2 WHY UPGRADE?
Cibecs is proud to announce the release of Cibecs version 5.0.
This release of Cibecs includes new features and improvements in the Cibecs Server, the Control Center and the User
Agent components.
2.1 WHAT'S NEW IN VERSIONS 5.0
The following exciting and notably new features and improvements are included in this release:
1. Deployment of Cibecs User Agents from the Control Center
User Agents can now be deployed directly from the Control Center without using a 3rd party deployment tool. This
ensures faster implementation turn-around times. 2. Improved upgrades support
Support has been added for upgrading User Agents without administrative computer privileges. This ensures that all
users can be upgraded to benefit from new improvements and features.
3. Access User Agent logs from the Control Center
Log files used during troubleshooting of unprotected users can now be access from the Control Center. This reduces the
resolution time.
4. Server pairing
User Agents are paired to a backup server. This allows agents to be automatically moved to a new backup server without
the need to clear the agent cache folder.
5. Protected with Warning on Backup Status
Users that are protected where the last backup had failed can now easily be identified and resolved before they become
unprotected.
6. Hide User Agent icon on desktop & system tray
7. Password protected uninstall
8. User Agent Heartbeat (IP, Last seen, Operating system)
9. Additional environment information for Backup and Restore events (Hostname, Operating System)
10. Custom ports for server

3 AN OVERVIEW OF THE EXPRESS UPGRADE PROCESS
The following approach is taken to quickly upgrade to version 5.0.
1. Download the latest Cibecs version 5.0 from the Cibecs website at http://downloads.cibecs.com/download.php?filepath=latest/cibecs.exe
2. Run the upgrade software for the Cibecs Server. 3. Run the upgrade software for the Control Center. 4. Check that your license is valid and check that all existing users are active. 5. Put methods in place to uninstall previous User Agents if previously installed to user context. 6. Deploy the User Agents to a group of pilot/test users. 7. Check that the Test Group User Agents are upgraded successfully. 8. Deploy to remaining users.

4 COMPATIBILITY
4.1 OPERATING SYSTEM
The Cibecs Server v5.0 requirements:
Microsoft Windows Server 2000.
Windows Server 2003 (32Bit & 64Bit).
For scalability reasons, Windows 2003 web server editions (32 & 64 Bit) are not recommended, due to the memory limitation of 2 GB.
Windows Server 2008 (32Bit & 64Bit).
Windows Server 2008 R2 (32Bit & 64Bit).
Windows Server 2012 (32Bit & 64Bit).
The User Agent v5.0 requirements with some considerations:
Microsoft Windows 95, 98, Me and 2000 are old technologies that are no longer supported by Microsoft and therefore, are not officially supported by Cibecs.
Microsoft Windows XP: (All 32bit editions), 64 bit editions are not currently officially supported.
Microsoft Windows Vista: (All 32Bit & 64Bit editions).
Microsoft Windows 7: (All 32Bit & 64Bit editions).
Microsoft Windows 8: (All 32Bit & 64Bit editions).
4.2 COMPONENT VERSION COMPATIBILITY TO CIBECS SERVER V5.0
The following compatibility applies:
Component Cibecs 2.5 Cibecs 3.0 Cibecs 4.0 Cibecs 4.1 Cibecs 4.5 Cibecs 4.6.2
Control Center
User Agent
Conversely, Cibecs 5.0 components are not compatible to previous Cibecs Servers
Although V3.0 User Agents are compatible to the V5.0 Cibecs Server, there is a constraint between the two versions that will cause a backup to fail. This is due to performance improvements in versions 4.x which do not have this constraint.
Constraint: If the slider, in the Impact setting under Performance options, is set below the second slider position (see the red block in the image below), it will prevent the processing of any backups as it is not supported in V3.0 User Agents
Correction: Always ensure that the slider in the Impact setting of a Backup policy is set to the second position and above (see the green block in the image above) until the User Agent is upgraded to V5.0.
Solution: Upgrade all User Agents to V4.0 or later. It is recommended that you upgrade to V5.0.

4.3 UPGRADE PATHS FOR INSTALLATION AND DATA LOCATIONS
The installation paths of previous versions of Cibecs are fully supported by the Cibecs version 5.0 upgrade:
Components Cibecs 2.5 Cibecs 3.0 Cibecs 4.0 Cibecs 4.1 Cibecs 4.5 Cibecs 4.6.2
Cibecs Server Contact Support
Control Center Contact Support
User Agent Contact Support
A direct upgrade path from Cibecs v2.5 and previous versions are not officially supported. If you wish to upgrade from any previous version, please contact Cibecs support for assistance.
Version 5.0 and later will install the User Agent in the machine context. Previous agents were by default installed in the logged on user context. Depending on the installation method used for installing previous User Agents, it may be required that the existing User Agent is uninstalled before deploying.

5 UPGRADE PROCESS
This Express upgrade guide will take you through a quick and easy step-by-step upgrade process. During the upgrade
process it will be good practice and pertinent to do a few checks to confirm that each step has been successfully
completed.
5.1 BEFORE YOU BEGIN
5.1.1 It is strongly advised that you perform a backup of your Cibecs Server.
5.1.2 Ensure that the backup of the Cibecs Server has been successfully performed prior to starting with the upgrade.
It is essential to stop the server service before performing the backup
5.1.3 Select one or two pilot/test backup users.
5.1.4 Ensure that you have downloaded the latest Cibecs version 5.0 and that you have requested and received your latest license(s).
5.1.5 Ensure that you have sufficient administrator permissions to back up the server and to perform the upgrade install/installation.
5.1.6 Inform all key role players involved in the upgrade process and all the necessary end users of the software upgrade to the Cibecs Backup solution.
5.2 UPGRADING THE CIBECS SERVER
5.2.1 Run the upgrade software on the Cibecs Server by launching the Cibecs.exe file that you have downloaded.
5.2.2 Select the Install option to open the Advanced Install window.
5.2.3 Click the Advanced Install button. Click the Install Cibecs Server button.
5.2.4 The new version of the Cibecs Server will be installed.
During the installation check that the installation location is the same location as your current Cibecs Server install path, such as “C:\Program Files\Cibecs Continuity\Continuity Server.”
5.2.5 Confirm that the Cibecs Server service has started.

5.3 UPGRADING THE CONTROL CENTER
5.3.1 On the same Advanced Install window.
5.3.2 Click the Install Control Center button.
5.3.3 The new version of the Control Center will be installed.
5.3.4 When the Control Center installation is complete, launch the Control Center.
5.3.5 Log in to the Cibecs Server.
5.3.6 Check that your license is valid and check that all existing users are active.

5.4 UPGRADING THE USER AGENT
The User Agent can be upgraded using one of the following methods.
5.4.1 On the Solution Pack window, select the Save Installation File button.
5.4.2 Save the Agent.msi file to your preferred location.
5.5 CREATE A TARGETED USER AGENT
You will normally use this method for upgrades and new deployments.
5.5.1 On the Tools menu in the Control Center, select the Create Agent Installation Package.
5.5.2 Select the new Agent package file and click the Create Package button.
5.6 DEPLOYMENT
5.6.1 You may also upgrade to V5.0 using the built-in Cibecs Deployment feature to deploy the Cibecs User Agent, or if you had used a software deployment tool, such as SCCM, then you may continue to use it for the upgrade.
Cibecs versions 5.0 and later will install the User Agent in the machine context. All previous agent versions were installed, by default, in the logged on user context. Depending on the installation method previously used for installing earlier User Agents, it may be required that the existing User Agent must be uninstalled before deploying.
5.6.2 If you had previously installed the User Agents manually or deployed to the user context then you will have to uninstall the existing User Agents before you can deploy the version 5.0 User Agents using Cibecs Deployment.
5.6.3 You may also make use of an uninstall script at user logon to remove the User Agent. Once you are satisfied that the User Agents have been uninstalled you may proceed with the deployment of the version 5.0 User Agents.
Please contact Cibecs support at [email protected] if you require any assistance with the uninstall scripts.

5.7 AGENT UPDATE FEATURE
5.7.1 If, however, you had previously installed Cibecs manually, then you may want to use the Agent update option in the Control Center.
5.7.2 On Tools menu in the Control Center, select the Agent Update option.
5.7.3 Click Browse, select the new Agent update file then click the Publish Update button.
When using the Agent updater it may be necessary to configure a firewall or web filter exception for certain anti-virus exceptions, such as web filter exceptions.
During an update, the client computer may indicate that the update installation has failed. This is an issue which is only relevant to version 4.x to version 5.x upgrades and not going forward. These issues are constraints to upgrading from user context to machine context which is the mandatory context going forward, therefore future upgrades will not have these constraints. If you look a little closer you will discover that it actually did install successfully. This is an expected response in this particular situation.
Also, note that duplicate icons may exist on the client desktop after using the update feature. This is an issue which is only relevant to version 4.x to version 5.x upgrades and not going forward. This is the recommended way to upgrade, but to prevent this situation arising you should take measures to uninstall all agents before deploying the version 5.0 agents.

5.8 TEST PHASE
The test phase should be carried out on the selected test users. If the tests are completed successfully, you may then continue the rollout to all remaining users. If you encounter any problematic issues, do not hesitate to contact Cibecs support at [email protected]
Testing from the User Agent
5.8.1 Install and upgrade your selected test user agents.
If you are using the updater method you can check for Agent updates on the start menu. Go to Start > Programs > Cibecs Continuity > User Agent > Check for updates
5.8.2 After the User Agent has been upgraded, carry out the following checks and tests for each test user and mark each test that you have successfully completed.
1. Confirm that the backup schedules are still valid for each test user. ☐
2. Run and complete a successful backup for each test user. ☐
3. Run and complete a successful restore for each test user. ☐
4. Check that the Backup and Restore events are displayed in the User Agent reports. ☐
Testing from the Control Center
5.8.3 Select the Backup Status tab.
5.8.4 Check the following data in the Backup Status tab and mark each when completed.
1. Check that the correct version is displayed for each user in the Agent version column. ☐
2. Check that the hostname of the user's PC is displayed in the Computer Name column. ☐ 3. Check that the Backup and Restore events of the recently performed events are
displayed in the User Event History. - Right-click on a user then select the View history menu option.
☐
When all the tests are successfully completed, continue with the deployment to all the remaining users.
