iteration sixF is a watch design I began as a project freshman year (it was really bad). Every year since, I’ve redone this project every time I’ve redone my portfolio.

This is the watch’s sixth and final iteration. I fully resolved it to be conceptually strong, aesthetically developed and simple for manufacturing

Inspiration came from street wear and brutalism. Exposed hardware and functional elements are deliberately placed. Engineered details are stripped down. Colors and materials embrace their natural state, and there’s a lot of black.

THE LOOK

I first landed on the aesthetic of a watch case captured by a brace. This would create an engaging interaction when you change the battery. I then took it further - so that interaction happens daily. The automatic watch only has an hour hand. At night it stops. In the morning, you remove the case and rotate it to the correct time.

INTERACTION

Using CAD to refine the details and explore mechanisms. I ideated on how the watch would assemble, how the small parts would interact, and how the construction related to the outside form.

DETAILS &CONSTRUCTION

foraging: task as ritualIn a Summer 2016 studio, I studied foraging to improve the experience. Our assignment was to choose a task we don’t typically do and to make it part of our lives. I went out foraging and made food from what I found. Our goal was not to create tools that make foraging easier, but to create tools that make foraging better.

I made foraging part of my life. A couple times every week I would go foraging. I learned to cook and ate wild foods. I also found several people whose life and job are based in foraging and talked to them to learn more

IMMERSION

I got a cow hide from a meat processor that sources cows from local farms. I went through a two month process of cleaning, curing, dehairing, fleshing and tanning. It may be the strangest thing I’ve ever done. I left out most of the more graphic photos, but I’d be happy to show them if you’re interested.

LEATHER

I found a discarded sign in a dumpster. Rather than letting it go to waste, I removed the decal and sandblasted it. By the time I was done, you could hardly tell it came from a twenty year old sign.

ALUMINUM

A friend told me about a good clay deposit in the Little Miami River. With advice from a local potter who uses local clay, I seived and dried the clay into a usable material.

CLAY

I gathered some nice dry firewood from a tree that was cut down about a year ago. I sorted through and found a couple logs with no cracks or splits. Once the bark was stripped off and the logs were sawed down, I had a couple good turning blanks.

WOOD

The second half of the build process - turning the raw materials I found into tools. I created a shovel, trowel and journal. This was done by more traditional methods.

I did a survey of fifty parents, each having been to a movie in the past 2 months. I presented them with research results and asked them questions based on that. Of all results I got, the most important thing was knowing that cleanliness is worth a lot of money.

I researched time lines for an average day for movie theaters, airplanes, and hotel rooms. The result was similar for every place, there isn’t much time to clean during the day. The other thing I noticed is that most of the day is spend with the lights off and the door locked. That was an opportunity space I looked to take advantage of.

The biggest opportunity is after hours.

Swiffer currently identifies as universal, kinetic and reliable (unfortunately I can’t share their current image boards). In envisioning a future version of Swiffer, I defined it as lightweight, kinetic and effortlessly powerful. Since my product is not hand-held nor moved through pushing, I explored different ways of appearing lightweight and kinetic.

I made quick Rhino models to explore aesthetics and their relation to function. Each model was ranked based on four criteria, based on my research about UV light, and my discussions with parents: recognizability, unobtrusiveness, ability to reflect and powerful appearance.

Because power increases exponentially with proximity, in a space with high ceiling the light could program to lower to be several feet above the ground when the door is locked. When the door is unlocked, the lights would reel back up into the ceiling

PROXIMITY IS POWER

The switch to turn the light on and off is attached to the door and acts as a lock. It serves as a notification to people coming in that the room is cleaned with Swiffer Ultra, and also acts as a physical block to make sure the light isn’t accidentally activated. Turning it on is easy to remember because it integrates into the daily locking up routine.

3D printing as a mediumWhile interning at CW&T, I conducted experiments in 3D printing.

I treated 3D printer as a programmable extruder, rather than a machine to create solids. The goal was to use 3D printing as a medium itself, not a tool to imitate injection molded plastic.

Beetle Blocks is a visual programming environment developed at MIT Media Lab. The program uses code to con-trol a “beetle” that extrudes its path as a tube. Users can explore the path as g-code to create a 3D print.

VISUAL PROGRAMMING

The first series of tests explored form. I twisted intersecting shapes, along with altering layer height and other parameters. It created spirals with intricate profiles, structures with loose construction, and forms with internal depth.

DEPTH & FORM

The next step was texture studies. Most were exploring a variety of ways to create cylinders, by varying layer height, paths to create a circle and different materials.
