The Contemporary Image Collective (CIC) is located on the 3rd and 4th floor of a 1940s building in the heart of Downtown Cairo, in 22 Abdel Khalek Tharwat Street.

CIC is an independent non-profit art initiative founded in Cairo in 2004. CIC’s mission spans contemporary art and educational program-ming that responds to and develops artistic practice, engagement, and discourse. Since its founding, CIC has a special interest in the many roles of the photographic image at large.

CIC PhotoSchool presents its complete educational programme and facilities, now expanded to a completely renewed space on the 3rd floor of our building in Downtown Cairo.

CIC PhotoSchool’s mission is not only to provide technical training, but also to engage our students in broader ideas of artistic practice, career possibilities, and developing critical discourse on visual culture. We aim to do this through o"ering strategised photography curricula with artistic, theoretical, and career-based options, in the context of a vibrant community.

In addition to our library and video-library, the PhotoSchool features a studio space with professional lighting equipment, a new and larger darkroom, and is opening a brand new digital lab for printing and scanning. Check out the website for more details on our facilities.

CIC PhotoSchool o"ers single courses as well as the General Introduc-tory to Photography Curriculum.

The General Curriculum is conceived to help you gain confidence with your camera, and discover your vision. It constitutes a serious and personalized learning path that hones your practice, covering all bases of digital SLR photography and preparing you for the steps you want to take next.

The General Curriculum presents a flexible structure with a minimum of two foundational mandatory classes to be followed by an additional specialty course of your own choice.

Through this course, the novice gets acquainted with technical fundamentals and creative applications of digital photogra-phy. The classes cover the main topics of digital SLR photogra-phy. Understanding your camera and the equipment, exposure, shutter speed and aperture, automatic and manual control, light sources, flash, depth of field, principles of composition and the basic techniques of editing using Photoshop. Through regular assignments and feedback sessions, participants get hands-on experience in applying skills and techniques. The course includes two field trips with the instructor.

This course aims to apply and expand the skills learned in your introductory photography class, to prepare you for the creative, conceptual and technical demands of the steps you want to take next. Through projects, students learn to handle challeng-ing shooting contexts and gain confidence in their vision. At the same time, the course empha-sises photography as a “medium of expression”. It develops your personal methods to communi-cate concepts, information, and emotions. This includes research-ing and experiencing various genres and styles of photogra-phy. The last part of the course is dedicated to developing your personal portfolio to progress forward in your photographic practice.

INTRODUCTION TO DARKROOM TECHNIQUES

No one has a full perspective on photography without gaining a fundamental knowledge of darkroom practice! This course is designed to provide you with that knowledge. It explores analogue photography and covers all aspects of black and white darkroom techniques from film processing to printing, enlarging and toning. Through the course, participants become acquainted with the functions and purposes of darkroom equipment and experience all its procedures.

The courses will be held as a private series of 5 lessons with the instructor, for a minimum of 2 students each series. Instructor and participants arrange the schedule together.

Applications for these skills: artistic, archival, personal and heritage projects.

LIGHTING

The course covers all steps needed to work within a professional studio environment. The first part of the class introduces light sources, correct exposure when using multiple sources, use of in-camera light meter, and di"erent types of light colors. The bulk of the course focuses on studio light. In-camera flash, ring flash, profes-sional light heads, use of honey-combs, soft-box, di"erent kinds of reflectors, umbrellas, macro-photography techniques, and the use of filters. Participants get hands-on experience of all major techniques possible in a studio environment and also receive training on the basics of photography software like LightRoom.

Applications for these skills: all commercial applications, but a good knowledge of lighting is essential in all intermediate photography practice.

PORTRAITURE

Through intensive hands on teaching and personal projects, partici-pants gain a thorough understanding of what it is that defines portraiture. Working with flash, continuous, and natural light partici-pants explore the fundamentals of photographing another person. Both in the classroom and in their own time, they deepen their knowl-edge of how to photograph people for a variety of uses and in di"erent situations and environments. Participants are expected to work on a personal project from the very beginning of the course and present assignments for comment in class.

Applications for these skills: commercial, editorial, and personal projects.

ADOBE PHOTOSHOP

Course participants learn why Photoshop is still the key software that professional photographers use for commercial and artistic image production, and gain the skills needed for them to confidently use the main areas of this complex piece of software on their own photos. From importing, image adjustment and preparation for printing, through to retouching and compositing images, partici-pants learn through guided hands on teaching how to work smoothly and e!ciently with complex tools and procedures. By the end of the course they can work to a good standard in the major components of Photoshop.

Applications for these skills: Photoshop is a key skill in almost any photographic practice.

THE WRONG IMAGE - CREATIVE PHOTOGRAPHY

This creative course is designed to exercise your observing skills, overcome them and work on a creative photography project to be showcased at CIC PhotoSchool. It pushes further all limitation one might have and stresses that “watching” can be more important in photography than “clicking” and that, potentially, no image is wrong. Participants learn how to identify the “normal” and generally “considered-to-be good” image and go beyond it to discover di"erent interesting shooting possibilities. During the first part of the course, participants review their body of work with a critical eye and then work on their personal creative projects.

Applications for these skills: artistic and personal projects.

NARRATIVE PHOTOGRAPHY

Narrative photography allows the photographer to follow a topic of their interest, until they can bring sustained insight and illuminating perspectives on important issues through their images. From the outset of this class, participants are encouraged to focus on one original topic, research it and gain access and trust with their subjects. During the course, they produce a visual narrative and explore ideas that could develop into a longer term project to be integrated into a portfolio. The course is based on group discussions and analyses of di"erent story-building strategies, to then develop each participant’s voice as a photographer. The meetings focus on composition and aesthetic intentions, editing and sequencing. All participants are required to present their research idea on the first day of class.

Applications for these skills: editorial and artistic projects.

ARCHITECTURE AND INTERIOR SPACE PHOTOGRAPHY

Any place, portrayed from inside or outside, carries multiple mean-ings. Specific techniques can be deployed when shooting the premises of a building. This course focuses on artistic and technical aspects of interior space and architecture photography. Participants approach lighting and composition applied to this topic. Assign-ments are regularly given to help students try out new techniques and skills and develop their own photo-projects. All assignments are reviewed through critical analyses and feedback. The course includes field trips to experience shooting sessions with the instructor.

Applications for these skills: artistic, journalistic, architectural, interior design.

PHOTO-DOCUMENTARY AND PHOTOJOURNALISM A good documentary photographer can get to the heart of a place, moment, person and situation and tell a story with a sequence of photos. This course is aimed at putting interested participants on the beginning of this professional path. Participants learn how photojour-nalists establish contact with people, interpret situations with honesty and clarity and balance artistic needs with the requirements of news and editorial assignments. Lectures and class discussions provide an overview of documentary photography, as well as references while helping participants to develop a personal vision as photographers. Participants are encouraged to focus on their own documentary projects from the beginning of the course through assignments presented in each class.

Applications for these skills: news photojournalism, activism, editorial projects.

INSTRUCTORS

MYRIAM ABDEL AZIZ graduated from the International Center of Photography in New York and has worked on assignment for di"erent publications, among which The National, Newsweek, Time magazine, The Sunday Telegraph, Marie-Claire, La Republica delle Donne, and The British Journal of Photography. Her work was featured in solo and group exhibitions in Europe, the Middle East and the USA. She is based between New York and Cairo.

ALADIN ABDEL NABY, professional photogra-pher since 1981, joined Reuters News Agency in 1985. He covered major stories across the Middle East and Africa. His work has been published in international publications including Newsweek and Time Magazine. Abdel Naby is a World Press Photo Foundation certified photojournalism trainer.

KIM BADAWI graduated from the International Center of Photography in New York. His work has gained him the Arab Media & Society Award for Best Photographer of the Year in 2007. His photos appear in 25 UNDER

25: Up and Coming American Photographer Award (2008) and in his book The Taqwacores- a History of the American Muslim Punk (2009). Badawi taught at Atelie’ da Imagem in Rio de Janeiro, NuVu Studio School, MIT, Boston, and New York University.

OSAMA DAWOD received his masters from the San Francisco Art Institute in California was the recipi-ent of the Photography Department Fellowship. His work has been shown in several group exhibi-tions in Egypt and two solo shows at the Town-house Gallery in 2005 and Artellewa 2008. He teaches photography at the American University in Cairo.

STEVE DOUBLE, professional photographer since 1985, has specialised in celebrity portraits. Some of his pictures are held in the Permanent collection of the National Portrait Gallery in London. Among his many clients: Rolling Stone, The Guardian Weekend, The Observer maga-zine, Sony, Adobe, Microsoft, GQ, and the British Film Council. He has been teaching at Central St Martins College of Art and Design in London, Nottingham Trent University and Sta"ordshire University.

MAGDY ELADAWY has worked as a freelancer and collaborated with the Information and Decision Support Centre (IDSC) in Egypt -in charge of shoot-ing images of artifacts of di"erent Egyptian muse-ums. ElAdawy directed the professional services branch of Fuji film in Egypt and he is the chief of the Digitization and Photo-documentation Unit at the Egyptian Center of Documentation for Cultural and Natural Heritage of Bibliotheca Alexandrina.

MOHAMED ELMAYMONY, a Cairo-based photojournalist, has been actively working with black and white photography for the last 8 years. His main interest lies in reviving the role of film-based techniques in photography through his personal practice and educational venues. He has been working at CIC as Darkroom tutor and Darkroom techniques trainer for several years.

RANA ELNEMR, Cairo-based artist, her work addresses topics including spaces, urban fabric, class structures and social change. Before her artistic career she was a success-ful photojournalist.

ElNemr has exhibited worldwide, was awarded from the Canon Digital Creators Contest in Japan and from the Nile Salon Photographic Exhibition in Egypt. She received the Grand Prix of the Bamako Biennale in 2005, and she was nominated for the 'Paul Huf Young Photogra-pher of the Year Award' in 2007 and 2009.

XENIA NIKOLSKAYA profes-sional photographer since 1995, her photos have been exhibited in several solo shows and are held in prestigious collections (such as Sveriges Allmänna Konstfören-ing, UBS bank, Bibliotheca Alexan-drina Arts Centre). Her work has been commissioned by News-week, GEO, Cosmopolitan, ELLE, Hermitage State Museum. Nikols-kaya taught photography at the Russian Academy of Fine Arts and St. Petersburg State Univer-sity, at Rutgers University (New York) as visiting professor and at AUC.

THE WORKSHOPS

CIC PhotoSchool’s workshops address many di"erent practices and range from short, fun beginners’ sessions, to large-scale professional development projects developed hand in hand with leading partners. A place for experimentation and development, CIC workshops give you the chance to try out di"erent techniques, become familiar with creative concepts and open up new possibilities for developing your professional practice. CIC workshops are available for free or nominal fees, and often give priority to the PhotoSchool enlisted students. Depending on the project, workshops often require a basic applica-tion process.

Below are workshops o"ered regularly - see our newsletter and website for other ad-hoc and large scale opportunities, and calls for applications.

CYANOTYPE – ALTERNATIVE PROCESS WORKSHOPPictures can be produced and replicated also without using a camera. Cyanotype is one of the available processes to print images in an alternative way, using alternative mediums.

This technical workshop lasts 2 intensive days and all equipment is provided. Participants learn the process and its possible applications in a hands-on manner. Ideal for those who work with digital photog-raphy and want to experiment di"erent cross-over techniques.

CREATIVE WORKSHOPSA good photographer works not only with technical skills, but also with original thinking. One of the best ways to stimulate your creativ-ity is to directly experience the practices of contemporary artists who work with photography.

CIC PhotoSchool’s creative workshops are free classes, normally led by an established Egypt-based artist. Through assignments, discus-sions in a group environment and reviews, participants get a direct experience of key practices and concepts that artists work on today.

LIBRARY AND VIDEO-LIBRARY

Open 10 am-6 pm Sunday-Thursday

CIC maintains an open access library space with wireless internet, reading area and an expanding list of book titles and videos. The library focuses on exhibition catalogues, artist books, monographs, critical theory covering various mediums, with a particular focus on photography, and art videos.

Our library is conceived as an open, discursive space where anybody may engage with literature, multimedia and one another. Discus-sion, reading, and writing on art may occur on a strong level, provid-ing room for criticism and awareness of practices and theories through public talks and workshops.

The library is a quiet space, open for general use during CIC’s regular o!ce hours as well as exhibition timings. Feel free to stop by to peruse the materials, have a cup of tea and a quiet space to work.

FACILITIES

Access to professional equipment, quality printing materials and technical help, and di"erent techniques for producing your work, is especially scarce. The School o"ers a range of di"erent services and opportunities for nominal fees and with the full support of profes-sional tutors. DARKROOM

CIC maintains a publicly accessible black and white darkroom. It is fully equipped and available to professionals and amateurs alike for developing film and printing negatives. We can supply basic chemi-cals, photo paper and the help of a professional instructor if required.

LIGHTING EQUIPMENT

Our facilities include brand new lighting equipment available for professional photographers as well as skilled amateurs. The equip-ment features 3 Hensel Professional-Pro 500 W Flash Lights, di"erent kinds of stands, backdrop and all needed accessories.

CIC o"ers a comfortable lighting studio space, of 42 square metres, on the 3rd floor of our building, that can be used for indoor shootings, trying out di"erent light setting combinations and realising profes-sional standard projects.

DIGI-LAB

This year, CIC PhotoSchool o"ers an in-house digital lab, with large format printer, di"erent paper choices and scanner multiplies your opportunities for planning and producing your work. It allows you to conceive and realize your photographic project exactly the way you want it, guaranteeing full control over the printing process.

CIC o"ers high quality printing and scanning services at competitive prices. We o"er full professional assistance and one-day trainings to become confident with the equipment of our new in-house digital lab.
