or 3% off, whichever is greater (any time past the due date and time is late)

Additional 3% off for each additional calendar day late

Exams 1, 2, and 3: Everyone may make up or retake Exam 1, 2 or 3 (choose one) at one of the makeup sessions at the end of the semester (see p. 11 of syllabus)

If for any reason you miss Exam 1, 2 or 3, you must take it as your one makeup at the makeup session or your score will be zero.

If you take all exams as scheduled, you may retake one exam of your choice (optional). I will count the higher of the two scores (original score and makeup score).

If you know in advance that you will be absent on the day of an exam, you may arrange to take the exam before the scheduled date and time if you contact me at least a week in advance of the test date. Or you may wait for a makeup session.

Final Exam: No make-ups or retakes.

In-Class Warm-ups, Activities and Quizzes: No makeups or retakes. I will drop your lowest 3 warm-up scores, lowest 2 activity scores and lowest 1 quiz score.

FULLERTON COLLEGE MATHEMATICS DIVISION SELECTED COLLEGE POLICIES

ACADEMIC HONESTY POLICY Students are expected to abide by ethical standards in preparing and presenting material which demonstrates their level of knowledge and which is used to determine grades. you may choose one exam to retake to try for a higher score (optional). Formula sheet plus one page notes (one side) allowed for makeup exam. Makeups are for Exam 1, 2 or 3 only – no makeups or retakes on the final exam.
