1999 - 2003 Director of Quality Initiatives Health Care Corporation of St. John’s (HCCSJ) St. John’s, NLResponsible for the ongoing quality plan of the organization, which included a focus on Risk Management, Utilization Management, Infection Control and Quality Improvement. I linked with all programs and departments to develop and implement processes to address ongoing quality improvement. Some of my accomplishments included:

implementation of Risk Management processes to improve patient safety, including ~ monitoring of patient occurrences ~ management of critical occurrences ~ establishment of a Medication Safety Committee ~ development of a patient safety plan ~ refinement of a Product Alert process ~ establishment of a Patient Relations Officer role to manage

patient/customer feedback ~ implementation of effective infection control processes ~ identification and management of risk issues ~ education forums for managers and staff regarding risk management implementation of processes to improve quality of patient care, including ~ development of a quality planning document for the organization ~ review and revision of processes for quality reporting within the HCCSJ ~ development and monitoring of appropriate corporate quality and

outcome indicators, using a balanced scorecard framework ~ coordination of the CCHSA accreditation process ~ implementation of a process to support the development of administrative policies ~ education of managers and staff regarding quality improvement and indicator development ~ provision of support to programs in ongoing process improvement and quality reporting

1996-1999 Professional Practice Coordinator Health Care Corporation of St. John’sResponsible for the development and implementation of an interdisciplinary professional practice model, with specific responsibilities for the nursing components. Established structures to enable a shared governance approach for nursing, and was responsible to implement an appropriate committee structure to support these initiatives. I led a number of initiatives during that time, including:

development and implementation of a plan to consolidate the computerized patient information systems at eight hospitals, as these institutions were merged into one board as a result of hospital restructuring; development of a corporate system to track professional practice issues for all professional groups within the Health Care Corporation of St. John’s; development of a corporate nursing practice manual; and identification of quality indicators for the nursing professional practice group.

1995 - 1996 Director of Nursing, Medical-Surgical Areas General Hospital, Health Care Corporation of St. John’s

Accountable for the provision of leadership to coordinate and facilitate the management of eight medical surgical units within the General Hospital. These units include the following services: General Medical Oncology General Surgery Nephrology Orthopaedics Neurology/Neurosurgery Dialysis Urology Cardiology/Cardiovascular Surgery Endocrinology Responsibilities included planning and directing effective patient care programs within these areas. This includes the preparation of annual operating budgets, as well as ongoing fiscal monitoring. I was also responsible for Human Resource Planning and Development, and was actively involved in labour relations issues, specifically in relation to closure of beds and reallocation of services. Worked closely with other disciplines to facilitate effective interdepartmental and interdisciplinary communications. Accomplishments in this area include: implementation of a care mapping project coordination of an interdisciplinary committee to develop a plan to implement a home infusion program ongoing development of a corporate policy regarding Advance Health Care Directives

consolidation of technical support for Dialysis equipment within the city of St. John’s development of a proposal for the implementation of Advanced Nursing Practice roles, Le. First Assist in Cardiovascular Surgery.

1990 - 1995 Coordinator, Nursing Q. . & Patient Education General Hospital, St. John’s, NLA member of the Nursing Executive Committee, with specific responsibilities for the Quality Assurance Program for the Department of Nursing, which included a risk management component. As a member of Nursing Executive, responsible for development of the goals and objectives for the Department of Nursing within the General Hospital, at both the Health Sciences and Dr. L.A. Miller Center sites. Specific accomplishment included:

redevelopment of Nursing audits to reflect outcome development of interdisciplinary goals and objectives development of interdisciplinary audits implementation of a Shared Governance model within the Department of Nursing, which included the elimination of after hours supervision implementation of a hospital wide Occurrence Reporting system implementation of a computerized nursing care planning system redevelopment of nursing documentation systems development of a hospital wide patient education policy During my tenure, the position evolved from one of coordinator to facilitator, in keeping with the shift from Quality Assurance to Quality Improvement. My responsibilities were extended beyond the Department of Nursing, and I was responsible for the development and implementation of the organization’s Quality Improvement Plan. This included the development of a reporting mechanism, as well as education for all staff

1984 - 1990 Instructor, Staff Development General Hospital, St. John’s, NLResponsibilities in Staff Development were initially related to general programs, and included such activities as orientation, coordination of various workshops, courses and seminars. I developed the initial Chemotherapy course for nurses, and was responsible for the education of Pharmacists in relation to safe handling of Chemotherapy. In 1986, I was appointed to the position of Coordinator, Emergency Medical Attendant Program.
